>- ' ^ -,»r‘-,s^ - -■ ■ October 7, 1938 HIGH LIFE WHIRLWINDS TACKLE ROANOKERS DOUG DICKERSON AND W. A. BURCH BACK IN GAME Tilt Will Be Held at Roanoke; Kickoff Is Scheduled for 3 o’clock. The Purple Whirlwind football eleven will again risk its undefeated, unscored-on record for this season when it travels to Ronake, Virginia, Saturday, to tackle the Roanoke Ma gicians. The game will be played in the afternoon, with the kickoff set for 3 o’clock. Although this is a non-conference game, its importance is none the less great, as the Roanoke Magicians are a tough lot and will furnish a final test of the Whirlwind strength before they meet their age-old rivals, Char lotte, here next week. Both Dickerson and Burtner, who were out of the game last week be cause of illness, will be back in the line-up, adding strength to the Pur ple and Gold team as it attempts to ribbonize the Roanokers. The line wil be boosted by the return of W. A. Burch to his end post. From all indications, Roanoke is the strongest opponent on the Whirlwinds’ schedule this season. Head Coach Jamieson and Line Coach Day are both of the opinion that if the purple squad defeats the Roanokers, it will stand an excellent chance of cap turing state titular honors. Bear, captain of the Roanoke team, and Minton, heavy tackle, are two linemen who will be a constant threat to the Greensboro line. Also, in the Magicians’ backfield, two boys who are going to be hard to hold are Lasch and Monjdham. The boys who will probably see most of the action for Greensboro are Hendrix and Burch, ends; Smith and Sawyer, tackles; Captain Ginsberg and Reddick, guards; George, center; Dickerson, quarterback; Wolfe and Dempsey, halfbacks; Trull, fullback. Hipp will undoiTbtedly do his share in the tackle position, aiternating with Sawyer. Crabtree will share the pivot position with George, and Charlie Cal houn, who has recovered from a slight injury received in the Durham game, may start at fullback. Locals to Play Charlotte At Stadium Next Friday A SQUAD IS READY This Game Always Considered Football’s Seasonal Classic. Greensboro High will engage Char lotte here next Friday in what is con sidered the seasonal football classic. In the past when these two teams have gotten together to push the pigskin, and each other, around the gridiron, en thusiasm always hits a new high in both schools concerned. On this occa sion the Whirlwinds will be out to re venge the 18 to 6 defeat handed them at Charlotte last year. Charlotte, again, has a strong team as is witnessed in the score of three pi’evious games plaj’ed against Barium Springs, Richmond, and Rock Hill, S. C. However, judging from the grid iron antics of the Purple and Golds so far, the Charlotte boys shouldn't expect too much. CROSS-COUNTRY TEAM STARTS HARD SEASON AValter Miller and Robert Royal are expected to lead the cross country team this year, due to their experience and good work in past semesters.
