GHS Football Outlook
Football is definitely one of the
most watched games of all sports.
It is also one of the things that the
majority of the students look
forward to. 1 mysrff cannot wait
until I have to wrap up in big
bulky sweaters and drink about
five cups of hot chocolate to try
and stay warm during the games.
The atmosphere is one of the best
things about the whole event.
Sometimes there is more action in
the stands than there is on the
field. Hopefully that will not
prove true this year, (unless we
get a very rambunctious
sophomore class that insists on
throwing everybody down the big
hill or unless the football team
turns out to be rotten.) I don’t
think the latter will happen.
Being the first sport to be
played in the new year, football
practice started a couple of weeks
before the summer ended. It’s a
lot of hard work. On Friday,
August 19, the four high school
football teams got together here
at Jamieson Stadium. Dudley

seems to have been a little more

these games was to give the

THE Ladies TAKE OVER
by Lisa McDowell
Women have been getting
more and more involved in
everything everyday. Minute by
minute more progress is being
made. It seems like just yesterday
that harsh ridicule and criticism
was the only result women got
when trying to gain use of their
rights as human beings. Though
some ridicule still flairs up now
and then, I truly believe that the
main battle has ceased.
Women have progressed more
in the last 25 years than many
companies. One of the most
important gains in the whole deal,
was that which brought women
into the world of sports. Tennis is
one of the most popular sports all
over the world, and many of those
who play it best are women.
If you put all this together-
women, tennis, best—you can
only get one thing...Grimsley’s
Girls’ Tennis Team. They may not
be the best yet but they’re good.
Practice started August 22.
Grimsley will participate in
matches with a non-conference
team. This is being done mainly
to give the girls some practice.
The Conference marches will
begin and continue through the
end of October. For those on the
team who play exceptionally well
will be able to go to the Sectionals
in November.
The team consists of girls.
Some of the players returning
from last year are:

that everyone will make it a point

Cross Country: Off to a Running start
While the football teams
command much attention on each
of their practice fields, with
reporters and interested parents
and others watching, taking
pictures and adoring, a silent
group of runners move away from
the campus each afternoon going
on a fiv.e or six or eight mile run,
and with this pained breathing
and aching legs, the Grimsley
cross country team prepares for
its debut in the 1977 season. For
this year at least, cross country
and later track will be
synomymous with the name of
Dan Morton who figures as the
top runner in the state of North
Carolina, finishing second in last
year’s state meet to senior Billy
Lynch, who this year will be
sporting the blue and white of
Duke University.
Coach Smith’s main job will not
be with Morton, but rather he will
be faced with finding a handful of
runners to make the team good.
One great runner does not a cross
country team make. His choices
will be headed by junior Paul
Bailey who had a mildly
successful sophomore year but
who shows definite promise.
Other returnees includes senior
Jay Bennett, who is primarily a
sprinter but who is a gutsy runner
and an excellent competitor.
Senior Mollie Berry will be trying
to become the first quality
distance woman runner in the
state which would add to her
prominence as being the state’s
top female miler. Any boy who is
afraid of being defeated by a girl
better not show up at a Grimsley
meet for Mollie will be there
waiting for a chance to beat him.
Others who will try to land a place
in Grimsley’s top five include
Hank Howard, Gary Baldwin,
Tommy Few, Weston Whitaker,
Mike Williams, Jim Austin and
75
two promising sophomores, Mike
Sink and Ed Cottingham.
Entering a new conference this
year provides Grimsley with a
chance to win the first conference
championship, and that will
depend on whether four or more
Whirlies can give Dan Morton the
support he needs.

by Lisa McDowell'**^^* I
Hello, I am your friendly
neighborhood benchwarmer. For
those of you who are not familiar
with my writings, 1 am constantly
cutting down athletes. I want you
to understand that it’s not
because I’m a mean person,
actually I don’t know why I do it.
Force of habit I guess. Whatever
makes me do it, I want you to
know that it’s entirely satirical.
So, please do not get upset and
try to beat me up when your
favorite athlete has his name in
my column. After all, when
you’re in the newspaper business
you can’t be too picky about who
you pick on. There are deadlines
to be met.
Since I am new at this type of
writing it may cause some
difficulties. Don’t you worry
though, if I can’t think of enough
bad things to write I will surely
consult my colleagues for some
good information. Yes, I have
scouts!\)ne of them recently saw
an unidentified football player
wearing a pink tutu and dancing
around the goal post with the
head coach. UH, OH, I’d better
not start that so early in the year.
You know I’m not trying to get
anyone mad or embarrassed.
That’s the last thing 1 would want
to do. Any 240 pound quarterback
deserves more respect than that.
O.K., I’ll compromise, maybe the
tutu WAS blue.
This article has always leaned a
bit harder on the boys around
here. Well that’s not really fair
because we have some pretty
weird females running around
this place too. So, to even things
up a little, I’ll tell you about what
I saw at cheerleading practice.
My eyes seemed to have deceived
me but I could svvear that I saw
Kelley Haines shinny up the flag
pole in front of the main building
about ten times. Now, that’s
talent! As for the talents of our
other great women athletes, well,
somebody told me that Ann
James can jump around the entire
traci while holding one foot in her
mouth. These are just a few
examples of the great abilities
which are hidden beneath the
eyes of Grimsley’s own super-
stars.
Throughout the coming year I
hope to be bringing you the best
coverage of such unusual events
and more. Personality interviews
are among my best, depending on
which side of the fence you’re on.
Well, anyway, welcome to
Grimsley and I hope everyone has|
a great year.
