Page 4 HIGH UFE Itanday, May 25, 1978 Cole Porter Group Goes To Rumania by Carole Dolin The non-stop ringing of phones, a sardine-like packed house of people, long distance calls, clothes smothering the bed room floor, never-ending flowers and gifts being delivered to the house, and total chaos! This was the scene at Carol Skolnik’s house, 8:00 P.M. and May 3 as she got ready to leave for Ro mania with three other Grimsley students. These Grimsley students, John Cary, Chuck Kind, Wendy Klet- ter, and Carol Skolnik are travel ing to Romania from May 4-24 with twelve other cast members of the Cole Porter Review. They will be traveling on this peace promotion program as Friendship Ambassadors. Tea Honors 1978 Seniors by Carole Dolin On May 3,1978 the Senior class members were honored with the annual Senior Tea given by the Grimsley faculty. This formal affair was held in the UNC-G Alumnae House from 5:00 P.M until 6:00 P.M. A receiving line of school officials was present to greet the students as they entered the warm atmo sphere created by the faculty. In addition to this. String Ensemble music was performed, and petit fours were served while the students socialized. According to Mrs. Warren, a Grimsley math teacher, the Sen ior Tea is a time for the faculty and students to meet on a social basis rather than on an educat ional one. This is an event each year in which the faculty show their appreciation toward the students. Grimsley is the only school who honors their students with this tradition. In describing this Grimsley tradition, Mrs. Warren aptly 'remarked, “It’s our way to show we love you!’’ During their stay in Romania, the Cole Porter cast will be performing nine full length shows, each lasting for an hour and a half. The rest of their stay will include endless touring ol this European country. This ex tensive traveling through the country will consist of visits to the vast farmland, the majestic Car pathian Alps, Transylvania, and the Black Sea Coast. In addition to this, they will be staying with a peasant family in one of the Romanian villages. The Cole Porter Review cast of sixteen people managed to raise over $7,000 within a mere three months. This money assisted the Greensboro Parks and Recreation Department in paying for the tour cost. Non-stop work was put in by each and every cast member during fundraisers such as selling lightbulbs and pineapples, at tending a marathon dauce, and washing cars. The most original of their fundraisers was “Singing Valen tines”. For Valentines Day, the cast members, each in pairs, went to certain houses, presented a heart-shaped box of candy to the receiver of this gift, told them who this Valentine gift was from, and sang them a love song from the Cole Porter Review. This seemed to be one of the more successful fundraisers in that it was televised on CBS news, and appeared to be a guaranteed way of bringing a flood of tears to each recipient of the Valentine gift. While on tour, these students will be representing the American people. This is classified as a peace promotion program in which “Music is the medium. . , Friendship is the message.”- Career Genter Opens In by Jackie Seism Greensboro’s Career Education Center (pictured above) is sche duled to open in August, 1978. If you are undecided, get in touch with us: ADMISSIONS OFFICE Wingate College, Wingate, NC 28174 phone: 704/233-4061 According to one of its numer ous pamphets, JA is “the nat ion’s oldest youth economic edu cation programs.” American high school students learn the prin ciples of the free enterprise system by organizing small bus inesses that manufacture real products. Some Greensboro JA companies manufacture lanterns, candle holders, birdfeeders, school plaques, pen sets and matchbox dispensers. There is even a bank and financing firm run entirely by youth. The other companies save their money at the bank, earn interest on it, and receive divi dends. Junior Achievement companies are sponsored by local business es. These businesses provide advisors to the junior companies. For those students who are really active in JA there is the Achievers Association. Pam Den nis, a Grimsley junior, is very active in this group. Most of the members are presidents of com panies, she states. The Greens boro Achievers Association is rated as one of the top 10 in the nation, Pam proudly proclaims. A group of achievers will travel to Bloomingdale, Indiana, in August to receive a plaque commenorat- ing the honor. Junior Achievers gain much from their experiences. They meet alot of people, including Oakland Raider defensive line man David Rowe who was the guest speaker at the banquet. They also eat good.
