ATLANTIC BANK AND TRUST CO. Greensboro High School has put out a grand football team, basket ball team, and is working to put out a good tennis team. With these we are going to try to put out a team that will help us in a different way —a debating team. To do this we have to get a good foundation. Before we can do this we have to learn how to do it. The faculty of our school have suggested a very good start. That is the Literary So cieties, and they hope that all the students will co-operate with them. They have taken into consideration that we have no society halls and that we cannot stay after school. Their plan is to devote one hour every other Friday to a literary society, taking the chapel period of thirty minutes and cutting off the six and seventh periods fifteen minutes short, making the society period from 1:15 to 2:15. The sixth pe riod 2:15-2 :45, seventh period 2:45-3 :15. All of the society meetings are interest ing if the pupils are interested in this wmrk. Society work will help all pupils to stand before their fellowmen or classmates and express themselves clearly and fully. The work will also develop ability to pre side over a public meeting, and develop leadership among students. Besides this we are to get ei;edit in English for the work done in society. There are three hundred and twenty girls and one hundred and sixty-three boys in the main building. Of course three hundred and twenty members would be a large body, but it will give those who preside and those on the program excellent training. The boys’ society of one hun- ch-ed and sixty-three would not be un wieldy. Hence there will be organized a girls’ and a boys’ literary society. There will be times when both societies will meet in chapel, both societies partici pating equally in the program. The pro grams will consist of a dual debate, decla mations, readings, humorous selections, current events and musical numbers. Those who take part in those programs will receive systematic training or coaching from teachers at regular chapel periods one day of each week. Mr. York, Mr. Ed wards, Miss Minish and Miss Wilson have consented to do the coaching. Southern Life and Trust Company Greensboro, North Carolina FOOTBALL DINNER SATURDAY After the game Saturday the local squad was host to the Winston squad at a dinner given in honor of the visitors at the Hen- nessee Cafe. Manager Boone had a table attractively decorated and filled with enough of the best and most palatable food to satisfy the appetites of fifty-four hun gry football players. The two squads were seated and at the signal a charge was made upon the contents of the dishes. Some big holes were opened and the defence—which consisted of roast beef, potatoe salad, Bos ton baked beaus, English peas, slaugh, baked apple, hot rolls and butter went down in “de feet” under the aggressive, fast eating football teams. In addition to the two squads the male members of the faculty of both schools were represented and Dr. Myers, of the First Presbyterian church of this city, was present. After the dinner the two squads ex changed greetings and adjourned to the High School building, where they were given a reception. The Reception. The halls and the auditorium of the school were very prettily decorated in the colors of the two rival teams—purple and gold for G, H. S. and black and gold for Winston H. S. Progressive conversation was the main feature of the evening. Those not taking part in this gathered around the piano while several of the girls played some of the most popular songs. Refreshments were served and the Win ston boys, leaving about ten o’clock, thank ed their hosts and hostesses with deep ap preciation of their kindness. ‘DO YOUR BIT.’ The year 1920 and ’21 will find Greens boro High School with two good literary societies. Preperations are now in prog ress for three societies. The value of a literary society is now being recognized by all. The main ob ject is not work, as some put it, but it is work combined with pleasure. It is for the purpose of helping us to exprras our selves fully, and clearly, in public meet ings ; make us leaders among the students. Our plan for the societies is some what as follows: Wg will devote one hour every Friday to our literary work. This will be during the chapel period and fifteen min utes from each day of the two periods af ter dinner. The sixth period will begin at 1:15 last until 1:45—The seventh begin at 1:45 until 2 ;15, and society from 2 ;15 un til 3 ;15. There are 230 girls and 163 boys in the main building. All the more reason why our societies should be a great success. No one, or no few will be imposed upon, for we are all going to help, so “Do Your Bit. ’ ’ TEN ROOMS PASS PERFECT INSPECTION In the inspection of rooms held last week, the following passed a perfect in spection, fulfilling all the requirements of neatness: Room 208, room 205, room 201, room 207, room 203, room 1, annex B; room 5, annex B ; room 6, annex B ; room 1, annex A; room 3, annex A.
