LRIJJ'jL-i-. ILHMJUUIMJlFmillWWIWHi m PAGE SIX “HIGH” LIEB, EEBRUARY 25, 1921. DELIGHTFUL RECEPTION GIVEN ASHEVILLE SQUAD, Jolly, Good Spirited Time Enjoyed by Basket Ball Boys. The Greensboro High School basket ball team were delighted to liave as their guests the Ashevill basket ball team on Saturday evening, Peb. 12th. After a very fast and interesting game betw'een the two well matched teams, which was played at the Y. M. C. A. and in which Greensboro was lucky enough to carry away tlie honors, both teams and their girl friends were invited to a nine-tthirty feast at tlie lovely Y. W. C. A. Hut. Everything waited in readiness to re ceive this attractive and enthusiastic crowd. Promptly at nine-thirty they ar rived, as they liad played, full of pep, and ready to show tlie Asheville team they were delighted to have them liere. Miss Wilson, in her usual gracious man ner, met them at the door, immediately tagging each fellow with a cu]nd, and each girl with a heart. The numbers on these were to, serve as guides to the proper places to be chosen around the attractively decorated tables. The tables with the letters G. H. S. and A. H, 8. carefully arranged in hearts, also Valentines and candles, around which were gathered fifty of Greensboro’s and Asheville’s young people, w^ere indeed a lovely sight which St, Valentine himself would have been proud to see. Before taking their seats the whole erow'd sang the “Howdy Song,” w'hieh has been on the lips of most of the people in Greensboro for two weeks. After shak ing hands with the one next to them, tlie one they liked best, and the one they didn’t like, which afforded much merriment, the group was seated to partake of a delicious salad course and hot chocolate. No sooner seated than the fun began. Hoyt Boone, acting as toastmaster, called on several to express themselves, which (hey did in a very clever way. Especially good was the speech by the captain of the Asheville team (Flowers), who declared they had never been treated better in any city, also that the game play ed was the cleanest, best played and hard est fought he had ever played in. He thank ed Greensboro for her good spirit, and ex pressed a desire to return. Greensboro’s captain, Jimmie Poole, an swered this, assuring the Asheville team that on a return trip they might expect the same treatment, even to the score. Each member of both teams had a word, many of which were very clever, witty and snappj'. As fellows will do, “call o nthe girls,” of course on this Valentine occasion their opinions W'ere desired. They, as usual, had much to say, and said it. Nellie Irvin, captain of the girls’ basket ball team, made a splendid speech, which proved to all present she could not only play ball but speak as well. As no basket ball game is complete with out a word from the coacher, so even at a late suiipcr a word from them is appre ciated. Mr. York spoke of the spirit the Ashe ville team displayed and the splendid sportsmanship exhibited, telling them in his own words what has been so well ex pressed by another, “When the Great Scorer comes to write against your name. He writes, not w'hether you won or lost, but how you played the game.” The Asheville principal, Mr. Hutchin son, stated how glad lie was to.be with the team on their trip to Greensboro and com mended the boys for the good spirit shown. After singing several songs full- of school pep, we extended to the Asheville Manager Hayes and his tearh -an invita tion to come back soon, promising, them- we will “treat them good,” feed them well and beat them fair. May the boys of Greensboro High School have many more such entertainments for their visiting teams and girl friends. GREENSBORO FIVE WINS FROM BURLINGTON BOYS Score Was 31 to 21—Burlington Is Elimi nated From the Championship Series—Fine Game. Greensboro eliminated Burlington from the State High School basket ball cham pionship last night at Guilford College, wnen the locals by fast and clever passing and the ability to find the basket won the first game of the elmination series, 31 to HI. Burlington put up a game fight, but at all times there appeared to be only one possible outcome to the game. Poole and Daniel for Greensboro led in scoring and Koenig did some splendid ..guarding. Jones and W^el'ster -were the outstanding players for Burlington. By winning this game, Greensboro is en titled to play Lexington Friday night. The game will be played at Guilford college on account of a ruling of the Chapel Hill authorities that whenever desiralble the game be played on neutral territory. iThe line-up: Greensboro, Poole, If.; Britton, rf.; Daniel, e.; Ballard, rg. ■ Koe nig, Ig. Burlington, Webster, If.; Jones, rf.; Nicholson, c.; Gibbs, rg.; Schoff'ner, Ig. Substitutes, Stafford for Britton; Transou for Ballard. Referee, Stuart. PRELIMINARIES HELD FOR TRIANGULAR DEBATE (Continued from page 1.) the state debating championship now. Winston won the cup three years ago and covets the honor again. So the debate bids fair to be a hard fought contest. The team is an unusually good one and we feel con fident that it will put up a typical G. H. S. fight. G. S. S. CONTINUES VICTORIOUS MARCH; TEN STRAIGHT GAMES (Continued from page 1.) The first half began wfith Trinity scor ing the first goal. But G. H. S. began its old fight and at the end of the half the score stood 10-10. The second half was a fight from start to finish, with the score being tied and broken almost consecutively. But good, hard, con sistent fighting and better ability to shoot gave G. H. S. a margin of tw'o points. The wmrk of Poole and Britton and Bal lard on their goals from the field was a feature for G. H. S., Koenig and Daniel also showing their same old fight. For Trinity Park, Stokesberry, S. Roane and R. Roane featured. Line-up. Poole L. F Stokesberry Britton R. F R. Roane Daniel C S.
