LAMBETH IS MADE COACH The Greensboro High track prospects have been brightened somewhat with the discovery of new material. The re turn of only four letter men, of whom none were distance and weight men, was expected to handicap the team. How ever, Jack Norman, one of the letter men, has discovered that he can throw a discus around a hundred and twenty feet, which is considered good in high school circles. Abernnethy is showing much improvement from last year in the high jump. Bradley is showing up well in the middle distances, while Gregory, Martin and Douglas look good in the mile. Captain “Red” Goodwin, of course, is showing his old time form in the dashes. He and Jack Brown are get ting good distance with the javelin. Due to the fact that Coach Belding is coaching spring football, Mark Lam beth of Central Junior High has been appointed coach. He coached the team which won the state championship in 1927. The inter-squad meet was not held as scheduled, but time trials were taken instead. Saturday the team is going to Davidson to compete in the annual in vitation meet. Over thirty high schools have been invited. This is usually con- sidereds on the best feats of the sea son. In the time trials Goodwin and Gunter turned in good times in 100 and 220. Nicholson and Kenneriey, a new man, looked good in 'the hurdles. Bradley and Knight ran a slow quarter, but Bob Martin ran the half in 2:18. Gregory won the mile in five minutes flat, which is faster than the time which won at Davidson last year. Abernethy was off form in the high jump and went only five feet, two inches. Sockwell went five feet, one. The weight men and vaulters worked on form. BE WORTHWHILE GIRLS STAGE HIKE TONIGHT Miss Lena Strawbridge and Miss Mary Paris to Accompany Them to - “Sleepy Hollow.” The hike will soon be here, ^ So pack up your kit, And give a hearty big cheer. The Be Worthwhile Girl Reserves will leave the Y. W. C. A. this afternoon for their jaunt to Sleepy Hollow, where they ■will spend the night under the chaperonage of Miss Lena Strawbridge, the director, and Miss Mary Paris, the adviser of the Be Worthwhile club. The girls will carry their own supper and blankets. They will return to Greens boro early Saturday morning. They have long been planning an overnight hike, but, as it 'happens, each time something has prevented their go ing. The first time they planned one, a number of girls couldn’t, thus they had to postpone it. The second time, they really were going, but on Friday, the set date, it just poured rain, and they couldn’t go. Sport Sparkles With the addition of golf and swim ming, we will have five sports at school this spring. This mean that every boy in high school will be able to enter something. The course at Charlotte must have been hard for our golfers. Their score were way above their average game. They will meet them again tomorrow at the Country Club. Let’s ail go out and watch the matches. Remember to be careful not to talk or annoy any of the players while he is in the act of making a shot. Winston-Salem ^Yill open the local swimmers’ schedule here next Friday. The meet will be at the Y. - M. C. A.^, pool, and the boys will need all the sup port given them. What about John Gunter beating “Red” Goodwin, our captain, in the 100 and 220 Saturday? Their event at Da vidson will be watched with interest. Abernethy in the high jump and Norman in the discus throw, are show ing hidden talent. Luck to them at Davidson. Where did Charles Shaffer get the nickname “Ott” and “Red” Whitt, “Goldenrod.” “Bpnny” Wlmbish, who was a mem ber of the swimming team some years back, is assisting Mr. Routh in the coaching of the swimming team. An unusual number of boys are out for tennis this spring. With the ma terial Mr. Routh should turn out a good team. The stadium courts will be available April 1. The thud of the pigskin and slap of leather is being heard again. Heavy equipment has been Issued and scrim mages have begun. Spring football should develop some dandy material for next year’s squad. By the way, it is probable that night football will be played here next fall. Also a game has been scheduled vj^’ith Spartanburg, S. C., and it is liable that Kingston, Pa., will be added to the schedule. Mark T. I/ambeth is now coaching track while Mr. Beldliig is handling spring football, tloach Lambeth coached the 1927 state championship team. The intra-mural baseball games that Cpach Coltrane is sponsoring is a great idea. It gives every boy out a chance to play and may discover some good material. Jack Brown and Julius Ilorney will assist Miss Brinkley with girls* track this spring. They will have charge of field events. Do you suppose that girls can play golf? We*!l have plenty of fun watch ing them try, anyway. CAPTAIN BELL PUSHES PEANUT ON QUEER BET Last Friday afternoon. Captain Hiram Bell of. the high school 'wrestlers, en tertained a number of students with a very creditable performance of “goober” pushing. This little act was the result of a bet that was made last fall be tween Bell, captain of the wrestlers, and John Moore, captain of the boxers. The conditions of the bet were: that'the in dividual who made' the. least number of points in official competition for the en tire boxing and wrestling season, should push a peanut( with his nose) down the front walk of the high school. Unfortunately for Captain Bell, he lost to Captain Moore by a slight mar gin. Immediately aftgr chapel Friday afternoon, the loser kindly condescend ed to fulfill his end of the bargain. Much to the merriment of the onlookers, the innocent little goober was shoved on down the walk. G. H. S. Last Frylay, March 14, at the Char lotte Country Club, the Greensboro High golf team lost its initial meet with the Charlotte High team by the score of 16 to 4. The scoring was based on who won the first nine, second nine and the total eighteen. Between two players it was possible for three points to be won or lost. Due to an unfamiliar course, hard and very fast greens, the Greensboro golfers were handicapped very much, Newnham, No. 1 man of G. H. S. dropped his three points to Laxton. Michaels, No. 2 man, played an excel lent game despite the new course. He shot an 82, for the low score of G. H. S., and he also won one point from Mc- Canless. Carver, No. 3 of G. H.
