Three Mew Courses
In D. 0, Program
“New courses are being taugbt in
the vocational department wliich en
able boys to have a definite trade at
the completion of their high school
course,” stated G. L. Sandvig, director
of vocational education in Senior high,
in an interview September 4.
The new courses, trade drafting, air
craft sheet metal and ' machine shop
work, are in line with government reg
ulations, and in many cases will fit
students for jobs paying $50 a week, or
more,” he continued.
Mr. Sandvig went on. “The general
outline of the classes can be summar
ized as follow's:
Trade drafting—students are fitted
to be drjiftsmen; during the first six
weeks general drafting is taught, after
flint they specialize in either arclii-
tecfural drawing, aeronautical drawing
or engineering drawing.
Aircraft sheetmetal work—boys are
to construct actual models of planes in
class.
Machine shop—boys are taught to
use lathe, milling machine and other
machines.
"Tlie students, in all, have three
hours in class each day, and receive
three credits a year for the work,” he
concluded.
Twelve Year Pregram
Optioiial for Seniors
•Xorth (Carolina has always been one
of the few states ort'ering an eleven
year program in its schooLs—the first
seven grades compri.siiig the elementary
school and grades eight to eleven the
high school.
True, several of the larger cities
have provided a twelve year program
for several .vears, but recognition by the
state ill the form of financial supjiort
did not occur until the geaieral assem
bly of lt)41 iiassed an act providing for
a study of the situation in 11)41-42 and
for inauguration of a twelve year jiro-
grain on a voluntary basis with the
scliool year 1042-42.
Is Not (’ompuisor.v for Seniors
This year marks the introduction of
the program, which is not compulsory
for high school seniors. Students en-
Tering the eighth grade this year will
have four more years of high school
instruction after the completion of this
years work, and high school seniors
may, if courses are available, return
for an additional year after they com
plete the evelen year program.
The twelve year y'l'ogram offers spe
cial training to students for war work
as well as training for prospective col
lege students.
