Before the Whirlies could realize it. the Green Wave had a touchdown and the score was (> to 0. After Louis Allen had blocked a Gastonia punt with Balph Anthony recovering on the Green Wave 41, Bill McCormick picked up a first down on the 20 to give the Whirlies a real chance to score. Carl Bhibbs carried the mail to the 18, followed by a four- yard gain by Bob McFarland, and then slashed off right tackle to the Gaston one-yarl stripe. At this point the third period ended. On the next play Phibbs again took the ball and drove over for the Whirlies’ first score. The attempted conversion was low. After the kickoff Gastonia was forced to punt when three trys had failed to net a first down, and Phibbs returned the ball to the visitors’ 44. It will be the third time during the 1942 sea son that these teams ha\'e met in competition. October 16 was the date of the first meeting of the Mlnrlies and the Green WaA'e. Even then, experts pointed to that game as one to watch because the probable contenders for the West ern conference croAA'n were contestants. The locals were trailing for about a quarter and a half at Gastonia, but they came back to CA'en the score and liold the Gastons to a seven-all tie. After finishing in a deadlock for the title at the end of the regular playing season, the two teams decided on a playoff to decide who would meet Wil- son for the state crown. This game saAv Gastonia take a six-point lead in the first half and really started some of the Greensboro fans to worrying, but it was a different story in the sec ond half. The Whirlies came rushing back, tied the score and forged ahead, 13-6, then with only two minptes and five seconds left to play, Greensboro bad a bad break and fumbled on its oAvn 20-yard stripe. Gastonia ran the Greensboro distraction during the next couple of plays and soon made a touch down. Q’he conversion Avas good, and the score stood at 13-all. When the two aggregations meet again next Saturday at Charlotte, the aces of both teams will be in full at tire and ra’ring to go to make it the best game that their team has played this year. Co-Captain Bob McFarland, brilliant Whirlie Aviiigback, along Avith Ralph Anthony, Carl Phibbs, Bill McCormick and Darrell East, should be in tip-top condition for the encounter, and if they perform as they did in the Wil son game on ThanksgiA’ing, Greensboro should come through victorious. The Gate City’s forward wall, which stopped the Wilson backs time and again, is noAv in the best condition of the season, and it AA'ill be in there fighting to' stop tlie Green Wave as it attempts to roll on to victory. Gastonia’s Carl Shepherd Avill prob ably be the biggest threat to the Wirlie cause, as he bothered the local team a great deal during the last game for the tying tally. All told, it AA'ill be about the best game that has been played betAveen lAvo high school teams in North Caro lina this season, and a large crowd AA’ill probably be present to witness the fight for the state cx’own.
