The boys from Old North State had an easy day against the weaker but game boys from South Carolina. Talking of tall boys, you should take a peek at the giants over in the gym, Coach Jameison is all smiles when his starting five take the floor. Opponents gape at the size of the Whirlies. This year’s squad is one of the tallest ever to represent the Whirlies on the bas ketball court. Say, do you reckon that we have a Sam Ranzino on our team. From his brilliant play during the last two games it looks as if Bill Camp bell will be the Big Threat to op ponents this year. Bill was moved to the forward slot this year and has already given the Whirlies a Scoring Punch. The Veterans ot Foreign Wars are giving a dinner in honor of the 1950 Whirlies who finished the season with a 6-6 record. The guest speaker will be none other that “Peahead” Walker, head football coach of the “Deacon Demons” who were the surprise package of the Southern Conference and the Big Four. The football Superlatives for 1950 have been selected and the following boys will be honored at the dinner Thursday Night. The outstanding lineman is Bill Beck. “Tiny” Burtner was chosen as the outstanding back, while Archie Morris was selected as the best-all- around sport. At total of 42 boys will be the Guests of Honor at the dinner. Officials representing Greensboro will be Coach R. B. Jamieson, backfield Coach Charles Baker, Head Line Coach Robert Glenn and End Coaches Julian Smith and James Rawlins. Say, if you can swim without water wings, why not go out for the Swimming Team? No stuff, the Whirlie Tanksters are really a good outfit. John Irvin is the top letter- man returning to Coach Garland Murray. Others expected to return are Dick Campbell, Royce Garrett, Jere Woltz, and Gene Douglas. A lot of boys that didn’t go out for basketball can be found at nights playing in the Recreation League. “Digger” Enochs, Bill Lu- per, “Skip” Montgomery, and Ken Callender are playing for various teams in the league. “Leo” Le Gwin and John Smith took a trip to Washington over the weekend to see V.P.I. get trampled by Maryland. From all reports they had a swell time and they even got to talk with both of the coaches after the game. A rumor we just heard was that Archie Morris is taking Voice Les sons. This we would love to hear. Oh well, it’s an easy way to make money, a lot easier than raising Chickens, huh, Archie? Well, if no one will listen to you, you can still sing to your Chickens. The Monogram Club is busy rais ing money for a new Scoreboard, which will be placed in the Gym in the near future. The plans for the Student-Faculty game are coming along rapidly and the Teachers consenting to play are, Coach Jam ieson, Jimmy Rawlins, Julian Smith, “Jabbo” Johnson, and Mr. Taylor. Head Coach for the faculty is Grandpa Baker. The Student line-up is not complete but several have been picked. Sonny Hale, “Tiny” Burtner, Arnold Leary, Archie Morris and Charlie Ken nedy are the lucky ones so far. The complete line-ups will be dis closed at a later date. I guess we picked the wrong team to be tops this year. Navy dumped the Army from the Ranks of the Unbeaten. This was the ma jor upset of the year. The final 14-2. Oklaoma took advantage of this upset and squeezed into first place. Greensboro’s cagers, with Bill Jarvis leading the way, stopped a last minute rally by Danville to win, 43-41, December 8. • Tljis was the Whirlie quintet’s third straight win. Jarvis, the hustling giant center, for the Whirlie five, after shaking off a jinx in early season games, hit the basket for 18 points. Camp bell, the top Whirlie scorer prior to this game, dropped in 13 points. Center Jarvis and forward Bill Bolton (Danville) waged a duel in the first part of the game, with each making 5 points in only two or three minutes. The two teams were evenly matched in the open ing part of the game. Campbell broke the tie by stealing the ball and driving to score, giving Greens boro the edge, 13-12. Greensboro kept this lead throughout the game, although Danville knotted the count 37-37 in the final period. The Whirlies were ahead at the half by the slim margin of 2 points, with the score 22-20 in their favor. Whirlies Move Ahead The final period was filled with excitement and action. After the score had been tied at 37-37, for ward Pete Hall ^of Greensboro dumped in a push shot from the foul circle; and Bill Campbell, an other Whirlie forward, dribbled the ’ ball half way down the court and laid in 2 points. Jarvis rebounded and scored another, the clincher of the game. Danville scored twice by set shots from Henderson and Wood. But the time element saved the Whir lies. The Jayvees seem to be com ing along fairly well. The sopho mores along with returning boys have provided much of the Jayvee- game’s excitement.
