i Page Four High Life March 7, ms Grapplers Grip UndeFeated Season The Sports Corner. BY LEDBETTER Loss of Stanton Hurts . . . Paul Stanton’s loss is sure being felt at the time of the writing of this column. The Whirlies have dropped two straight conference games—to High Point and Charlotte, in side of two weeks. The slender guards’ points have been sorely needed as Greensboro is in the throes of a point famine. The team makes points, but not at the right time in the games. The Charlotte game seemed to show how badly teams want to beat the Whirlies. In the third quarter of the Charlotte game, when Central was leading by 13 points, the Charlotte coach refused to substitute. He made it evident that he was trying to pore it on. The game almost backfired, though, for in the waning minutes of the game, when Charlotte kept taking foul shots outside, the Whirlies almost caught them. Next Year’s Crop . . . Lots of class AAA basketball coaches will be glad to see the Bateman-Hudson combine go the route of graduation. But their going, along with ball hawking Rodney Edwards and tall Diqfc Routh, does not dim the Whirlie hopes for next year. Paul Stanton (minus his appendix), Charlie Hester, Buster Jenkins, and Don Patterson will form the nuculeus for the ’53 edition of the Whirlies. Don Patterson is one of the few sophs ever to make the Senior varsity. The lanky forward has shinning prospects ahead of him, for when he develops the needed finese and “meaness,” he’ll be hard to stop. Referees, Hmmmmmm . . . Now let it be known that the following is not “sour grapes” but the refereeing this season could be greatly improved. All the officials try to call a good game, but somehow they seem to get lost in the rush and flub-the-dub. How many of you knew that Bill Whedbse will be a three letter man this year? He will. He was quarterback of the foot ball team. His substitute basketball playing for Paul Stanton will merit the basketball capital, and he is also a catcher on the baseball team. . . and Edwards scores for the Whirlies!” The combined efforts of the Whirlies were in vain however, as they took their second con ference defeat of the season, 49-43, from the Charlotte Wildcats. In the foreground, “Li’l Dynamite” Hudson is coming in to help. ^ COLA Best by taste-test GREENSBORO NEHI BOTTLING CO. Frank's Esso Service 227 N. Greene Street GREENSBORO, N. By downing the Hiek Point Black Bison for the second time this season, they have suc ceeded in having an unblemished record for the second year run ning. The Whirlies had a repeat of the first battle with High Point Feb. 28, as they barely eked out a victory by a score of 19-16, the score of the first match. The' vic tory may be added to the preced ing twelve for a total of thirteen victories without a single defeat, The Whirlies won one of the preliminaries as Byrd of High Point took advantage of a five-pound deficit on the part of Loren Neilson to win § decision. Eddie Yost turned in the only preliminary vic tory of the night, defeating Kale, 4-1, as Norman Canoy of Greens^ goro was decisioned by Wood. Thirteen seemed to be a lucky number for the Whirlies as High Point took the lead with five points as Smith of the Black Bison won a fall over Reynolds, 28 seconds of the second period. Meade, as in all past matches, turned in a victory for the Whirlie cause by decisioning McKee, 6-0. Neither team gained as Roy Elium and Woollen drew to add two points each for the two teams. Gray decisioned Tot Wagner, 9-4, to give High Point a five point lead over the Whirlwinds, but Pete Frye shaved the lead to only two points as he won a decision over Sink of the Black Bison. 5-2. Charlie Peele donated a three point lead to the Greensburghers by winning by a fall over Strother in 1:50 of the second period and Chuck Dodgett followed up his lead with a decision over Sives of High Point, by a close score of 2-1, to lengthen the lead to six points. The Bison grapplers were de termined, however, and came bouncing back to tie the match up again as Herndon of High Point handed Billy Michael his first de feat in two years by a one-point time advantage, and Gantt de cisioned Smith in his second varsity match by four points. Ledbetter decisioned Lucas of High Point to break the tie and Greensboro took the match to finish up a very successful season. Franklin Meade finished out his third and last season for the Wrest ling squad with an unblemished record for his entire three years. • Prompt • Efficient Courteous COLUMBIA LAUNDRY ...
