Page Six High Life March 28, l%2 GHS Female Basketeers End Successful Season Since the 1952 Girls’ Basket ball season is drawing to a close, we thought it would be only fit ting and proper to give a sum mary of the games played and also the high scorers of each game. The season really got off to a bang when our own Whirlie Wim- min played the D. O. Demons in a non-conference game. This game was perhaps the most exciting game of the year because every one was anxious to see the pros pects for 1952 and both teams were giving their best to win. The D. O. Demons lost to the Whirlie Wimmin by a score of 15-11, but next year they will seek their revenge. Harriet Vaughn was high scorer for Greensboro making a total of six points; Peggy Lamb was high scorer for the D. O. Demons making eight points. Greensboro chalked up their first conference win of the season by defeating Reynolds of Winston- Salem. The score was 20-16 and high scorers for Greensboro were Harriet Vaughn and Rose Edmon son. Chambers of Reynolds was high scorer for her team making eight points. On January 15, the Greensboro Girls again defeated Reynolds by a score of 45-29. Harriet Vaughn scored eighteen points for Greens boro and Rose Edmonson made eleven. Chambers, Davis, and Lu ther were high scorers for Rey nolds. Winston’s Gray High School went down next before the Greens boro five to the tune of 2-23. This game was thrill packed to the very last minute and had it not been for the fine performance of the guards, the game might have been tragic to Greensboro. Carolyn Walker, Shay Harris, Nancy Haith- cock, and Kenan Neece were out standing in the position of guards. Greensboro suffered their first defeat of the season to High Point by a score of 22-21. Lena McGhee, Rose Edmonson, Harriet Vaughn, Louise Owens, and Sylvia Winters put in stellar performances as forwards. Herlin of High Point was high scorer for her team as Birthday and Party Cakes PECK’S 210 S. Greene St. Phone 2-5400 well as for the game making fourteen points. Harriet Vaughn was high scorer for Greensboro making eight points. High Point again defeated Greensboro on February 17 by a score of 46-19. Lena McGhee was high scorer for Greensboro making ten points. Jessup of High Point was high scorer for her team making 22 points. With 34-23 the final score. Gray of Winston handed Greensboro their third defeat of the season. Ally and Long of Winston tied for scoring honors for their team while Harriet Vaughn was high scorer for Greensboro with a total of 16 points. Although these girls did not go undefeated this year, their school spirit remained mighty high and it is the desire of this writer that members of the student body will get out next year and support the Girls’ Basketball team. The team next year will have experi ence and will be ready to follow in the foot steps of their big sis ters. Miss Margie Gabriel, who has given so much of her time to coaching these wonderful gals, should stand up and take a bow. She has created a love of good sportsmanship, a sense of fair play, and a desire to do their best among members of the team. All of this contributes much to our education and it makes us feel good to know we have wonderfiil teachers such as ^he on our faculty. Two red corpuscles were in love. But they loved in vein. —Leaksville High News WHIRLIE WIMMIH By Lois Fond On Thursday, February 28. 1952, the Junior Varsity of Greens boro Senior High School’s girls’ basketball team defeated the Curry varsity by a score of 38-10 Sarah Roberts was high scorer for Greensboro completing twenty of the total thirty-eight. Greensboro was able to bucket six of their attempted, thirteen free throws; while Curry was able to complete only two of their at tempted eight. Although Curry was not i strong threat to the Greensboro title, the game was an important one because it closed the 1952 basketball season officially, and gave the members of the Junior Varsity their much needed ' perience. These same girls will move up to the varsity next year, and the opportunity to participate in these Junior Varsity games in sures strong starters for the 1953 basketball season. Jean W.
