Page Four High Life April 11,1S52 'i' i WHIRLWINDS TAKE OPENER OVER BISON .. The Sports Corner.. BY LEDBETTER When you hear the crack of a baseball bat, the thud of a catcher’s mit, and that Japanese language that girls never understand, you can be assured of spring’s closeness. If you see a player in agony because of a strawberry, don’t feel sorry for him. He probably said, “Gee whiz. Coach, if I wear those sliding pads I’ll simply roast; besides I’ve never been hurt before.” And oh how sore those pitchers’ arms and catcher’s legs are after the first few days. How remarkably fast baseball players get tans—or is it stain from the mask. Yes, baseball practice has begun here at the High School. If you haven’t been aware of it, look around and you will see some of these limping first aid patients or brown colored faces. Although the Whirlies are minus the entire first team of last year, many substitutes saw plenty of action. Jim Murphy and Franklin Davis were among the few who really got the feel of that bame ball, and who earned letters. Murphy and Davis should be great assets to the team, for in spite of their last years action they played during the summer in the Liberty league. The Whirlies’ games spelled champs for them in their con ference this previous year. But the locals lost two straight games to Gastonia in the play-offs. Greensboro doesn’t have a fire ball pitcher like Jack Thomas, lost to the Red Sox, but the team’s strength is well rounded from the plate to the fence. Bobby Showjety, Sonny Brannon, Bill Whedbee, FuUam Cashion, Jimmy Martinez, and Tommy Settlemyre are subs returning from last year filling ably the positions left open. Rodney Edwards, and Sammy Hudson, dabsters of the hard wood court, have come out for the first time since junior high school and seem to be proving them selves in their positions: first base and third base, respectively. Whirlie Golfers Win First Golf Match The Greensboro golf team won their first encounter Thursday af ternoon over the Burlington golf team by a score of 12V^ to Even though the Whirlies were visitors on the beautiful Ala mance Country Club course they played remarkable well. Chuck Dogget, just through with wrest ling, split with his opponent, Chapman, the score each. John Hughes beat his opponent by a score of 3 to 0, and in their team score won 2V^ to one-half. Branch Crawford in his match with West won by a one point margin, two to one. Tate Pickett was the victor of his encounter defeating Nicholson 2V^ to one- half. Pickett and Crawford lost in their team score by just one point, 2-1. Johnny Hughes had the medal score of the afternoon with a low of 81, Her hair in curlers, a faded robe fluttering behind her, the lady rushed out and hailed the garbage truck. “Yoo hoo! Market St. Whirlie Nefmen Take Season Opener Last Tuesday was a big and successful day for the athletes of Senior High, as the baseball, ten nis, and golf teams won out in their first encounters of the year. The tennis version of the Burlington Bulldogs fell before the onslaught of the Whirlies netters by a much-one-sided score of 8-1. Joe LeBauer had the honor of starting the season off for the boys from Greensboro as he downed Bob Hasty of the Bull dogs, 7-5 and 6-3. Pete Daye of Burlington avenged the Bulldog cause by coming back to score the only victory for Burlington of the day over Hank Turner, by scores of 6-2 and 6-2. In other singles, Stanton de feated Fonville, 6-3, 6-1; Ramsey downed Varvour, 6-1, 6-0; Sulli van defeated Belmolken, 6-3, 6-3; and Mann defeated Tonmaras 6-1, 6-4; to give the Whirlies a perfect day except for the one solitary win of Pete Daye of Burlington. In the doubles, LeBauer and Stanton of Greensboro downed Hasty and Dye of the Bulldogs, while the combo of Turner-Ram- sey defeated Fonville and To- maras with Garvin-Mann finishing out the day for the Whirlies with a win over Orr and Belken. Whirlie Basebailers' Schedule Is Listed The Whirlie batsmen have eleven games scheduled for their season, but Coach Julian Smith is trying to register some more. Eight games will be played in April and three in May, six at home and five away. Here is your schedule for the season. Davis Leads The Attack On the mound for the Greens boro team, Franklin Davis com mandeered the win as he whiffed ten of the Bison and gave up only one hit to the Bison batters. The Bison, led by the Whirlies who had tallied two in the top of the second, caught fire and took advantage of four walks and three errors on the part of the home team, and with the one hit by Ken Frye, took the lead, five to two. Tied In Top Of Seventh The Whirlies made up their de ficiency in the next four innings and went into the top of the seventh with a score of five-all. It was David up to lead off for the Whirlies, and he secured a hit. He was followed by Hudson who got a walk. Rodney Edwards was hit by a pitched ball on the part of the Bison hurler. Blizzard, and went to first to load the bases for the home team. Tidwell Singles For RBI High Point set up a defense against a sacrifice as Don Tidwell came to bat for the home team. Tidwell proved their play was in vain, however, as he put a hit down to the shortstop, who couldn’t get the throw away in time, and Davis won his own game, Murphy flied out and gave Hudson his chance, and Edwards tallied one more on a passed ball after Phillips went out on a grounder. Varner secured a walk from Blizzard. He tried to steal second, but he was put out, but kicked the ball out of the hands of the second baseman. Tidwell took ad vantage of the opportunity and came home for the final and ninth run. The Whirlies buckled down in the bottom of the seventh and held the Bison scoreless.
