.. The Sports Corner..
By DON WILLIAMSON
Ah, busy days! With baseball, track, tennis, football (spring
practice), and golf going in full swing, the coaches here at
Senior are fully occupied.
Coach Bob Jamieson, assisted by Coach Herman Smith, is ai
the helm of the football forces. Coach Jamieson is also head
of the golf team. Coach Lody Glenn is in charge of the “speed
merchants,” alias the track team. Coach Julian Smith is at the
head of the Whirlie nine in baseball. Our two Coach Smiths
also handle Phy. Ed. classes. Aside from coaching duties,
Coaches Herman Smith and Lody Glenn have history classes.
Some schedule, huh?
Former Whirlie dept: We would likfe to note the former
diamond greats here at Senior who are making a name for
themselves in organized baseball this season. Stan Johnson, Jr..
son of “Jabbo,” is pitching for Norfolk in the Virginia League.
Lindy Brown, Whirlie diamond ace of a couple years back,
is toiling for the Reidsville Luckies of the Carolina League.
Andy Frazier is playing some fine shortstop for the Durham
Bulls of the Carolina League, Jack Thomas, rookie sensation
last year, is now on the mound for the Hi-Toms of the North
State League. Of course we wouldn’t want to leave out Hal
“Skinny" Brown, who has become a Chicago White Sox
regular. We think it is safe to say that Senior High is well
represented in baseball circle sthis season.

Whirlies Lose Game
To Winston Players
The Senior High baseball team
was defeated by the Black Demons
of Reynolds High of Winston-
Salem in a Western Class AAA
contest played last Tuesday on the
Demons home field. The final score
was 9-5. This was a severe set
back of the hopes the Whirlies had
for winning the conference
championship.
The loss was the third suffered
by the Whirlies this season. Their
previous losses were at the hands
of Burlington and Salisbury. They
have wins over the Gastonia
Green Wave and the High Point
Black Bison.
Whirlie miscues afield, coupled
with timely hitting by Reynolds,
gave Winston an 8-1 lead after
three innings. This lead was
enough to give Reynolds the vic
tory, but the Whirlies made a

Spring Football Game
To Spot Blue-Whites
Coach Bob Jamieson has split
his Senior High football squad
into two teams' for the annua!
Navy-White Spring football game
Coaches for the two teams are
Herman Smith in charge of the
Navy team, while Lody Glenn will
be at the helm for the White
team.
Out of the two teams there are
only thirteen letter-men who have
had little, if any, experience.
The teams have been so divided
that the game should be both in
teresting as well as a close game.
As an added attraction the
Senior High band, plus all the
Junior high school bands will give
a concert at the game under the
direction of Herbert Hazelman.
