September 26, 1952 'WHIRLIE WIMMIN By Cordelia Goodnight This year’s Whiriettes show more promise than ever. With practice now getting under way, the teams are sporting new faces, both sophomores and out-of- towners. Some outstanding ones are: Pat Raye from Baldwin, New York; Pat is a senior and is inter ested in a nursing career. Al though her favorite sports are ten nis and badminton, she plays center forward in basketball. Joyce Edwards, a senior, from Baltimore, Maryland, has been doing quite a lot of swimming for Coach Jamieson this summer. She is also very good in softball and basketball. An outstanding sextet of sopho mores came to Senior from Prox imity Jr. High; including: Jean Gregory, who is interested in all sports but especially likes basketball and softball. Jean was voted most athletic last year at Proximity. Mildred Jones who played all sports at Proximity. Mildred’s favorit sports are basketball and softbalL Betty Sue Collins who played guard in basketball last year and plans to go out for third base in softball this year. Dot Walker who, like her sister Exie, an outstanding player last year, plays softball and basketball. Dot also is interested in swim ming. Lula Belle Hobbs who played guard in basketball last year for Proximity, would like to hold this position at Senior. Jan Noah who was a prominent figure in sports last year at Prox imity, specializes in basketball and softball, although she enjoys any sport. In addition to these new peo ple, quite a few outstariding girls returned from last year's team. Some of these are: Betty Ruth Austin, Jean Austin, Jean Bate man, Shirley Branson, Dorothy Briston, Peggy Capps, Sue Cars well, Jean Eddins, Rose Edmond son, Betty Lanning, Rhebe Moore, Linda Moss, Sylvia Ramseur and Sylvia Winters. With the able coaching of Miss Gabriel and the support of the student body, these girls have a chance of producing some of the best teams in the state. So, support your team! DUKE P^QWER COMPANY High Life Page Five Vital Statistics Listed On Novice Cheerleaders Our football team has had the enthusiastic support of the school this year and school spirit is burst ing out all over. At our first home game the student section was com pletely filled. The cheering section will be led this year by fourteen very able cheerleaders. The group is headed by senior Ann Carlson who is active in many other phases of school life. She is vice-president of the school and of the Youth Center Council, a Torchlight mem ber, member of the tennis team, and also a Mariner Scout. Those returning from last year are: Seniors, Susanne Chamblee, Kitty Holt, and Jackie Scott; Juniors, Nan Ayers, Betty Bell, and Ken neth Cates. On Monday after the game more than sixty people turned out for cheerleader try-outs. Only seven of these could be chosen, making it necessary for Miss Louise Smith and her committee through count less eliminations to chose only the best. Maybe you don't know some of these new ones, so let me intro duce them.
