'WHIRLIE WIMMIN
By Cordelia Goodnight
This year’s Whiriettes show
more promise than ever. With
practice now getting under way,
the teams are sporting new faces,
both sophomores and out-of-
towners. Some outstanding ones
are:
Pat Raye from Baldwin, New
York; Pat is a senior and is inter
ested in a nursing career. Al
though her favorite sports are ten
nis and badminton, she plays
center forward in basketball.
Joyce Edwards, a senior, from
Baltimore, Maryland, has been
doing quite a lot of swimming
for Coach Jamieson this summer.
She is also very good in softball
and basketball.
An outstanding sextet of sopho
mores came to Senior from Prox
imity Jr. High; including:
Jean Gregory, who is interested
in all sports but especially likes
basketball and softball. Jean was
voted most athletic last year at
Proximity.
Mildred Jones who played all
sports at Proximity. Mildred’s
favorit sports are basketball and
softbalL
Betty Sue Collins who played
guard in basketball last year and
plans to go out for third base in
softball this year.
Dot Walker who, like her sister
Exie, an outstanding player last
year, plays softball and basketball.
Dot also is interested in swim
ming.
Lula Belle Hobbs who played
guard in basketball last year for
Proximity, would like to hold this
position at Senior.
Jan Noah who was a prominent
figure in sports last year at Prox
imity, specializes in basketball and
softball, although she enjoys any
sport.
In addition to these new peo
ple, quite a few outstariding girls
returned from last year's team.
Some of these are: Betty Ruth
Austin, Jean Austin, Jean Bate
man, Shirley Branson, Dorothy
Briston, Peggy Capps, Sue Cars
well, Jean Eddins, Rose Edmond
son, Betty Lanning, Rhebe Moore,
Linda Moss, Sylvia Ramseur and
Sylvia Winters.
With the able coaching of Miss
Gabriel and the support of the
student body, these girls have a
chance of producing some of the
best teams in the state. So, support
your team!

On Novice Cheerleaders
Our football team has had the
enthusiastic support of the school
this year and school spirit is burst
ing out all over. At our first home
game the student section was com
pletely filled.
The cheering section will be led
this year by fourteen very able
cheerleaders. The group is headed
by senior Ann Carlson who is
active in many other phases of
school life. She is vice-president
of the school and of the Youth
Center Council, a Torchlight mem
ber, member of the tennis team,
and also a Mariner Scout. Those
returning from last year are:
Seniors, Susanne Chamblee, Kitty
Holt, and Jackie Scott; Juniors,
Nan Ayers, Betty Bell, and Ken
neth Cates.
On Monday after the game more
than sixty people turned out for
cheerleader try-outs. Only seven
of these could be chosen, making
it necessary for Miss Louise Smith
and her committee through count
less eliminations to chose only
the best.
