Page Eight High Life September 26, Tentative Programs Announced by Choir Under the able direction of Miss Eula Tuttle, the choir has begun to plan for the coming school year. First was the election of choir officers. The following members were chosen: Dickie Chalk, presi dent; Stanley Wilson, vice-presi dent; Barbara Prago, secretary; Larry Emerson, treasurer; Chris Velonis, librarian and Virginia Redread, accompanist. Although no definite dates have yet been set, the choir will make several guest appearances. Vocal entertainments for the Civic Clubs of Greensboro and for both Greensboro and Woman’s Colleges have been planned. These pro grams are popular with all choir members, the latter two especially so to the young gentlemen. During the first week in De cember the choir and orchestra will stage their annual variety I show which promises to be a real treat to all students. I After Christmas, with the assist ance of the band, the choir will present a concert combining the talents of both organizations. Music, both vocal and instrumen tal, will comprise the program. The choir will then begin to prepare itself in earnest for the year’s climax, the state contest held in High Point. The North Carolina Music Fes tival will be the final event. Torchlight Officers Chosen At Session The scene is set, the lights are dimmed. Suddenly there is a tap on your shoulder and you ex perience the greatest thrill of your high school career. You are being inducted into Torchlight National Honor Society. This group is made up of Senior’s very best students. The first requirement for induction is scholarship. You must have a 90 or better semester average for your Tiigh school career. In addi tion to this requirement, you must also meet three others: leader ship, character and service. The time to start working toward the goal of Torchlight is your very first day at high school. Last spring Torchlight “tapped” five Juniors into the organization. This group began its semi-monthly meetings Thursday morning, Sep tember 11. At this meeting they elected officers and began making plans for the main events of this year. They are: College Day, for which Torchlight members act as host and hostesses, the annual Torchlight Talent Show, and both fall and spring Torchlight tapping ceremonies. The group, which is composed of Ann Carlson, Joe Le Bauer, Joyce: Lee, Pat Gregg and Virginia Red head, elected the following officers: President, Joyce Lee; Vice Presi dent, Joe Le Bauer; and Secretary, Virginia Redhead. History of New Teachers Reveals Varied Talents (Continued Irortt Page One) also attended the Boston Museum School for four years. During World War II, he taught airplane mechanics in the Philippines and at various bases in the United States. He is interested in sports and has played football under Mr. Jamieson. At Carolina he won his letter in track and also was on the track team here at Senior High. The new typing teacher. Miss Rowena Montague, graduated frpm East Carolina College and is now working on her master’s degree. She makes her home in Oxford, North Carolina, a town in the eastern part of the state. Her special interests are travel and reading. Mrs. Mary Siler, formally of High Point, is teaching biology here at G.H.S. She graduated from Elon College and came to us from Jamestown High School. Her special interest is travel, and she has toured the United States and Canada. She is also interested in photography and develops her own pictures. Earey in Physical Education Last, but not least, is the tall, red-haired Mr. Patric Earey, the new physical education teacher who is helping the football team this year. Mr. Earey graduated from the University of' North Carolina, and this is his first year of teaching. His special nterests are sports and, reading. Billy Hlaft To Head Playmaslers Group At the initial meeting of the Playmasters on September 18, Billy Hiatt was named president of the dramatics organization. Other officers of the group repre senting the three classes of speech and dramatics are as follows: Ann Falk, vice-president; Margot Ham mond, secretary; and Nancy Cook, treasurer. Class chairmen of the three groups which are taught by Miss Causey are Margot Hammond, sec ond period: Sherold Klein, sixth period; and Billy Hiatt, seventh period.
