Page Four High Life October 10, ias2 Gastonia Tames Whirlies in Thriller, 12-0 .. The Sports Corner.. By MARSHALL and WILLIAMSON Well folks, here we are right in the middle of the football season, and trying our best to get this corner of the sports page going in high gear. The Whirlies, it seems, are having trouble getting started also. A few bad breaks got the Winds off on the wrong track, and they haven’t found the combina tion to get on the right one. In the Wilmington game our boys did everything except score. Fumbles inside the Wild cats’ 10 yard line stopped the two big threats the Whirlies had started. Our eleven outgained the Wildcats, but couldn’t manage to get over the double stripes. We find this situation continuing in the Rocky Mount game. The Whirlies fought hard and gave it everything they had, but still couldn’t score the always vital touchdown. Against Raleigh they failed to get their offense rolling until the last quarter, which was too late. The Charlotte line proved to be just too much for the Winds as they came up with their worst offensive showing of the season. Thus we find that with a couple of breaks, the Whirlies could have a 2-2 record instead of a disastrous 0-4. Our team, much overdue, has six games left this season. Out of the six, five are conference games. The Whirlies are by no means out of contention in the Western Class AAA championship fight and with nothing to lose and everything to gain, the other conference members had better watch out! New Coaches Two new coaches have been added to the football staff this year. They are Mr. Claude Manzi, who has been line coach at Burlington for the past two years; and Mr. Pat Earey, who graduated last year from the University of North Caro lina. This U. N. C. graduate is beginning his first year of teaching here at Senior High. Coach Manzi is assisting Mr. Lody Glenn with the line, while Coach Earey is teaching physical education and is handling the backfield. P.S. Have you bought your “Beat Winston” ribbons yet? However it wasn’t quite gpod enough, as they dropped a thrill- packed' 12-0 game to a heavily favored Gastonia team. The Whir lies, a three or four touchdown underdog, rushed the larger Gas tonia line off its feet most of the way and, except for two quick touchdowns in the first and last periods, the Whirlies would have earned a tie. Gastonia, who along with being undefeated is also unscored upon, had a hard time protecting this record against the Whirlies. The Whirlies had several opportunities to score but never could cross that double line. Gastonia’s first touchdown came after the Whirlies, deep in their own territory, had to kick out from behind their own goal to Chuck Hartman on the Greensboro 45. He returned it to the Whirlie 18 on a fine exhibition of running. After seven plays the boys from Gastonia finally scored with Rhyne going over from the three for the touchdown. The try for the extra point was blocked by Norman Canoy. The Whirlies then received the kick-off on their own 14 and drove straight down the field to the Gastonia 13 where they were inches short of a first down. Gastonia kicked and once again the Whirlies started a drive from the Gastonia 43 to the 29, where an interceped pass ended that threat. Gastonia’s Green Wave After this, the Green Wave of Gastonia started a drive of their own and drove to the Whirlie 23. However, a pass intercepted by Charlie Sneed stopped that. Sneed caught the ball on his 7 yard line ❖ ENNIS Beauty Salon Plaza Shopping Center and Summit Shopping Center Crowd Watches As Wildcats Drown Fourth Whirlie Attempt At Victory and ran it back to Gastonia’s 48 where Eddie Rayle was inter cepted by Gastonia’s Alfred Step. The half ended seconds later. After the second half kick-off Gastonia couldn’t gain and kicked out to the Whirlies 48, from where Yost, Davis, and Sneed drove to the Green Wave 5. On first down a handoff from Yost to Scott back fired as it was fumbled, and Jerry Hubbard recovered. Final Touchdown The final Green Wave touch down was set up when Dough White fumbled a punt and Gastonia re covered. After getting a first down on the 7, Gastonia had to wait ’till fourth down before they could score on a pass from Parker to Hartman. The try for the extra point was wide. After that the ball went from one end of the field to the other. Greensboro held on their own one foot line after Gastonia hit the line four plays from the 2 yard line. Mike McGinnis, the Green Wave star, found the going rough, and could break away only on one long run of 67 yards near the end of the game. This was the first time he hasn’t scored in a game and also, the first time the Green Wave hasn’t scored more than three touchdowns. Whirlie Stars For the Whirlies, it’s mighty hard to pick out individual stars. On defense, Gary Coble, Charlie Sneed, and Jimmy Davis came up with the majority of the tackles. On offense, Eddie Yost, Charlie Sneed, Jimmy Davis and the whole offensive line played a fine game. The team as a whole played great ball. Phone 30384 Senior High Whirlies suffered their fourth straight defeat at the hands of the Charlotte Central Wildcats by a score of 13-0 in a game played Friday night, Septem-; ber 26, in the High School stadium. A crowd of 2,500 saw Central score in the opening minutes and go on to take the contest which was the opening Western Class AAA Con ference game for both teams. Charlotte Wildcats racked up their first score in little more than a minute and a half. Quarterback Pete Burris faded back from his own 45 and threw a long pass to Ingram, who leaped between Whirlie defenders and raced to score from the 10 yard line. Nor man Canoy blocked the extra point try, but the Whirlies were off sides and Mattison made the next try good for a score of 7-0. With Mattison leading the way, the Wildcats scored the first time they received the ball in he sec ond half. Mattison made it first down on the 9, and Ingram took a wide pitch-out and raced into the end zone for his second touch down of the evening. The kick was no good and it was 13-0. The Whirlies couldn’t get their offense rolling against the rough Central line. They went into Charlotte territory only twice dur ing the night; once to the 42, again to the 44 yard line. The Whirlies had the ball for only nine plays during the second half. Wildcat fuUback, 205 pound Dickie Mattison, was in the Whir lies’ hair all during the game. Dur ing the second half touchdown drive he carried the ball nine out of fourteen plays. Ingram and Burris also led the Charlotte attack. Tommy Kirkman, the 150 pound Whirlie halfback, played his usual fine defensive game. Jim Murphy and Charlie Rayle also played well. Charlie Sneed led the Whirlie offense as he picked up 42 yards during the course of the night, Doug White, sophomore halfback, made a long run around end.
