Page Four High Life November 21, 19^2 The Sports Corner WILLIAMSON and MARSHALL Last week’s defeat at the hands of the Burlington Bulldogs brought an unsuccessful ending to what could be termed a successful season for the Whirlies. A few weeks ago we pre dicted the Whirlies would snap out of their losing ways when they were riding on the crest of a five game losing streak. They did with a win against the Maroons of Asheville. They followed this with a win over the Reidsville Lions who were previously unbeaten. They then made it three in a row by knocking over Winston-Salem, who was also unbeaten before they met the Whirlies. The Winds then met their third straight undefeated foe, the Salisbury Yellow Jackets. Salisbury hand ed the Whirlies their sixth setback of the season as the Whir lies came up with perhaps their poorest showing of the sea son. Then came the traditional game with High Point. Neither team was on the winning side of the fence, but the rivalry was still there. The Whirlies walked away with this one and their third conference win. Then came the Bulldogs . . . The outstanding factor of the Whirlie season this year has been their defense. They allowed only 113 points in the eleven games this season. That is an average of 10 per game. Only two teams won over the Winds by more than two touchdowns, Salisbury and Burlington. Raleigh, Charlotte, and Gastonia all won by only two. The other two were by 6-0 at the hands of Wilmington and Rocky Mount. The offense average, only 4.9 pts. per game, clearly shows why the Whirlies haven’t won more games this year. Co-Captain Norman Canoy and Center Bill Walke have been selected to play in the annual North Carolina-South Carolina Shrine Bowl game played in Charlotte. Canoy has led the line play for the Whirlies all year while Walke has played fine as offensive center. Raymond Pennington of Bessemer is the other Guilford County player invited. Art Scott Paces Win Over Bison Halfback Arthur Scott raced 47 yards for a fourth quarter touch down that paced the Senior High Whirlies to a 12-6 victory over their bitter rival, the High Point Black Bison, in the annual game played there November 7. A thoroughly chilled crowd of 3,000 witnessed the Western Class AAA conference contest, which was also the battle for the Guilford County championship. In the fourth quarter after a punt return to their own 12, the Whirlies ground out a first down on the 47, after Yow had gone 59 yards for an apparent touchdown, but the officials ruled his forward motion had stopped on the 48. A penalty set the Whirlies up to the Bison 47. Then Scott took a hand- off and without a hand touching him, scampered the distance for 12-0. A bad snap from center pre vented the try for extra point. High Point recovered a fumbled punt on the Greensboro 25 late in the last quarter to set up their lone score. The Bison bucked for a first on the 1, and two plays later Corn ell Johnson, a freshman fullback, bulled over from the 9. Fred Marshall blocked the kick and the final score was written, 12-6. Greensboro picked up victory number four for the season, includ ing three conference wins. For the Bison it was eighth loss of the season; they have tied Burlington. The Whirlies in the last six years have been able to defeat the Bull dogs only once, that in 1950. For the Whirlies it was their sev enth defeat to go with four wins. This was an improvement over the 1951 record when the Whirlies could win only three games. The Bulldogs have also had a hard time winning and with the win over Greensboro they finished the sea son with three wins, seven defeats, and one tie. The Whirlies wanted to finish their season with a win to end what would have been a successful comeback. The Whirlies have four teen boys that won’t be back next year. Co-captains Eddie Yost and Norman Canoy head this group, followed by David Kersey, Ray Lutz, Frank Cameron, Dallas Hol- lerman, Fred Marshall, Bill Walke, Lee Creede, Charlie Sneed, Jimmy Davis, Arthur Scott, Dan Haley and Jimmy Murphy. During the first period neither team could get started but at the start of the second quarter the Whirlies got going with Yost and Home Drug 1204 Grove St. Phone 0342 Yow doing the running. From th? 20 Yow went off the left side to the 11 where Scott carried to the 9, but Greensboro was offside. Two plays later Bill Hughes intercepted a pass on his own 13. Burlington was pushed back to the 6 by a holding penalty and from there Clayton ran 33 yards to the 39. The Bulldogs then raced against the clock and scored with 25 seo onds left in the half. Bob Roach converted. The Bulldogs took the second half kick off on the 20 and in seven plays had scored their second touchdown. Mullis carried the ball five times; scoring from the two. The Whirlies drove back from their own 30 to the Burlington 25. Yow carried to the 17, and then Yost lost 4 yards. Yow then fum bled and Clayton ended the scoring by running 78 yards for a touch down. Variety Shop 1205 Grove St. Phone 3-1728 Gray Seal PainI Co. 608 Ashe St. Phone 6359 Nat Silver 112 W.
