Traffic Squads Begin
To Assume Positions

Wins French Contest
Sara Toenes, senior, claimed top
place in the annual State High
School French Contest given last
May.
Her prize was a scholarship of
$150 which she will apply toward
tuition for Woman’s College.
Winners were announced in June
by officials of the University of
North Carolina’s Department of
Roman Language and the Exten
sion division sponsors of the com
petition.
Participants were French stu
dents from all over the state. Bar
bara Jessup, senior, was also £
vdnner and Phyllis Brooks, a grad
uate of 1955, received honorable
mention. A total of 38 high schools
from throughout North Carolina'^
entered 552 students in the con
test.
In the same vein of language
contests. Senior boasts also a top
winner in the 1955 State High
School Spanish Contest. Senior
Faye Fuquay was the second place
winner in the Spanish competition
sponsored by the University and
received a metal for her prize.
Senior’s thirty members of the
traffic squad have assumed their
permanent positions and are iden
tified on their posts this year by
blue and white arm bands.
Chief squad member Manley
Dodson, elected to the position last
spring, is responsible for this ad
dition to the appearance of the
thirty members of the organization.
Dodson is assisted by the two
runners-up for this school post,
Charles Pemberton and David Wib-
le. The three have stated they feel
the grounds and halls are well
patroled. Dodson has stressed the
policy of keeping everyone off
the grass between buildings and
has added squad members in sev-
eial places to enforce the rule.

or second year divisions.
Three students also had honor
able mention in the state Latin
Contest. They were John Gardiner,
Dick Robinson, and Eve Purdon,
