Page Pour HIGH LIFE SPORTS SECTION January 13, 1956 a School-Spirit Supports In Whirlie Win Over Charlotte Locals Upset'Cats In Conference Game Upsets occur, but an underdog Greensboro High quint came up with the most startling one as they put to the wayside a much- heralded Charlotte High squad by a score of 75-67, January 6. Losing three of their five start ers made Coach Bob Jamieson’s club a deep underdog. But after the initial tap-off, there was no sign of “class distinction.” The Whirlies,, led by sharpshooting guard Owen Johnson, gave the impression to onlookers that they were dusted with “stardust” pre vious to the game time. Knowing that they were the decided dark horse seemed of no importance as they kept the hosts busy on their toes for two entire halves. Johnson swished the nets for 21 markers, 11 of ’ those coming from hits at the charity line. Doug Albright, Whirlwind center, proved a strong spot on * the Greensboro team as he cashed in for 18 points, which combined with Johnson’s total, accounted for slightly more than half of the Greensboro scorii^. Team Effort For Win It was no single player who won the contest. Coach Jamieson’s charges, helped considerably by the two loaded buses of GHS sup porters, were in no mood to lose their AAA opening ball game. Wil son Carruthers, Paul Dyson, Doug Orr, Fred Hitchcock and Lin Oates all contributed gainfully to the Whirlie cause. Command Halftime Lead Going into the second quarter, the home ttam held a slim one-point lead 14-13. By halftime, the GHS visitors had mustered a 14-point advantage as they left the court for intermission with a 44-30 stronghold. The win left Jamieson’s dribb lers in a jubilant manner, as it afforded them a 1-0 record in the conference. It also boosted team morale and school spirit, leaving all heads pointing to wards the state championship crown!! I Greensboro’s swimmers, out to duplicate the fine records of their last two seasons, won their initial dual meet of the 1956 season against thie Myers Park High School on Saturday, January 8, at the Central YMCA. The Whirlies were victorious in all but one of the eight events included in the competition. They compiled a twenty-seven point margin in the 47-20 triumph. Bob Hubner provided the out standing performance of the after noon by establishing a new state record for a twenty yard pool in the 100 yard free-style event. His time was 57.4 seconds. It seems as if C^h “Lody” Glenn has found himself with a fieldhouse full of potential five- pointers. Farber states that “wrestling is a noted sport in which Lody teaches you to shake hands with a suy, then grab his neck and twist his hand so he can’t run while you break his neck. It is definitely rising bn a high school level, and it’s a sure bet to be one of the best body-building, physical and mental athletics around GHS.” The Whirlie Mat-men met in a contest with Asheboro here last night and secured a victory over the foreign hairy-chested he-men. The next battle will be with Statesville on January 17 here in the high school gsrm, and Coach Glenn invites all students to attend and support the Whirlie wrestlers. Whirlie Hellers Lose To Bulldogs, 68-56 Excluding Whirlie center Paul Dyson’s two-point effort, the Dur ham High cagers on January 3 masterfully out-performed the hc-me-standing squad by 68-56, with the score being knotted on several different occasions and ex tremely close on many others. The Whirlie dribblers held a one point advantage at halftime, 29-28. Unfortunately for Coach Jamie son’s club, the Bulls came through in the waning moments of the contest “all fired up” and with only minutes to go, poured through the baskets a winning margin. For Greensboro, three cagers carried the brunt of the scoring department. Forward Larry Gill swished the nets for 17 points, one of the best efforts of the young season. Wilson Carruthers, another forward, and rising center Paul Dyson also hit in the double fig ures. netting 12 and 11 markers, respectively. The player who literally “walk ed away with the ball game” was Durham’s flashy forward Paul Mc Neil, who led all scoring with 24 points. His shooting accuracy wrecked the Greensboro defenses, hitting nine field goals out of 16 shots and six one-pointers from the free throw line. The loss did not count against Whirlwind hopes of annexing a top spot in the AAA Western League, It was a non-conference battle, the last one for Jamieson’s struggling charges. SYKES REXALL DRUG CO.
