Page Four HIGH LIFE SPORTS SECTION October 5,1956 Whirlies To Tackle Asheville's Maroon Tonight Coach BOb Jamieson sends his Greensboro Senior High Whirlies against what should be one of their toughest opponents of the year, the Maroon Devils of Lee Edwards High in Asheville. Currently the Whirlies are perched atop the Western AAA standings with a 2-0 mark. They are seeking revenge for a 27-24 loss handed them last year by the boys from the mountains. A^ieville Idle Asheville did not play last week as their contest with Winston- Salem Reynolds High was post poned. While the Maroons were idle the Whirlies took it out on the Gastonia Green Wave by a tune of 27-0. Currie Singletary took over the quarterbacking duties last week- and was very impressive in his first real choice to show what he can do. End Larry Gill returned to the lineup last week at full speed and played a good defensive game as well as grabbing a few aerials. The line play of the Whir lies was excellent last week as they kept the Gastonia offense bottled up. Play Demons tfesA Next week the Whirlies come home for their annual contest with Winston-Salem. It should be a good game. After the Winston contest the Whirlies play host to Danville’s George Washington High School and then Salisbury, the defending state AAA champs. Frosh Play Tonight For football fans who can’t make the trip to Asheville tonight there will be an interesting con test in Senior High’s stadium. The freshman teams of Wake Forest and HNC meet at 8 a. m. It is being bilted as the first struggle between the two schools with teams that were brought in com pletely by coaches Paul Amen of Wake Forest and Jim Tatum of Carolina. Tickets are $1 and can be purchased from any Kiwanian. Larry Wachter, Whirlie quarterback, drives for yardage against Gastonia. The inset is of Currie Singletary who starred, in the 27-0 win last week. JV’s Win Two Contests; Sophomores Stand Out Singletary Stars In'Win; ^X^hirlies’ Defense Superb Red-headed Currie Singletary, the number two quarterback, led the Whirlies to their second con ference victory, defeating the Gastonia Green Wave 27-0. Singletary came off the bench early in the first quarter to re place Harold Wrenn at the helm of the Whirlies. Wrenn reinjured the ankle that he hurt in the Whirlies 19-0 win over Charlotte Central. Poor kicks by the Green Wave gave the Whirlies the ball in Gas tonia territory early in the con test. but the Wnirlies fumbled tlie ball back to Gastonia several times. After the second poor kick by Gastonia the Whirlies drove 33 yards for their first touchdown, The Whirlies were stopped on the four-yard line, but Coach Bob Jamieson sent in little Lofus Neese. Neese ran from the double-wing formation and scored standing up. The extra point was good to nmke it 7-0. With two wins under their belts as this edition goes -to press, the Jayvee football team has started on its way to another good season. The JV’s have downed Guilford 13-0 and clobbered Burlington 19-0. In both games the touch downs were scored on long runs. Stout and Kitzmiller both turned in long jaunts in the Guilford game for touchdowns and Morgan and Newlin ripped off long runs in the Burlin^n game. Sophomores comprise the larg est part of the club, as it is main- I ly a proving ground for the play- 1 ers. Depth is good, but there are no individual standouts. “If a boy is head and shoulders above the others, he will be put on the varsity,” states Coach Smith, instructor of the Jayvees. First stringers in the Burling ton game were Spaulding and Wal dron, ends; Ritchie and Strange, tackles; Price and Johnson guards; Haithcock, center; Swof- ford, quarterback;'^. Bailey and Barger, halfbacks; and Newlin fullback. Coach Smith says that the team as a whole plays well. He lists the following boys on the roster. Spaulding, Hinshaw, Caldwell, Hodgin, Waldron, Griffin, Lee, and Perkins, ends; Ritchie, Albert, Smith, Strange, and Bradham, tackles; Johnson, Penfield, Pem berton, Christie, Barton and Sharpe, guards; Haithcock, Evans, and Pox, centers; Swofford, Mor gan, Harraway, and Pope, quarter backs; Barber, B. Bailey, K. Bailey, Kennon, Stout, Crothers, Squires, Williams, Sudderth, Sheffield, and Harris, halfbacks; Newlin, Wach ter. Morton, Pugh, and Brame, fullbacks. Carolina, Duke, State Face Tough Foes out as planned last issue, we hope the favored teams will cooperate this time to help in our prediction record. For those who are partisan, we hope you will understand wf havl nothing against your team; we just predict the games. w n uimerscana we nave PENFIELD SNODDERLY NULL Gamecock crow over Tatum’s terrors! Whirlies Beat Ceniral Hold Freeman Nil While holding the talented Bob by Freeman to less than 20 yards rushing, the Whirlies struck ef fectively through the air and on the ^ound to defeat the Charlotte Central Wildcats 19-0 in the Sen ior High Stadium. The Whirlies ^ot the yardage when the^ needed it iii their first Western AAA Conference encoim- tr. A fourth down pass from Har old Wrenn to Bobby’ Brown from the Charlotte 35 set up the first down and the touchdown on the nine yard line. Brown ran around the end for five yards and then scored the first Whirlie touch down standing up. With old reliables Jim Geiger, Larry Rogers, Brown and Wrenn taking turns, the Whirlies put to gether a 47 yard drive for their second touchdown the first time they got possession of the pig skin in the second quarter. Wrenn climaxed it all on a one yard olunge for the TD. Buddy Riv^ kicked the extoa point. Defensive safety man Larry Wackter set up the final scoring of the night. Late in the first half Wachter intercepted on Charlotte’s 48 and ran to the 29. Larry Rogers ate up eight yards over tackle on the first play. Harold Wrenn toss> ed a perfect pass to end Larry Gill who caught it with a tremen dous effort on the last play of the half for the touchdown. Gastonia was soon forced to punt to the Whirlies. Roger Hobbs received the kick and handed off to Lofus Neese. Neese took off and sailed down the sideline to the Gastonia 27 yard line. It took the Whirlies six more plays to score with Bobby Brown doing the honors to make it 14-0 as the half ended. DefHise Great The Whirlies’ defensive forward wall was superb during the first half. They yielded only one first down, and Gastonia was not able to complete a forward pass. The Whirlie contingency in the stands was cheered by the fh^ play of the second half. On the kickoff the ball went to the six- yard line. There, aided by almost perfect blocking, Larry Rogers gathered it in and raced 94 yards for a touchdown that broke the ■back of Gastonia. That touchdown made it 20-0. The final Whirlie touchdown was made on a scintillating 79- 5ard gallop by quarterback Currie Singletary. He took the ball on-an option play over right tackle. He got through a tiny opening and then completely out-distanced the entire Gastonia team! Gastonia Threatens Gastonia threatened only once, that time being late in the third quarter. They penetrated as far as the Whirlie seven where they fumbled the ball back to Greens boro. In the last quarter, Whirlie re- ser^^es quarterbacked by Larry Wachter, controlled the ball most of the time and just missed scor ing by a hairbreadth. Barry Morgan Racks Up Two ID'S In JV’s Game Barry Morgan, a transfer from Sumner School, scored two touch downs on long runs as he guided the Senior High Jayvees to a 19-0 victory over the Burlington JV’s in a game played in Burlington September 20. Don Newlin, the fullback, raced 75 yards in the third quarter for the second touchdown, which made it 13-0. Morgan climaxed the scoring Volunteers will have play day Deacons by 6! Tigers have feast!
