Senior Boasts Magnificent Structure
In Modern New Homemaking Building
BY JUDY SHALLANT
Step through these portals and
enjoy a fascinating tour through
one of Senior’s newest, most mod
ern buildings on its campus guid
ed by “ye roving reporter.”
First let me set you straight
on its name. Home Ec Building
is strictly behind the times and
definitely out—the correct title is
Homemaking Building. At the ori
gin of home economics courses
years ago, the latter word_ was
just linked to the subject, but in
reality, the purpose of the course
is learning about making of a
home, thiereby substituting the
modern name Homemaking.
Recently completed and occu
pied for the past two months, the
Homemaking Building is planned
and constinicted with facilities and
space comparable to two, good-
sized homes.
No formal ^dedication has been
contemplated as yet, but Miss
Mary York, head of the Home
making Department, plans to in-
'Teenage Rebel' To Play
Engagement At Carolina
“Teenage Rebel,” which is con
sidered one of the most absorbing
family pictures to come out of
Hollywood in recent years, starts
Sunday at the CAROLINA THEA-
'IRE.
This drama, based on the
Broadway stage play “A Roomful
of Roses,” headlines Michael Ren
nie, Ginger Rogers, and three
stars of the future, Betty Lou
Keim, Warren Berlinger, and
Diane Jergens.
Betty Lou, already established
on Broadway and in movies and
television, plays the role she cre
ated on the stage—that of the
teenage daughter who has devel
oped an extreme dislike for her
mother.
The story is about a mother
who has lost her daughter in a
divorce settlement and of her ef
forts to regain the love of her
child.
Highlights of the picture in
clude rock ‘n’ roll dancing party
and an auto ‘drag’ race. Two
songs, “Cool It Baby” and “Dodie, ’
which are now on records, are
introduced in the picture. An ex
tra attraction for the women
viewers is Miss Rogers’ ‘American
Look’ wardrobe.—Ad.

one of the most unique of its
kind in North- Carolina.
Have you ever torn your skirt,
popped a button on your shirt, or
ripped an article of clothing that
just had to be mended? Well, on
your left, ladies and gentlemen,
is a service room where all this
will be possible, complete with
sewing machine, needles, threads,
and pins.
On the right of the spacious
entrance foyer with three bulletin
boards, displayed on a college
level, and two couches, we find
the Senior High Kindergarten.
From 8:30-12 a. m., 30 little four
and five-year-olds inhabit this
section under tne supervision and
direction of Mrs. Thomas J. Love.
Modeled after the WOxTian’s Col
lege nursery, il has the most up-
to-date equipment in the country.
Outside the main play room is a
small terrace with a wading pool
that is transformed into a sand
box during the colder weather.
Of noted importance is the observ
atory booth where students can
watch the children unnoticed
through a special type of glass
which can be seeh through on one
side but on the other is a mirror.
Child development and homemak
ing students have the opportunity
to observe and help in the kinder
garten.
If we proceed straight ahead
from the front door you'll find
yourself in a realistic living room
with floor to ceiling windows ad
joined by a gracious patio and
barbeque pit, since Southern liv
ing tends more to the outdoors.
Alongside the living-dining area,
made to accomodate, about 50
people, is a fully-equipped kitchen
complete with five kitchen units
of brown and yellow, and blue
and white color schemes, 57 tote
trays neatly stored in built-in
shelves for the girls’ sewing, and
a fitting room.
Main Feature
Main feature of the second
floor, besides a counseling room
and a teachei’s’ lounge, is the
family life room, built for large-
scale entertainment and family
living. Adjacent to this room is
a kitchen with three units, a work
room, and a balcony. As family
life is mainly a creative course,
this versatile area with modem
trapezoidal tables and posture
chair can be used for all the num
erous class activities, including
dramatizations, buzz groups, vis
ual aids, debates, skits, discus
sions, field trips, panels, and guest
speakers. Added attractions of this
space, which is planned to hold
100-150 people, are a fireplace,
folding doors, a walk-in closet,
and built-in bookcases.
Mrs. Lucille Hillman, family
life instructor, claims, “The con
struction of the room lends itself
to !he dram? of the class.” The
entire buildii^ of modern archi
tecture is designed for the courses
taught there, not the courses made
to fit the facilities.
