La Alianza Espanola
Hears Tony Martinez
Alianza Espanola members
conducted their November meet
ing at the home of Anne Stone,
junior, Tuesday night, November
20.
Tony Martinez, junior, head
lined the program. He spoke of
dating customs in Cuba, his na
tive country. Tony told the group
that Spanish teen-agers never
date alone; their parents go along
also. He jokingly said that the
telephone is their only hope of
privacy.
Dating Entertainment
• "‘Reaching the age of 15,” says
Tony,*' is the highpoint in a Cu
ban girl's life. On her fifteenth
birthday she “comes out,” when
parents have a formal dinner at
vVhach she is the main attraction.
According to Tony, American
teen-agers have a wider variety
■of dating entertainment. “While
Americans go to football games in
the fall,” states Tony, “their
neighbors in the South sit at
home, • as there is no football in
'Cuba,” There are American
movies shown, however, and bas
ketball takes the place of football
In popularity.
Plans for a December meeting,
centered around the theme of
Christmas, were discussed. Tenta
tive plans for a supper meeting
are in the making. It is hoped that
club members can fix a Spanish
meal with the help of Tony’s
mother.
Spanish Pen Pals
Each La Alianza Espanola mem
ber was given the name of a
person in a Spanish speaking
country for a pen pal. An attempt
will be made to correspond in
Spanish. Countries represented
are Chile, Paraguay, Spain, Mexi
co, and Cuba.
President of the club is Kay
Weston, senior.
Jane Parkins, 4-H Club Representative,
Wins Trip to Club Congress, Chicago
Jane Parkins, senior, -was named
National 4-H Club^ champion in
community relations projects last
Wednesday night, and as a result
will receive a $300 scholarship
which she idans to further her
education at WC.
When a plane Chartered by the
North Carolina 4-H Clubs left
Raleigh Saturday morning, No
vember 24, Jane Parkins, senior,
was one of the 35 aboard.
Being one of the eight sectional
winners in the field of commun
ity of relations involved a great
deal of work for Jane. Commun
ity relations chiefly centers around
telling others of the work of 4-H
Clubs. TO qualify for this honor
Jane gave 40 speeches, appeared
on nine television programs, and
made '31 radio broadcasts.
AH the TV programs were seen

the eight sectional winners in the
nation with her project on com

won a trip to the National 4-H
Congress which' this year took
place in Chicago, Illinois.
This past week .was a busy one
for Jane. Alor^ with approxi
mately 1200 other project win
ners and del^ates from all over
the United States, Alaska, Ha
waii, and Puerto Rico, she was
given a whirlwind tour of the
windy city. Living a life of lux
ury at the Conrad Hilton Hotel,
touring the stock markets, stock
yards^i Livestock Exposition, and
attending radio and TV programs
highlighted her week’s program.
George Perry’s “R.PI>. Piedmont;’’’
the 31 radio programs were car
ried by local radio stations. Last
spring she had her own weekly
4-H Club news spot on WBIG.
This program aroused her interest
to the point that this summer she
hopes to attend a two-weeks radio
sch-ool in Chapel Hill.
Speaking to a “live audience”
was perhaps the part of her proj
ect Jane most enjoyed. “I am
very much interested in my 4-H
work,” she comments, “and con
sequently I jump at a chance to
tell others about it.

her parents and twin sisters, Cyn

practically every 4-H honor and

She was president of her local

Fair Entries
Each year visitors to Greens
boro Fairgrounds see a number of
projects marked ‘Jane Parkins.’
She enters the cooking, home
making, clothing, canning, and
livestock divisions, just to men
tion a few. “My ‘city friends’ are
always surprised to learn that I
have had both a champion pig
and cow,” Jane laughingly com
ments.
In addition to her 4-H work,
Jane is also an active participant
in GHS’s extra-curricular activi
ties. She is a member of FTA,
BELLETTES, Quill and Scroll, a
silver star wearer, and girls’ sports
editor of HIGH LIFE, among oth
er things.
Jane was formerly recognized
at the State Recognition Day ban
