La Alianza Espanola Hears Tony Martinez Alianza Espanola members conducted their November meet ing at the home of Anne Stone, junior, Tuesday night, November 20. Tony Martinez, junior, head lined the program. He spoke of dating customs in Cuba, his na tive country. Tony told the group that Spanish teen-agers never date alone; their parents go along also. He jokingly said that the telephone is their only hope of privacy. Dating Entertainment • "‘Reaching the age of 15,” says Tony,*' is the highpoint in a Cu ban girl's life. On her fifteenth birthday she “comes out,” when parents have a formal dinner at vVhach she is the main attraction. According to Tony, American teen-agers have a wider variety ■of dating entertainment. “While Americans go to football games in the fall,” states Tony, “their neighbors in the South sit at home, • as there is no football in 'Cuba,” There are American movies shown, however, and bas ketball takes the place of football In popularity. Plans for a December meeting, centered around the theme of Christmas, were discussed. Tenta tive plans for a supper meeting are in the making. It is hoped that club members can fix a Spanish meal with the help of Tony’s mother. Spanish Pen Pals Each La Alianza Espanola mem ber was given the name of a person in a Spanish speaking country for a pen pal. An attempt will be made to correspond in Spanish. Countries represented are Chile, Paraguay, Spain, Mexi co, and Cuba. President of the club is Kay Weston, senior. Jane Parkins, 4-H Club Representative, Wins Trip to Club Congress, Chicago Jane Parkins, senior, -was named National 4-H Club^ champion in community relations projects last Wednesday night, and as a result will receive a $300 scholarship which she idans to further her education at WC. When a plane Chartered by the North Carolina 4-H Clubs left Raleigh Saturday morning, No vember 24, Jane Parkins, senior, was one of the 35 aboard. Being one of the eight sectional winners in the field of commun ity of relations involved a great deal of work for Jane. Commun ity relations chiefly centers around telling others of the work of 4-H Clubs. TO qualify for this honor Jane gave 40 speeches, appeared on nine television programs, and made '31 radio broadcasts. AH the TV programs were seen over WFMY, more specifically TH€ BEST PAW OF WE OAV VISIT OUR DAIRY 8AR- 1744 BATTIEGROUND AVE. Jane was selected as one of the eight sectional winners in the nation with her project on com munity relations, and as such won a trip to the National 4-H Congress which' this year took place in Chicago, Illinois. This past week .was a busy one for Jane. Alor^ with approxi mately 1200 other project win ners and del^ates from all over the United States, Alaska, Ha waii, and Puerto Rico, she was given a whirlwind tour of the windy city. Living a life of lux ury at the Conrad Hilton Hotel, touring the stock markets, stock yards^i Livestock Exposition, and attending radio and TV programs highlighted her week’s program. George Perry’s “R.PI>. Piedmont;’’’ the 31 radio programs were car ried by local radio stations. Last spring she had her own weekly 4-H Club news spot on WBIG. This program aroused her interest to the point that this summer she hopes to attend a two-weeks radio sch-ool in Chapel Hill. Speaking to a “live audience” was perhaps the part of her proj ect Jane most enjoyed. “I am very much interested in my 4-H work,” she comments, “and con sequently I jump at a chance to tell others about it. C. Phone 7286 have been a 4-H’er for the past seven years.” Jane’s modest, but Sally and Cynthia say that she has won practically every 4-H honor and award available during that time. She was president of her local club for two years and is now county council president. Just re cently she won second place in both the PCX state speaking and essay contests. Fair Entries Each year visitors to Greens boro Fairgrounds see a number of projects marked ‘Jane Parkins.’ She enters the cooking, home making, clothing, canning, and livestock divisions, just to men tion a few. “My ‘city friends’ are always surprised to learn that I have had both a champion pig and cow,” Jane laughingly com ments. In addition to her 4-H work, Jane is also an active participant in GHS’s extra-curricular activi ties. She is a member of FTA, BELLETTES, Quill and Scroll, a silver star wearer, and girls’ sports editor of HIGH LIFE, among oth er things. Jane was formerly recognized at the State Recognition Day ban quet in Raleigh Friday, Novem ber 23. In addition to this her picture has appeared in both the daily newspapers. Incidently her sponsor was Gene Autry, famous cowb%'' star, and the Wrigley Spearmint Company. This afternoon at 1:20 p. m. that same chartered plane will arrive back in Greensboro. Jane Parkins, an all-round 4-H’er will Junior Engineers Club Stages Demonstration Members of the Junior Engineers Club presented three radio ham demonstrations Tuesday n^ht, November 20, at the regular meet ing of the club. Jim Sowers, Jerry Kennon, and Bill Wray demonstrated a com plete set of radio gear and equip ment which they use as ham op erators. They explained the prin ciples of voice communications, radio reception, and fundamental elements of radio components. Members of the club report that they are enthusiastic about be ginning radio, and many plan to build transitor sets. At the next meeting, December 4. Jen-y Mann and Helen White will demonstrate the effects of cosmetics and tooth paste as evi dence of research which they have done.
