As Whirlie Swimmers Reign Victorious
BT MAX SNODERLY
With a quartet of Raimy Dodson,
David Nance, John Biirwell, and
Bob Hubner leading^ the way, the
Senior High swimming team has
rolled over four high school oi>-
ponents as this article goes to
press.
Raleigh, Myers Park, High
Point, and Chapel Hill are the
latest additions to the tankmen’s
victory string. The meet with
Chapel Hill High was the 13th
straight meet the team has won
in high school competition.
The aforementioned quartet has
made itself famous by setting

many individual and relay records.
Just two weeks ago these boys
combined their efforts in the 240
yard medley relay to set an im-
official national high school rec
ord. The old mark for this event
was 2-17.6; their time was 2:16.4.
This time becomes official only
after the national record bureau
approves it.
Boys Claim National Records
Dodson, swimming butterfly;
Burwell, breaststroke; Nance,
backstroke; and Hubner, freestyle;
now claim the national record for
the 160 yard medley relay also.
Their time for this event is also
up for the approval of the national
board.
Individually, all four members
of the relay teams have set rec
ords this year. Dodson holds the
national butterfly mark at 1:00.1.
Nance holds state records in the
100 yard backstroke, 120 yard in
dividual medley, and 150 yard
individual medley. Hubner has
copped the state record for the
40 yard freestyle, and Burwell
claims top honors in 100 yard
freestyle.
Post All-American Time
Every one of these boys has
posted a time comparable to All-
American times last year. All-
American high school swimmers
are picked by taking the 20 boys
who liave accomplished the 20
best times in their events during
that year.
According to swimming coach
Pat Earey, the Southeastern Meet
at Atlanta should bring forth some
more records from this crew. In
the meet, which took place last
week-end. Coach Earey predicted
that the better competition should
push our boys to the limit, thus
creating some new records.
Says Coach Earey, “This is one
of the few clubs in the southeast
that has the potential of compet
ing on a national scale; however,
the National High School Federa
tion frowns on national meets,
forcing us to stay in this district.”
For this reason, the team will
not be able to compete in the
Eastern Interscholastics as plan
ned. The New Jersey area is a
separate district causing the Sen
ior High team to be restaicted
from that meet.
At present the swimming team
practices in the Central YMCA
pool.
