C., APRIL 18, 1957 NUMBER 14 GHS Pupils Take Exam For State Math Contest Fifteen Senior High School stu dents took the State Mathematics contest examination April 12, 9- 12 a. m. in the physical education classroom in the boys’ gym. Any seniors from advanced math classes were permitted to take the test, which consisted of 10 algebra and 10 geometry questions. Strat ton Eldridge, Henry Plynt, Tom Hudgins, Gary Massel, James Spence, Larry Brown, and Bill Hanling took the exam. The other seniors were David E. Miller, Rob ert Willett, Ronnie Parks, Allen Thomas, Jay Lambeth, Doug Al bright, Bob Tabom, and Alex Decker. Miss Ida Belle Moore, supervi sor. Grace Alton, Mrs. Mabel Plea sants, and Mrs. Julia Roe, math teachers, gave the exaimination. One paper will be sent from ea«'l' high school in the state which participates in the contest. The state winner will receive a $150 scholarship to Carolina. Last ye. r the paper of David Bescherer was sent from Sex.ior and placed sfcond in the siate contest. Newly elected to fill the presi dencies and vice-presidencies of the rising Senior and Junior Class es are, left to right descending the sair, Roy Michaux and Harry Smith of the class of 1958 and Jerry Robertson and Mackie Stout of class of 1959. To the right is Sandra Holdeme^ who is presi dent of GH9» Holderness Elected As GHS Presiednt For Coming Year; Sink Elected Veep Sandra Holderness, rising senior, was elected president of GHS Fri day, April 12, the first girl presi dent ever to be elected in the his tory of the school. Other Officers To serve along with her are Peggy Sink, vice-president; Susan Caviness, Secretary; Pete Banner, treasurer; Linda Cash well, chair man of Youth Recreation Com mittee; and Roger English, traffic chief. Sandra’s opposing candidate was Jey Deifell. Peggy defeated Boyce Crothers, while Susan and Pete won over Sheila Sapero and Tom my Tuttle, respectively. Linda came out victorious over Jean Medearis, and Roger over Jim Es kridge. Senior Class Officers Senior Class officers were chos en as follows: Roy Michaux, presi dent; who defeated Wallace Wil liams; Harry Smith, vice-presi dent, who won over Ann Robin son, and Jan Phillips, secretary, over Blanche Bonner. Spencer Gailcrd was named treasurer after t'^jping Janet Coble. Representatives to the Student Council from the Senior dlass are Marsha Bumpass, Meyressa Hughes, Jim McGregor, Lynn Mc Gregor, Laura Pearce, Kitty White, and Prissy Wyrick. To serve on the Youth Recrea tions Committee are Evelyn Byrd, Nancy Hewett, Eddie Hines, Ra chel Jessup, Jan Loman, Nancy McDowell, and Becky Tuck. Jerry Robertson was named president of the rising Junior Class. To serve along with him Gold Star Wearers Announced 33 Senior Students Wear Gold Stars; 20 Seniors, 51 Juniors Obtain Silver Gold star wearers for the 1956- 57 school year number 33, while 20 seniors and 51 juniors have attained silver stars, according to Mrs. Blanche Smith, chairman of the honor roll committee for the Junior and Senior Classes. Sophomores are excluded from both these lists, as gold star wear ers must make honor roll 13 con- secuftive times, and silver star wearers must be on honor roll seven times. Seniors who are now wearing gold stars and taking five 1426 Registered; 1195 Voted In Lost Weeks’ Elections Throughout the spring elections special emphasis was placed on the right and duty of every high school student to vote; the fol lowing tabulations reveal the ef fects of this campaign. Out of 1750 students in Senior High, 1426 registered. Of that number 1195 voted. Prom the Senior Class of approximately 500 members, 390 registered and 291 voted. The Junior Class of ap proximately the same number had 436 to turn out for registration and 396 for voting.' The sopho mores, having 700 or more stu dents in their class, had 590 to register and 508 to vote. Percentage wise 82 per cent of the GHS student body took time to register. 84 per cent of those registered voted. From the Senior Class 78 per cent registered and 75 per cent of that number voted. The juniors led with the highest percentage, having 87 per cent registered and 91 per cent of that group voting. Sophomores turned out 84 per cent strong to register and 86 per cent of those who regis tered voted. The Senior Class ranked lowest in overall percentage of voters, having only 58 percent of the class going to the polls. Next came the sophomores with 73 percent of their group voting. Highest again in total number of class voters were the juniors with 79 percent of that class’s members voting. Whirligig Wednesday, April 17 WHIRUGIGs for 1956-57 were distributed to home rooms Wed nesday, April 17, one month earlier than the usual date for release. . The new book, w'hich is covered in light blue leather, is dedicated *0 the fa^culty members who have been at GHS the longest. It stress es the varied facets of high school life, especially the many advant ages available to GHS students other than purely academic activ ities. This year’s volume is 16 pages longer than last year’s. A total, of 1375 copies were ordered, the overall cost amounting to approxi mately $11,000. majors will be permitted to exempt two exams this spring. Heading the gold star list are Elizabeth Antrim, Larry Brown, Ann Butler, David Craig, and James Ebert. Stratton Eldridge. Shirley Dowd, Alex Decker, Henry Plynt, Gilbert Prank, Hilda Gar rett, and Libby Garvin have also obtained their gold stars, as have Bill Hanling, Elwood Hartman, Buck Hoyle, Tom Hudgins, Ruth Hunt, John Jessup, and Judy Kel- lett. Others who have been on honor roll 13 consecutive times are Nan cy Lambeth, Jane Lynch, Ruth McCulloch, Jane McLennan. Jerry Mann, Jean Ogbum, Maranell Pearsall, and Katherine Polk. Con cluding the list of 33 are Judy Shallant, Margie Rose, James Spence, Barbara Taylor, Kay Wes ton, and Kay Wood. Seniors eligit'sc to omit one exam this semester include Doug Al bright, Shirley Bernau. Bonnie Adelstein, Barbara Coble, Mary Pat Elig, Hai-vin Dickey, Joe Hens ley, and Gary Massel. Those elected to posts on the Student Council, from the Junior Class are Sue Ellen Barker, Becky Chambers. Marty Cone, Carol EichhorA, Robin Parr, Bob Poster, Judy Harrill, Margaret Humphrey, Suzanne Humphrey, Carol Over- street, and Mimi Ridenhour. Members of the Youth Recre ation Committee are James Apple, Carole Coble, Mary Win Corcoran, Ellen Fields, Betsy Glenn, Ronnie Jordan, Pat Phillips. Sandra Sharpe,’'' Dottie Sherrill, Martha Spence, and Jeannie Turner. Officers from the Sophomore Class will be elected next fall after the arrival of the group. James Spence, president of the Senior Class, served as chairman of the Election Committee during the elections. Bill O’Brien, presi dent of the school, released the results of the voting.
