Martinsville Whips GHS;
Wilson Stars in Defeat
Charlie “Stick” Wilson starred
as Martinsville, Virginia’s Bulldogs
defeated the Whirlies by a 42-32
score on the home court Thursday
night, February 5.
In the first quarter neither team
was able to generate much of an
offense against the tight zone de
fense that both teams used. In
hopes of pulling their opponent
out of the zone each of the coach
es had his boys play possession
basketball. As a result of the
slowed-down play the score at the
quarter’ end was a stand-off at
7-7.
The second quarter was almost
a repetition of the first as both
teams kept doggedly to their con-

Whirlies Look To Future;
Encounter W inston T onight
Greensboro Senior High’s Whir
lies, recently upset by the surpris
ing Martinsville, Virginia, cagers
will take on Winston-Salem here
tonight in an important conference
contest and then will travel to
Lynchburg, Virginia to encounter
their team for the second time.
The Whirlies were surprised by
Martinsville and should be ready
for Winston, having defeated them
earlier in the year. Winston has
not been niuch of a threat in the
Central AAA Conference this year;
however, they are capable of up
setting any team.
Lynchburg will be ready for the
Whirlies tomorrow night, having
been defeated here in our own
gym in our first game of the year.
Lynchburg is hard to beat on their
home court and showed their skill
by beating Raleigh in our gym in
a comeback effort earlier this year.
The record of the Whirlies is
now 10-3, and the conference rec
ord is 3-1, good enough for a first
place tie. The Whirlies have seven
more games to play before the
State Tournament, March 11-14.
They have four more conference
games. Three of these will be
played here, including the game
tonight.
The Lynchburg team won AAA
championship of Virginia last year
and their experienced players are
back this year. They were just
starting the season when we
played them before and with the
season one half over, they will be
considerably harder to handle.
Randy Blackwell, the fine Whir-
lie guard who sprained his ankle
and missed the last few games, is
expected to be ready for action
tonight. Thus, the probable Whir-
lie starters will be Bob Jamieson,
Jr., at center. Stick Wilson and
Larry Hudson at forward, and
Tommy Edwards and Blackwell at
guard.
I servative offense and zone defense.
1 Only the rebounding of Stick held
the victorious Bulldogs within
close range of the Whirlies. Wil
son’s outstanding work under the
boards and an inability to score
that matched that of GHS held
the score to 15-13 in favor of
Martinsville at halftime.
The third quarter was just like
the first two—slow and deliberate.
The Whirlies were still guilty of
poor shooting and still had to rely
on the fact that Martinsville could
not hit either. With neither team
able to score proficiently the score
remained at a very low mark at
the quarter’s end when the Bull
dogs led 22-19. Play in this last
quarter was considerably rougher
than the entire first half. Eight
fouls were called during the quar
ter as compared to seven in the
whole initial half.
The tempo of play speeded up
considerably in the last eight min
utes of play as the Whirlies came
out of their zone in hopes of re
gaining the lead. This strategy
might have worked if it had not
been for Regie Campbell, scoring
star of the Bulldogs. He scored
14 points for the night, six of
which came in this last period
when GHS threatened to close the
gap. As the play got fast and
furious the Bulldogs showed why
they have a 13-1 record. They
capitalized on the Whirlie mistakes
and fouls.
