March 13, 1959 High Life Page Five Eastern invitational Near; Whirlette Swimmers Set Another group around GHS that gets very little credit for its hard work is the girls’ swimming team. Under the excellent direction of Coach Jamieson, they practice in the WC pool every night from 6 till 7. The girls came back from the Atlanta meet February 7 with top honors, having proved to the Georgia girls that lightning (or rather Greensboro) can strike three times. In that overwhelm ing victory the GHS mermaids carried off seven of the ten first places and set three meet records. Eastern Invitational The girls’ next meet is the fourth annual Eastern Indoor In vitational to be held at Woman’s College, March 21, just a week from tomorrow. Although the Whirlette mermaids lost this meet to Congressional Country Club of Washington, D. C., last year, they are ready and waiting to get "re venge. Several other top teams are expected, and even if the way is rough, the Greensboro girls are hot easily beaten. Judy Weaver, Betsy Glynn, and Frances McNairy are three of the fastest breaststroke swimmers on the Eastern Seaboard. Judy and Betsy, along with Penny Taliaferro are good on the individual medley. Penny is also a champion back- stroker and holds quite a few records. Karen Gill is the, team’s outstanding distance swimmer and Carolyn Brown runs her a close second when she is not in the breastroke or butterfly events. Christina Stewart swims the 50 and 100 yard freestyle races and is a valuable addition to the relay teams. The team’s newest member, Christina Bird, ,is an up-and-com ing freestyle swimmer. Annette Glanckopf swims the freestyle and backstroke events. Swimming Team Places In State Meet To Complete Season Here On March 21 stop, look, and answer me this one: What are considered the ma jor sports at Greensboro Senior High and what are the minor ones? Finished? Well the answer is that there are no major or minor sports at GHS. The Whirlies are putting top teams into the fields of bas ketball, baseball, wrestling, golf, football, and swimming. Take swimming for instance. Senior High HAS always boasted a strong swimming team, with Ranny Dodson, currently a star at Carolina, and Pat Earey, head Coach for the Tar Heels, both products of GHS swimming. This year’s team is no excep tion. It is a good team, but an up and down team; a team which has produced many bright individual stars and shared a few record- shattering moments, but one which as this story is being written, has more defeats on its record than victories. At this point in the season. Coach Bondanella’s tankmen own a 3-5 record, losing twice to Meyers Park and once COBLE SPORTING GOODS 119 NORTH GREENE PHONE BR 2-0912 D0N7 SAY BREAD sarHOLSDM BAKED FRESH DAILY JONES BROTHERS BAKERY BEST FOR YOU 104 E. The Whirlies have been in four larger meets; placing third in the East CaroUna Inivitational and Atlanta meets and second in the Southern High School Cham pionships and in the State Meet. The high point of the season has been the State Meet, held March 7 at Chapel Hill. In this very im portant meet the Whirlie tank men finished second behind Myers Park of Charlotte. Although they didn’t win the team championship GHS’s boys carried off more first places than any other team, The outstanding medley relay team of Harry Schiffman, Dan Derby, Paul Sikes, and Butch Edwards easily won their eVent in record time Mackie Stout. Lem Walters. Fred Wedler, and Edwards combined to give the Whirlies a sweep of the relay events by winning the 200-yard freestyle relay Also placing first in individual events were Derby, in the 100- meter flystroke, Sikes in the back- stroke. and Walters in the 150 meter individual medley. Gaining points for GHS through second and third place finishes were Skipper Burwell in the 200 and 400 meter freestyle, and Goddy Pier in the Individual medley and the breastroke. Tommy Steed rounded out the Whirlie scoring by placing second in the diving events. Playing an important part in any swimming meet is the diving event. Coach Bcndanella has noth ing but praise for his diving ace, boro, March 21. Left to right Lem Walters, Harry Schiffman, Paul Sikes, and Dan Derby. Tommy Steed. Bondanella says that Steed has helped the team very much this year. His is a top- noted diver and was a strong contender for the state diving championship this year, although finishing second. But, above all ,it is the team it self that Coach Bondanella is quick to praise.
