Fountain^ Everhart Advise Nev/ Medical Organization A new organization, the Medical Club, has been started this year under the direction of Mrs. Kate Everhart and Mrs. Carol Foun tain ,who will be the advisors. Scottie Troxler, senior, is or ganizing the club with the help of Dr. Benbow. The members will be chosen on the basis of grades, on their interest in the medical profession, and also on the num Annual College Day To Begin October 15 The annual College Day will again be held in Senior’s gym October 15 and 16 in order to acquaint students with colleges that they may be interested in attending. City and coimty schools wdll participate. Senior High students will talk with the various college representatives October 15, and the remainder of the time buses from Page, Curry, and the near by county schools will bring students to Senior’s gym. Each junior and senior planning to go to college will visit the counse lors at an appointed time during the day. Nearly all colleges of higher education in North Carolina, as well as many from out of state, will be presented. ber of science courses they have taken. Dr. Benbow will be the guest speaker at the first meeting, Octo ber 13 at 7:30 in the Science Build ing. Everyone who signed up is invited to attend. They are planning irregular meetings since they will have to take their trips on Friday after noons and Saturdays. The most important activity on the schedule is watching an operation at Duke. Some of the other activities plan ned are visits to the Duke and Carolina Medical Schools to get an idea of how medical students of today get an education. Other activities planned are visits to the WC Nursing School and Cone Me morial hospital. The purposes of this organiza tion ar e(l) if the doctors in town choose to give some student a scholarship, they will have a re source from which to choose some one, and (2) those who are plan ning to study medicine will be better acquainted with it before hand. There has been a great deal of interest shown in the club thus far. Mr. Routh, Head Speaker AtOpening PTS AMeeting Mr. A. P. Routh was the guest speaker at the first Parent- Teacher-Student-Association meet ing which took place Thursday, September 24, at Senior High School. The meeting started in the cafe teria at 6:00 p.m. with a dinner for the parents. At 7:30 p.m. the grou p went into the audi torium for the business meeting. The Reverend William D. Verker began with a short devotion, and the president, Mrs. Frank Thompson, welcomed the parents. Following this Mrs. Thompson introduced Carol Smith, president of Senior. Carol in turn .introduced the student board and said that she hoped • that there would be good relations between the par ents, teachers, and students. It was announced that the next meeting would be held on October 22. It was stated that at this meet- Mrs. Madlin Serves On Language Board Mrs. Mary Madlin, Latin teache’ and Junior Classical League ad visor. has been selected to become a member of the state Foreign Language Committee. She was chosen by the presenl membership, on the recommenda tion of Dr. B. L. Ullman, former head of the classic department at the University of North Carolina, to act on this board. The committee met September 26 at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill to discuss the foreign language curriculum to be recommended to the Central Curriculum Study Committee. ing the parents would visit the different rooms of the teachers. Then the budget for the on-coming year was read by the treasurer of the PTSA, Bob Cunningham. The speaker of the evening, Mr. A. P. Routh, was next on program. After giving a brief history of Senior, he stated that the enroll ment this year was 1735 students Whereas in the three school area. Brooks, Kiser, and Senior, the enrollment was 3,000. He also related that it would take a student 16 years to com plete all of the courses that the High School has to offer. Mr. Routh further commented on the excellent library, visual aids, and guidance center that we have. It was stated that 65% of the graduates attended some college. While on the subject of colleges, Mr. Routh brought up the fact that there would be a college day in mid-October and that some 60 colleges would be represented. He also invited the parents to come to college day. Several other things were touch ed on. Among them were the serv ice clubs, accelerated classes, test ing programs, the parking lot and cars at Senior, and requirements for getting into colleges. In clos ing Mr. Routh stated that there were three things the parents could do to help their teenager at Senior. First, to encourage him to prepare his lesson for five days of school, and this means doing homework on the weekends. Sec ond, to allow no telephone calls for a two hour period set aside for study. Third, Mr. Routh men tioned that the student could not study best while watching tele vision. Dickie Bowen, president of the senior class, will announce GHS’s homecoming queen during the half-time activities of the October 9 football game against Burling ton. The student body will elect the queen from the eighteen girls in the homecoming court by secret ballot. Each member of the court is sponsored by a senior varsity football player and will be pre sented with her escort before the winner is announced. Sheila Sapero Sheila Sapero, 1958-59, home coming queen, escorted by Jerry Robertson; Robin Farr, 1958-59 runner-up, escorted by David Liner and Peggy Sink, 1957-58 queen, escorted by Roy Michaux will be presented as the alumni court. Dickie will present both the runner-up and the queen with a dozen long-stemmed red roses. The queen and her court will then be driven around the stadium and returned to the bleachers to view/ the remaining half of the game.. They will be honored at the open- house following the game. George Rosenthal, senior, is acting as announcer for the pre sentation. Sondra Childress and' Harriet Thompson, seniors, are co- chairmen for the event which is; sponsored by the student council. Pat Adams To Attend Pat Adams, President of the North Carolina High School Li brary Association and a member of the Senior High Library staff, has recently been asked to attend the meeting of the North Carolinr High School librarians in Durham- October 8-10. Pat is planning to attend these meetings with Miss Mildred Her ring and Miss Catherine Weir, as sistant librarian. According to Miss Herring, this is a great honor for Pat. At their first meeting, the li brary staff at Senior elected their new officers. Serving as president for 1959-60 will be A1 Bennett. The remaining slate of the officers will he Sallie Marsh, vice-presi dent; Patty Smith, secretary; treas urer, Amanda Bullock; and report er, Dale Keller.
