Page Four HIGH LIFE SPORTS SECTION February 5,1959 Raleigh DefeatsGreensboro In Non-Conference Game The Greensboro High Whirlies were handed their fourth defeat of the season by the Raleigh Caps here last Saturday. The partisan Greensboro crowd saw the home favorites blow a twelve point lead in the first quar ter. The Whirlies, leading 17-5, hit a cold spree and were ahead by only one point at the half. The Caps took a three point advantage into the final quarter and held it although there were some anxious times for the visi tors. The turning point of the game came when Fred Black s lay-up was tipped out of the bas ket by one of the Whirlies who was going for the rebound. One official said the basket was good while the other said it was not. Had the two-pointer counted the Whirlies would have had a three- point lead with about three min utes left in the contest. Although it did not count the Whirlies were not out of the ball game. Raleigh moved'into a quick seven point lead scoring eight while blanking the Whirlies. Bob Jamieson, R. F. Taylor, and Pete Homey cut the lead back to three. But the Whirlies could move no closer. When one of Taylor’s shots roll ed around the rim and fell off, the Whirlies were doomed. It must be noted that Taylor had a badly bruised leg and could not go at full strength. It was a bad night for the Whirlies leading scorer. He tallied only seven. Leading scorer for the Whirlies was Jamieson with 12 points fol lowed by Homey with nine. Wrestlers Trample Bison; Squad Improves Steadily Greensboro Senior High’s wres tling team defeated the High Point grapplers here Thursday night, January 28, by a score of 31-15, as the Whirlies won all but three matches. The Whirlies took the early lead 3-0 after the first match. Then came a forfeit as one of the Whirlies was slightly overweight and was disqualified. High Point thus took the lead at 5-3. Two straight decisions and a pin gave the Greensboro matmen the lead again at 14-5 after the fifth match. The Bison then started to roll and won the next two matches to take a 15-14 lead, and it looked as if the tables were turned. How ever, the Bison were not able to win a single point during the re maining five matches. After regaining the lead at 10-15 Leith Singletary’s pin in the on eighth match, the Whirlies were never headed as they won all four Jayvees Down Curry 70-20 In Easy Romp Romped is not the word to de scribe the way the Jayvees rolled over Curry 0-29 here last Friday night in an nonconference basket ball game. The starter for the little Whir lies were West, Wilson, Black, O’Brien and Davis. The J.V.’s made 20 points the first quarter to Curry’s 4. Jimmy Wilson was the outstanding player for Greensboro this quarter. Curry tried many times to break the Whirlie defense but was sadly disappointed. The fourth quarter was just about like the three before the little Whirlie’s great playing kept Curry’s score to eight points. The final score in favor of Greensboro 70-29. The high scorers for the team were Black and Lowe both with 12 points each. Wilson fol lowed with 9 points. The top men for Curry were Wade with 13 and Baxter got 7. remaining matches by decisions and took the victory 31-15. There were foim pins recorded in the matches—two for each team. Yank Kirkman pinned his High Point opponent in only 48 seconds. Leith Singletary registered the other pin for the Whirlies. This victory shows that the Whirlie wrestlers needed only ex perience to become a fine squad. The boys in the lightweight class es were inexperienced at first and had trouble. They have gained some of that experience now, and it is telling in the outcome of the matches. In the High Point match, they lost only three of the first seven matches, and one of those defeats was a forfeit. It now appears that the team is shaping up very well for the state championships. Monday, February 1, the grap plers won another even more de cisive match. They walloped Lex ington’s Wildcats 41-11 in a one sided battle featured by six Whir lie pins. Lexington won three of the first four matches for an 11-3 lead, but could not score no more. John Kirkman started the rout by pin ning his man in only 52 seconds. Kirkman seems to be shaping up as a fine wrestler on the basis of these two matches. A little more support from the student body could be a great help to the team. One of the main reason that the WhirUe basketball team is now ranked first in the Central 4-A Conference is the fine rebounding strength. Shown above is Fred Biack palling down a re bound against one of the WhirUe foes. ’The WhirUes must have repeated support for the remainder of the season if they are to successfully defend their state champlonsMp.
