Greene St. BY DAN CONWAY Bouyant as the Whirlie “fish- men” look this year, hours of de termination and hard work are the keys to the teams’ success. Vic-, tories do not come easy in any sport, but it can be said swimming is one of the most thrilling and “breath-taking” sports of all. Since a good word is in order for our Whirlie cagers, certainly, there should be recognition for the work Senior’s tankmen have done. Dan Derby, a senior and captain of the team, holds the state record in the 100-yard breaststroke at a speed of sixty nkie and nine- tenths seconds. Dan is making great strides to break his own record in the Southern Invitation al Meet which will be held in Chapel Hill, February 20, of this year. He’s predicted to be the most outstanding member of the Greensboro team this year for also being an excellent all-round swim mer. Bill Kesler, another outstand ing senior, is extremely well vers ed in diving and is expected to lead the team in the diving events this winter. Jnniors Lem Walters ,one of four jun iors on the tank-team hasn’t seen much action in the water this year, but he is favored to grasp the state 400 yard record for free style by the end of next year. Skipper Bxurwell, Billy Brooks, and Joddy Peer, all juniors, took part in several meets last year, ranking high in every event. These boys really look good this year. Their work this winter will pay off in indispensable “know-how” next season. All of the junior and senior boys are lettermen. Coach Frank Bondanella has high hopes for the sophomores in the coming seasons. Jim Petty and Ed Oliver represent the sophs. According to Coach Bondanella, Petty’s events lie in the short distance swims (about 50 yards). Oliver’s talents lie in diving. He’s shaping up and will give stiff competition in the diving events in the latter part of the season. Participated in Meets This year GHS’s swimming team has participated in three out of five swimming meets scheduled for this season. The first meet was with the Carolina Freshmen, Jan uary 9, the second meet with Page was called off ,the third was the East Carolina Invitational Meet, January 16, the fourth with Myers Park was also called off ,and the last meet was with Chapel Hill, January 30. Hard Workouts To attain such heights in the art of swimming, developing tech nique, and endurance must be un dertaken and strict health rules followed. How do these boys do it? The answer lies in daily, workouts. Seven a.m. seems to be the break of dawn to many of us—it is. But being at the Central YMCA at 7 a.m. is a MUST for these guys. First, to loosen the leg muscles, they each kick a quarter of a mile on a flutter board. Next, a semi- inflated inner-tube is placed about each swimmer’s legs so he’ll have to pull the next quarter mile. The rest of the workout is followed by the 400 yard swim the 100 yard clocked races, the two lap sprints, and the grand finale when Coach Bondanella falls into the pool.
