March 17, 1961 High Life Page Five Girls* Basketball Squad Downs Bessemer 46-36 Bessemer was defeated by the Senior High girls’ basketball team Thursday, March 9. The game was closely played with the final score Greensboro 46 and Bessemer 38. Scoring the victory points for Greensboro were Patricia Smith, sophomore, with 33; senior Carl ton Cann with 5; sophomore Nan cy Yates, with 4; Gail Weston, sophomore, with 2; and Anna Ryan, senior, with 1. The activity of the whole game centered around one five foot-two inch senior guard “Skipper” Quinn who usually came up with the ball someway or the other. There is nothing to describe the looks on Bessemer’s forwards’ faces When “Skipper” came diving through one of the Bessemer’s tall forward’s legs to tie up the ball. The little surprise attacks such as unexpectedly being be tween Bessemer and the ball I know made Bessemer wish more and more that she was playing on their team. “Skipper” was aided in guarding by two other great guards; Nancy Yates, and Sarah Jo Davis, senior. The sub stituting guard was Jane McCor mick, who also did a good job. As the guards would get the ball; they would very carefully, with teamwork, work the ball up court. The skill the guards showed in this game was praised greatly by Mrs. Eleanor Lambert and stu dent teacher, Miss Ketner, from Woman’s College. They couldn’t have done a more beautiful job. The starting line-up for Senior were forwards: Carlton Cann, Pa tricia Smith and Anna Ryan. Guards: “Skipper” Quinn, Sarah Jo Davis and Nancy Yates. The substituting forwards were Dee Savageau, Gail Weston, and Nan cy Yates. The standing is eight won and two lost for the varsity team. The average points per game for the starting forwards are Patricia Smith with 16; Carlton Cann with 13 and Dee Savageau with 7. High Life Beauties APPLIANCE and T. V. THE ARTS AT SENIOR Senior High students recently attended two of the most en lightening and inspiring assem blies presented this year. The music department was in charge of these assemblies. The first was presented by the band and choir, February 28, and the orchestra performed for the sec- ICE SKATING MARCH 19,20.21 ond, March 7. The outstanding segment of the band and choir program was the climatic end when the band and choir performed Mr. Thomas Cousins’ masterful interpretaion of the old Biblical story of Exodus and Sinai. Mr. John Barnes Chance, who was sent to Greensboro for a year by the Ford Foundation to com pose for the city schools, wrote the opening piece rendered by the band. Incantation and Dance. Mr. Herbert Hazelman, band di rector, directed this stirring intro duction to a most enjoyable pro gram. Miss Eula Tuttle’s choir never sang more professionally or earn estly. Each member of the choir sang as if his entire life was cen tered around his music, and the effect was overwhelming. ' TOt—tor— Orchestra Program Equally entertaining was the orchestra program, which opened with a cello solo by Lauren Scott of the Kiser Jr. High orchestra, accompanied on the piano by Dede Kent. Lauren is an eighth grader, and Dede_is a ninth grader. Laur en played two movements. Largo and Allegro from Sonata Five by Vivaldi, greatly impressing her high school audience. Mr. Chance has composed num erous pieces for the orchestra, three of which were played in the assembly. The Ferocious Fugue, was the viola’s revenge on the violins because the violins usual ly introduce a number and the violas come in. The Ferocious Fugue reverses this arrangement. Misstep March and Fiddl’esophy, also by Mr. Chance, were played, as well as selections by other composers. —- aoi MARTIN’S STUDIO CANDID PHOTOGRAPHERS FOR WHIRLIGIG 112 EAST GASTON STREET PHONE BR 2-7237 ®a ocaoE lOE lOE FRANKLIN DRUG STORES FOUR CONVENIENT LOCATIONS TO SERVE YOU Ancient patterns return to glory in our M'GRegor*®MTDBS j collection At last, in McGregor’s Batik collection, color and pattern return to the male sports-wardrobe.
