October 9, 1961 High Life Page Three SENIOR STEADIES BY TERRY JONES Nag, nag, nag! She says he’s moody. He says , she’s pestering. He doesn’t like her pesky dog, Pretzel. He has a memory like an elephant, or, as she says, a “con venient” memory. He doesn’t re member sweet romantic moments, instead he remembers funny or embarrassing things. In the only- class they have together, he won’t even speak. When fourth period ends, he “flies out to lunch with Henry Deal.” Contrary to any opinion you may have formed from the first paragraph, this IS a story about two people living in that dreamy paradise of love. Ah, yes, love IS strange! “Aei” insists that she first met “Doc” in the fourth grade. Doc argues that it was the sixth grade when he remembers Aci because of her nickname, “Spitfire.” Doc had to move to Florida for two and a half years, but the flame of their romance kept burning through letters. Although Doc and Aci were back together in the eighth grade at Kiser, their next date wasn’t until January 1, 1960. They have dated almost every THE BOAR AND (ASTIE Greensboro*s Most Popular Sandwich Shop Spacious Parking Ground West Market Street Ext. weekend from that time forward. Prom Date One would think that with the beginning of spring and the near ness of the prom, that Aci would be busy preparing her dress and dreaming of that wonderful night with Doc. Well, how could she do either if unpredictable Doc had asked someone else to the Prom? Finally, a week before the Prom, Doc called Aci, did some power ful explaining, and secured a date with Aci for the dance. Aci is almost accustomed to Doc’s ways by now, although his two band trips and beach trip, which brought her a total of only three post cards, wasn’t encour aging. Doc never asks Aci for a date in advance. He calls her about 5:30 or 6:00 o’clock on Sat urday night. When she answers, he never says “Hello, Darling” or anything sweet, just “You want to go to the show tonight?” Then there was the night they went to the drive-in. His hopes were high at a chance for a pass that night. She was anxious, and he was nervous as they moved closer together. Then came the tense moment. He slowly opened the box of pop corn, and to his dismay found no pass. With his chances at a pass gone. Doc spent a lovely evening chewing gum, eating chocolate, and chewing more gum. Such a life! By the way, fruit-flavored gum is Doc’s favor ite food. It’s a good thing that Doc’s car, “The Gray Ghost,” isn’t a convertible because it rains almost everytime they date. Doc says that they used to fight, hut don’t now because he’s just giving up for the time being. Activities Actually, with all their activi ties, it’s a wonder they have time to date, must less light. Doc is in the band, president of the Senior Class, in the Medical Club, His tory Honor Society, Junior JC’s, and president of his church fellow ship. Aci is in FTA,. Choir, Quill and Scroll, and Torchlight. Doc wants to be a doctor; Aci, a teach er. Look for Doc around Cam Penfield, Dale Smith, Mike JLawr- ence, or Don Cunningham. Check with Mary Hartman, Beverly Wil kinson, or Jeanne Whitaker about Aci. Aci and Doc are putting their companionship to a creative pur pose. Aci has written the Christ mas Pageant for this year, and she and Doc are co-chairmen of the program. During last year’s elections, Aci’s hand wrote five hundred cards and made over one hundred posters for her number one candidate. Doc. (If that ain’t devotion, I don’t know what Is.) Doc’s brother said that his mother went to the hospital on November 25 expecting a turkey dinner and got Doc. Thanksgiving now has an extra special meaning for Aci. Even if Doc doesn’t serenade Aci xmder her window with his guitar on some moonlit night, they can always nestle close together on the couch—in front of a warm crackling fire and listen to the Kingston Trio as Doe chews his fruit flavored gum and explains the scientific electronic aspects of true-to-life stereo to Aci.
