C., NOV. 3, 1961 NO. 4 Sue Yelverton Runs As State FTA Prexy Sue Yelverton, junior, has been chosen by the FTA members to run for the office of state FTA president. Campaigns and elections will be conducted at the state FTA con vention at Lenoir Rhyne College, Hickory, on November 18. Libby McComb, senior, is serving as chairman of the committee formed to take charge of Sue’s campaign. The group met recently for a poster party. A chartered bus will take the Senior High FTA members to Hickory for the convention. Miss Estelle Mitchell, French teacher, and Miss Mozelle Causey, dramatics teacher, are advisers for FTA. o Five Senior Students Receive Commendation Five GHS seniors will receive formal letters of commendation signed by Principal A. P. Routh and John M. Stalmaker, president of the National Merit Scholarship Corporation, for high perform ances on the National Merit Schol arship Qualifying Test given last spring. The students are Bob Groat, Jayne Marsh, Dan Richman, Dale Stansbury, and Bill Tippett. Semifinalists and commended students together constitute less than two per cent of all high school seniors. Senior High has twelve semifinalists. Cheerleaders Choose Sheets HeadAlternate Carol Sheets has been chosen by the other members of the cheerleading squad to act as al ternate head cheerleader in case of the absence of Georgianna Sar- tin, head cheerleader. Besides cheerleading, Carol is also a member of Torchlight, Civ- inettes, and has been a member of the Student Council for two years. In her sophomore year she was a sophomore class officer. In addition, she makes honor roll regularly. Carol has been a cheerleader for four years and has been a varsity cheerleader since her sophomore year. Pictured above are the 18 newly-tapped members of Torchlight National Honor Society, standing with the six robed students who are previous members. 82 GHS Students Receive Gold and Silver Stars Eighty-two GHS students have been named Gold and Silver Star wearers for the first six weeks’ grading period. Twenty-six seniors received gold stars this term. Homerooms 301 and 22 each had three people to earn gold stars. From homeroom 301 come Lana Miller, Sandra Neal, and Sandra Parker. Students from homeroom 22 include Cherry Swaringen, Bill Tippett, and Jane Walters. Other gold star wearers are Rick Arhart, Pete Bondanella, Cecie Boren, Ann Bull, Sara Collins, Carolyn Dees, and Jim Freedman. Rhea Jacobs, Bob Groat, Sherry Kellet, Roger Lewis, Jayne Marsh, Brenda Miller, Elaine Pelkey, Sam my Pegram, Dan Richman, Kaye Riley, Dale Stansbury, Beverly Wilkinson, and Nora Wilson earned the right to wear gold stars. Also making honor roll seven times are Nancy Smith, Chini Smith, Kay Wharton, Carolyn Zim merman, Louise Rufty, James Powell, and John Weisner. Torchlight Inducts 18 New Hembers Eighteen new members were in ducted into the Torchlight Nation al Honor Society at the annual fall induction last Tuesday. The eighteen new members are; Rich Arhart, Elizabeth Banner, Charles Bennett, Charles Crumley, Jimmy Freedman, Robert Groat' Mary Hartman, Roger Lewis, Sam my Pegram, Raemon Polk, Dan Richman, Kaye Riley, Dale Stans bury, Anne Tate, Bill Tippett, Jane Walters, Jean Whitaker, and Bev erly Wilkinson. Scholarship, leadership, charac ter, and service are all taken into consideration in the choosing of a member. An average of 90 must be maintained as proof of scholas tic ability as well as service to the school and church and a favor able conduct record. Pete Bondanella, President of Torchlight, presided over the pro gram. Speeches were given by four mernbers of the club of the four qualifications for membership. Sherry Kellett spoke on scholar ship, Sherrill Newnam on leader ship, Carol Sheets on service, and Cecie Boren on character. Another tapping in which jun iors as well as seniors will be inducted, will be conducted this spring. Mrs. Mary Madlin, Latin teacher, and Miss Sara Mims, head of the English department, are advisers of Torchlight. Torchlight members are select ed from all those eligible by a faculty vote. Routh; the Senior class adviser; the Senior Class Miss Herring Announces New Volumes In Library Miss Mildred Herring has an nounced the arrival of several new books in the Senior High Li brary. Members of the library staff plan a Book Week dinner at the Mayfair Cafeteria, November 14. Mrs. Kathleen Pfaff will speak on “Mind-Stretching Reading.” Miss Herring has announced that students may subscribe to Senior Scholastics for $1.50 per year, and may write opinions on the Jam Session page. counsellor; a representative of vo cational education; Mrs. Mary Madlin and Miss Sara Mims, Torchlight co-sponsors; and Miss' Ida Belle Moore tallies the voting. Sixteen Selected To History Group Sixteen seniors have been select ed for membership in the History Honor Society. Chip Crumley, membership chair man, announced that new members include Barbara Barney, Bob Kel ler, Jo Ann Knight, Linda Lael, Mike Lawrence, Roger Lewis, and Libby McComb, Jayne Marsh, Jody Nuckolls, Sandra Parker, Sammy Pegram, Raemon Polk, Kaye Riley,, Jane Walters, Beverly Wilkinson, and Hobart Kellam also have been, accepted as members. Charles Bennett, program chair man of the group, has announced that the November 7 meeting will be a panel discussion on Persia and Greece. Panel members will include Lucy O’Brien Mary Hart man, Ed White and Don Cunning ham. Members Of Medical Club Attend Series On Medicine Members of the Medical Club recently attended a series of med ical exhibits and discussions held at Elliott Hall on the Woman’s College campus. After viewing the exhibits, the club members attended group meetings on pre-medicine, medi cal technology, nursing, and pre physical therapy. The purpose of the sessions was to make clearer to students the background nec essary to enter the medical field. Some members of the club re turned to the evening session at Elliott Hall to hear an address by Dr. Doris A Howell, associate professor of pediatrics at Duke University Medical School. Dr. Howell spoke on “Women in Med icine and Para-Medicine Profes sions.” Brown Presents Pins To GHS Good Citizens Two citizens from each class were chosen for the citizenship honor roll. They are, left to right, sopho mores Gail Pfaff and Jay Barnes; seniors Sherry Kellett and Mike Lawrence; and juniors Candy Bernard and Irving Peace. Recipients of the citizenship hon or roll awards for the first six weeks have been announced by Miles Brown, Junior Class presi dent. Representing the Senior Class are Sherry Kellett and Mike Law rence; juniors are Candy Bernard and Irvin Pearce; and sophomores, Gail Pfaff and Jay Barnes. Sherry is a member of Torch light, president of JCL, first vice president of Civinettes, a Senior Class superlative, vice president of the Senior Class, D.A.R. Good Citi zen, a National Merit semi-finalist, and makes Special Honor Roll. She has received the Citizenship Award in her sophomore and junior years also. Mike is also a superlative, presi dent of Junior Jaycee’s, homeroom (president, and a member of His tory Honor Society. He, too, has been a Citizenship Honor Roll win ner previously. Candy Bernard, a junior marshal and a member of Civinettes, also serves on the Student Council. Irving Pearce is a member of the track team. Sophomore Gail Pfaff is a cheer leader, member of Civinettes, and serves on Student Council. She is an honor roll student also. Jay Barnes is vice president of the Sophomore Class. He served as vice president of the Student Body at Kiser Junior High School last year. He was a superlative at KJS, and made honor roll for the first term at GHS. The citizenship honor roll in cludes one boy and one girl from each class, and is elected once a; term by the faculty. Nominees are^ selected from each homeroom.
