Tickets were given to each per

and the proceeds go toward a
Torchlight scholarship to be given
to some deserving student at Sen
ior High.
Delegates were elected to attend
the state Naional Honor Society
convention April 27 and 28 in

tives from Senior.

GHS Band And Choir
Perforin In Assembly
Greensboro Senior High School’s
band and choir presented recently
a joint assembly to the student
body.
The band opened the program
with “The Hut of Baba Yaga” and
“The Great Gate of Kiev,” selec
tions from the Composition “Pic
tures at an Exhibition.”
The choir then joined the band
for several selections. First, they
played “Allelulia” by Martin
Mailman. This was followed by
the “Allelulia” by Mr. John
Barnes Chance, resident composer
for the Ford Foundation.
They closed the program with
“Tuerandot” by Puccini and ar
ranged by Mr. Herbert Hazelman.
Solos for the parts of Ping, Pang,
and Pong were sung by Ray Ku-
tos, Spencer Sullivan, and Rich
ard Sain.

the Civinettes, and Torchlight.
She is an honor roll student, too.
Susie Newly, as literary editor,
is starting her second year on the
WHIRLIGIG staff.
Actual planning of the book for
next year has already begun. A
dummy is drawn for each page
showing that pictures will be used,
what size and shape must be
taken, how much copy to be writ
ten, and where the various pages
will be located.

May Day, Awards Day, and other
commencements events, including
the Senior Tea and the Prom are
taken for next year’s WHIRLI
GIG. The business manager starts
collecting ads and sponsorships in
the spring.
1962 Yearbook Arrival
Dale Stansbury, 1961-1962 edi
tor, expects the yearbook some
time in early May, judging by
most other years. The staff is
never given an exact date to ex
pect delivery and is notified only
a few days beforehand.
Ray Kutos, John Meeks and
David Hamilton, and Jo Thompson
were presented prizes by Jim
Freedman, moderator of the Torch
light Variety Show last Tuesday.
Ray, accompanied by Barbara
Alley, received first place prize
of $10 for his song “Unchained
Melody.” John Meeks and David
Hamilton, playing a drum duet
called “The Battle of the Drums,”
won second prize of $5. Honor
able mention went to Jo Thomp
son for her acrobatic dance.
Cheryl Hopkins sang “Romance”,
a vocal solo from the “Desert
Song”. She was accompanied by
Susan Monroe. Monnette Weaver
played Franz Liszt’s piano solo
“Etude in D-flat Major,” while
Dick Tontz followed with a mono
logue. Arthur Eisenband, prompt
ed by David Hamilton on the
drums, gave a piano solo.
Then a new student at GHS,
Carole Blackmon sang “Everybody
Loves a Lover” accompanied by
Barbara Alley. Sandra Martinez
clacked her castinets to the Span
ish tune of “La Jota”, Sherry
Bundy followed with a monologue,
“The Little Outcast’s Plea”. A
violin solo, “Praeludium and Al
legro” by Pugnani-Kreisler, was
given by Dan Richman with Mrs.
Trexler at the piano. Since Dan
is a Torchlight member, he could
not compete for a prize.
While the judges consulted, the
“Crescendos” and the “Fellows”
I entertained the audience. Mem
bers of the “Crescendos” are Betti
McNairy, Janey Walters, Lea Jane
Coble, Scottie Kellam, Barbara Al
ley, and Joan Baber while Steve
Davis, Bones O’Briant, BUI Hud
son, Dan Howe, Jerry Clark, and
Dave Edwards make up the “Fel
lows”.

Trip Through North
Mike Andrew, junior, and Betty
Jo Pearce, sophomore, recently
won a two-week all-expense paid
trip to New York and New Eng
land in July.
Mike and Betty Jo defeated six
contestants from Page, Senior, and
one from Curry School, and three
other students from Senior High
in a speech contest sponsored by
the Greensboro Order of Odd Fel
lows. The choice of topics was
“What the U.N. Means to Me” or
“My Community and World Af
fairs”.
Alternates for the contest were
Jim Bell, sophomore, at Senior
High and Sherry Bundy, junior.
Also participating in the contest
I was Kelly Hunter, junior.
