Page Eight High Life February 28, 1964 Sub-Juniors Help In Woman’s Club Event Members of the Sub-Junior Woman’s Club, a Service club here at Grimsley, served refreshments and were models for the fashion show and bridge party sponsored by the Greens boro Junior Woman’s Club. This annual event took place Thurs day night, February 27 at the Oriental Shrine Club. AH pro ceeds went to a scholarship fund for special education teach ers also sponsored by the Junior Woman’s Club. Sub-Juniors who were mod els were Aleen Easterling, Shelia Knedlik, Susan Thorpe, and Lynne Wentworth. Aleen and Lynne were dressed for Sun day, while Shelia and Susan went casual wearing two-piece swim suits. Members of the Junior Wom an’s Club and their children were also models. The fashions were provided by Ellis Stone. Formed From Woman’s Club The Sub-Juniors helped their sponsoring club as a special court esy. The Junior Woman’s Club of fered to sponsor a girl’s service club just over a year ago. As a result the Sub-Junior Woman’s Club was formed. Since its forma tion the Sub-Junior Club has serv ed Grimsley and community in various means. Presently the Sub- Juniors have one of the planter boxes in the grove and are sup porting the other projects of the School Beautiful Committee. Brennan And Crasser Win Cold Keys John Brennan and Dottie Cras ser, art students at GHS, won Gold Keys in the Scholastic Art Awards contest here recently. A Gold Key is the highest award given by the association. Art work from all over North Carolina was entered in the con test, sponsored by WFMY-TV. The works were divided according to grade grouping, and media; and then part was sent to WFMY studios, and the other half was judged at Weatherspoon Gallery of UNC-G. John’s picture, done in ink me dia, was one of the scene of a riot. It depicted, from an overhead view, a city with many skyscrapers. In the picture stood a gigantic man in white robe and long flowing beard, looking down on a riotous mob of people, carrying signs, and fighting. Also depicted were two burning cars. The picture was originally entitled “The Gulliver of the Modem World,” but later changed to its present title, “The Spirit of the Riot.” John spent nine hours on fram ing, matting, and filling out appli cation blanks. He sent in eleven pictures all total, three in ink media. The winning picture took him about a week to finish. Along with the Gold Key, John also received a special presenta tion from Weatherspoon Gallery; Dorothy Key demonstrates her selling ability to DE group DE Students Compete For Convention Rights Services to the community have included, among others, various charity drives and projects for the children at Caswell-Murdock, for the 60-Plus Club, the Ship Hope, and local hospitals and service organizations. a book entitled “The History of Art,” valued at approximately $25. From here the picture will trav el to a New York showing. If it wins there, John will receive a cash prize of $25, and wave good bye to his picture, for it will then go to Enrope for exhibition. The Distributive Education class es of District No. 6 will convene at Grimsley Senior High on Wed nesday, February 26th. Members from GHS, Ragsdale, Southeast, Northeast, Reynolds, Burlington, and Page will compete in contests for the privilege of attending the State Convention to be held in Raleigh, March 19th. Four Types of Contests There are four types of contests a member may enter: “Student of the Year,” “Sales Demonstration,” “Advertising Layout,” and “Speech Contest.” The students participat ing in the contests from GHS are: Ronnie Dawson, Dorothy Key, Larry Wren, and Jerry Carpenter. The “Student of the Year” con test, in which Ronnie Dawson is taking part, consists of presenting one’s life history to a Screening Committee of judges. After a stu dent has been discussed, he is put through a rigorous interview, in which he is asked all sorts of ques tions. The best is chosen and will represent the District in the State Convention. The “Sales Demonstration” con test in which Dorothy Key is par ticipating, consists of showing the proper procedures of a sale, such as use of the cash register, writing sales slips, and repeating to one self — “The customer is always right.” “Ad Layout” Contest Larry Wren will represent GHS in the “Ad Layout” contest. This contest requires a lot of artistic skill and planning, in which the student is to compose an adver tisement from materials supplied by the school. The “Speech Contest,” in which Jerry Carpenter is participating, of course speaks for itself. The district winners of these contests will then travel to Raleigh for the State Convention. On Thursday, March 19th, the night of their arrival, there will be a Hootenanny, and everyone will get acquainted. Banquet To Be Held Friday, the contestants from all districts will compete in the State contests with hopes of traveling to Chicago for the National Con vention.
