Twenty-six girls from the Senior Class, nominated by members of the Whirlie football team on the basis of their exhibition of school spirit, will compete for the title of Home coming Queen. Ballots will be distributed in homerooms on October 29 to allow the student body to exer cise their choice in this event. The sesults will not be known until the crowning during the halftime of the football game. ' Twenty-Two Students Get National Merit Recognition Grimsley is proud of receiving the results of the National Merit Scholarships Qualifying Test taken by some of its stu dents last spring. The reason is that Grimsley is unusally rep resented in the large number qualifying. Last spring, 17,100 high schools had students taking the tests. Only 38,000 received Letters of Commendation. These commended students show unusual promise and have their names sent to their first and second choice of colleges. Also installed were Steve Des- per, Vice President; Connie Giles, Secretary; and Craig Sousa, Treas urer. Eight newly elected sophomore student council representatives and eight youth council represent atives also took office Tuesday. The new members of the student council are: Mary Amend, Jim Blackwood, Ginger Cory, Carol Crocker, Bryant Holsenbeck. Su san Odenwald, Lynn Rose, and Angie Thompson. The sophomore youth council representatives are: Kit Abbitt Jeanne Bennett, Nancy Duncan, Sally English, Kathy Howell, Jane Murray, Jean Thornley, and Jean Weeks. The president also said that new sophomore projects are still being considered. Semi-finalists, the high est scoring students have their names sent to all colleges and universities in the United States Grimsley semi-finalists are: Robert Pallingnight, Ken Bell, Steve Cor- dle, Francis Ferguson, David Grimes, Larry House, Richard Levy, Joe Montgomery, Anthony Morgan, David Pultz, and Robert Skenes. Semi-finalists will take a second test later this year and those with the highest scores will be consid ered finalists. Notice of finalists comes in February when certifi cates of Merit will be presented. From the Finalists, all Merit Scholars will be chosen. Only 10% to 15% of Finalists become Merit Scholars, Semi-finalists equal less than 2/3 of 1% of the graduating sen ior population. Semi-finalists and Commended students together con stitute less than 2% of all high school seniors, thus representing a distinguished group.
