^hirlie Boosters Promote
Strong Adult School Spirit
The Whirlie Booster Club was organized seven years ago
by a conscientious group of men and women, many of whom
were alumni of Greensboro Senior High School, who were
interested in aU phases of Whirlie athletics.
The primary purposes of the
Whirlie Boosters are to help stim
ulate school spirit, to support and
encourage Grimsley’s excellent
coaching staff, and to recognize
the achievements of young Whir
lie athletes. The club recognizes
them by entertaining the athletes
at seasonal banquets and through
the presentation of appropriate
plaques and trophies to outstand
ing Whirlies.
The Whirlie Boosters meet on
Monday nights in the gym where
they review the previous Friday
night game by means of films and
discussions.
The club is composed of promi
nent Greensboro citizens, mothers
and fathers of Whirlie athletes,
coaches, and other interested
boosters. Most of the members
are alumni of Greensboro Senior
High School and many are alum
ni of Whirlie sports.
The Whirlie Boosters always
have as one of their highest ob
jectives the support of the ath
lete teams no matter where the
Whirlies may travel.
In supporting these Whirlie
teams they often remember the
Whirlies that they cheered on to
victory when they were students
at Greensboro Senior High School.
The interest stirred by these for
mer Whirlie teams has inspired
these men and women to help
support the present Whirlies.

that some doy they will know as
little as their fathers.

Cross Country
Suffered Defeat
tn Winston
The cross country team, unde
feated in High Life’s last article,
met defeat a month ago as an in
spired group of harriers from
Chapel Hill surprised the Whirlies
19-36.
Since then the Whirlies have
defeated Morehead by forfeit and
finished second place in the Pied
mont Sectionals held in Winston-
Salem two weeks ago. Reynolds
High was the winner as they
edged the Blue and White by a
small score.
A significant thing about the
Morehead (LeaksviHe, Spray, Dra
per) team was that upon arriving
on campus, they only showed up
with 3 runners. Since five are
necessary for a team a forfeit
had to be brought about.
Coach Bob Sawyer of the cross
cotmtry team has stated that this
team by far is the most experi
enced of all the teams he has
ever coached. One reason to back
up his statement is in Don Bell,
a senior. He ran the 3 mile
course in 11:13, 8 seconds short
of the course record. Other out
standing boys include: Don Finch,
Frank Hand, Paul Austin, Mike
Yegge, Mark Thompson, Wayne
Van Dyke, Ed Pfaff, Will Garvin,
David Sullivan, Chuck Osborne,
David Alden, Tom Long, and Cur
tis Weaver.
Saturday (October 31) the har
riers went to Wake Forest Col
lege for the Wake Forest invita
tional. This is strictly an invita
tional meet, but it can be classi
fied as being similar to the Sec
tionals.
November 7, the State Meet
will be held in Chapel Hill. The
Whirlies are all ready pointing
to this one, for they feel they
have a strong chance in overcom
ing the favored Black Demons of
Winston-Salem Reynolds.
The team wil adopt a new pol
icy this fall as Coach Sawyer is
requiring all the team members
to train during the winter, until
the coming track season. In this
way, the boys will be ready and
be a strong prospect for the com
ing track season.
The 1964 Whirlies completed
their football season with a gamd
with their cross-town rivals last
Friday. The Whirlies final record
for the ’64 season is 7-3. (pre

Whirtie Award
Every Week
Each week the Junior Jaycees
at Grimsley Senior High School
give an award to the Whirlie
player who has contributed the
best play in any phase of school-
supported athletic activities. This
is an attempt to recognize dif
ferent Grimsley stars whose plays
may have gone practically unnot
iced at the game.
Last week, this award was pre
sented to Lynnie Maynor, of
GHS’s Whirlie football team who
placed 4th in the Central 4-A.
The other Whirlie of the week
awards also went to members of
the Varsity football team. Quarter
back Larry Dempsey, Frankie
Leonard, Tommy Clay, Bobby
Rives, and several others have re
ceived this award during the fall
athletic season.

The 1964 Whirlie football season has now died. It leaves
a respectable 6-3 record (not including the Page versus Grims
ley game). The six wins included a very surprising roster.
Raleigh Broughton was the first to fall to the mighty Whirlies
by a score of 10-0. The next major victory was gained at Fay
etteville in the closest game of the season. Scoring in the last
minute of the game the Blue and White pigskin carriers re
turned to Greensboro with a 7-6 upset. This victory caused
special attention because it marked Fayetteville’s first non
conference defeat since 1961.
The Whirlie season also is forced to claim 3 bitter defeats.
Each one proved to, more fatal than the last. Early in a vic
torious season the Whirlies traveled to Burlington and wiar
the help of several calls and lack of time lost a thriller 6-0.
At High Point the Whirlies lost by one point resulting from
the failure on the part of Cotton Hartig’s kick. This was the
blow that removed the Whirlies pennant chances. The loss to
Reynolds despite a good performance by the wfiirlies was
anti-climatic.
Despite the three Whirlie losses the Blue and White’s 1964
season held some thrillers and a few sweet victories that will
off-set the defeats.
Winston-Salem Reynolds will represent the Central 4-A Con
ference in the State 4-A play offs because of its regular sea
son 32-12 win over Burlington. The Demons from Winston
will travel to Rocky Mount to play the Blackbirds in the first
round of playoffs.
Elsewhere in the 4-A around the state Durham will represent
the second place team in the Eastern 4-A roster and they are
slated to meet Gastonia in the first round of play offs.
