Page, at one time, had been in contention for one of those places, but Salisbury, Burlington, and the Whirlies strangled these hopes. In Centi;al 4-A play, some strange upsets resulted. High Point’s defeat of SalisWy, Salis bury’s defeat of Burlington, and Winston-Salem Gray’s de feat of Page. It was a close race at which the first, four all teams having their good and had nights. Burlington’s once-mighty Bullpups were no match for a hungry, but talented band of Whir lies, Juesday night February 16, as the Blue and White walloped the Dogs by an 82-57 score. It was sweet revenge for the Whirlies, who earlier in the year were upset by the same Bur lington team, 56-48. The Whirlie victory margin could have been worse, but subs finished out the last four minutes, and surprisingly held their own against the outclassed Williams five. Big Larry Dempsey led the , , ,, . , also spark the winners. High rated Mike Spann led Burlington with 15 points, with most of them Whirlie scoring as he swished in 26 big points. Bob Albright tallied 14 and Max Wilson hit for 11 to The State Tournament will combine a group of eight teams each with enough potential to come out as a winner. Upsets may be the rememihebring factor of the 1965 chapter of the play-offs. book. As the basketball season draws to a close the Whirlie athletic coaches look toward the baseball season. The Whirlie bat and ball enthusiasts will have a new coach this season. Dave Murr, who will replace coach McCall. Last year the Whir lies took the Central 4-A crown away from red Pirates frota Page and went on to win the State 4-A championship with a defeat of Wilmington. Baseballers David James, Larry Demp sey, Tommy Holyfield, Don Hartig, Delane Hooks, and Don Dunn are some of the many who will wear blue and white caps this spring. In the past the attendance to the games has been miserable. This should be one tradition to be altered. Page is rough when they dig their spikes into the dirt diamond. Winston Salem Gray and High Point have also been knovm to be strong competers. Also on behalf of the “High Life” staff and the Grimsley Student body, we would like to wish the WhirUes the best of luck in the 4-A Stae Play-offs. Whirlie Swimmers Defeat ers Park 57-38 My( The Grimsley swimming team reached another mile-stone as they swam past Myers Park High School 57-38, snapping the Seahorses 64 dual meet win streak, which has taken place over a span of several years. Earlier during the season, the Charlotte'tankers fell to the Whir lies in a hotly-contested match, 78-75 in the East Carolina Invi tational. However, more than two teams were competing, so their streak was still intact. the freestyle relay, composed of Dewey, Quinn, Bernard, and Lind- ley. Bill Dewey, Dave Quinn, Alan Bernard, and Wayne Smith starred in individual competition. The freestyle relay also gathered in a first place in record time. Gray of Winston-Salem was the next to become victim, as the Hounds were drowned 78-16. The Winston-Salem team also proved to be no match, with their drivers only accomplishing anything of outstanding value. In another meet, hapless Page fell $4-11. Page failed to obtain a single first place in the rout. Record breakers for the Whirlies included the medley relay (Bur nett, Smith, Craven, and Finn) with a time of 1:23.6, George Robinson in the 60 freestyle, and In a non-conference match, the powerful UNC freshmen defeated the Whirlie^ in a 56-38 score. Also, in the Southern Interschol^tic Swimming Championship at Chap el Hill, Saturday, February 20, the local tankers finished a re spectable fourth with 21^ points. Fork Union, a military giant, emerged victorious with 41 points. PILOT LIFE—A GOOD COMPANY TO WORK FOR — A GOOD COM PANY TO BE INSUR ED WITH Pilot Life Insurance Co. See the Gate City Paint Co. This time, they even tried to harmonize to the “Stars Spangled Banner.” Any group with such little talent and such lack of respect certainly should stay home! They even held up a “Pound Pomona” sign, but who is Pomona? With the win, the Whirlies vault ed into a first place tie with the same Bulldogs. However, after Tuesday’s performance, there is little doubt as to who is Number One. A play-off for first place is likely to occur, with the site prob ably being the Greensboro Coli seum. If a play-off does develop, it will mark the second straight year for such. Last year, the Whirlies deadlocked with High Point’s Black Bison and forced a play-off. The Whirlies won and also went on to defeat Reynolds for the State Championship. Speaking of High Point, the Big Blue traveled to the Furniture City last Friday night to do battle with the lowly, but sometimes sur prising Bisons. After a close first half, which saw the Whirlies be hind most of the period, the Blue and White caught fire and went on to take a 55-43 victory. Larry Dempsey again led all Whirlie scorers with 17 points. This win marked the eleventh conference win against two losses. It is ex pected that the Whirlies will again defeat High Point in the confer ence finale for a 12-2 mark and 16-3 overall — the best regular season record since 1958 when the team won 17 out of 20 before the post season play began. State Tournament time is again around the corner. The Whirlies, along with Rusty Clark and his Fayetteville Bulldogs, loom as top threats to the crown. Myers Park and Durham rang high, and Salis bury must not be counted out. In the East and Western Conferences, tournaments determine the teams that advance, but it looks as if the Greensboro team’s first rO'Und opponent will be Charlotte’s East Mecklenberg High School. The Eagles have proven to be tough, as they muzzled the high-flying Durham Bulldogs early during the year. Also, it was the Durham team who handed the Fayetteville crew its only loss to date.
