Whirlies End Season
In 3rd Place In 4-A
For Grimsley’s Whirlies the ’64-’65 regular basketball sea
son was completely successful. With the return of two of last
year’s team, critics predicted that the Central 4-A would be
easy blue and white prey. However, it was not quite as easy
as predictions had claimed.
Suffering a bitter loss at the
hand of Burlington’s Bulldogs in
a bright season that was begin
ning to dim the five began to
find the basket again and after
concentrated effort they acquired
the needed to control the re
bounds Experience v/as definitely
one of the Whirlies greatest as
sets and Coach Bob Jamieson put
it successful! to work for him.
The high light of the season
occurred on the Tuesday night
the Bulldogs of Burlington de
cided it was time to travel deep
into Whirlie territory looking for
their second win off the Blue and
White and virtually the number
1 berth in the Central 4-A Con
ference. The Whirlies had other
ideas as to how the game should
go and after proving their super
iority sent the Bulldogs back to
Burlington defeated.
With this feather in their cap
they quelled the smoldering High
Point and stomped their cross
town rivals.
The Whirlies only lost twice
this season in actual conference
play. Both Salisbury and Burling
ton handed the Whirlies defeats
early in the season. The Whirlies
came back strong and handed
these two giant killers losses
when they met again.
Then in the State 4-A the Whir
lies defeated Rocky Mount 5Z-iZ
for a third place standing in the
state conference. The Whirlies
were victims of height in contest
with Fayetteville Friday night..
Despite the lo^ the Whirlie
made a fine showing in the tour
nament and in regular season play.

There are five. They made a fine team. They shot well and
they tried hard. Ben McMakin, Skipper Garner, John Mc-
Nairy, Bob Albright, and Larry Dempsey did a fine job in rep
resenting Grjmsley in the State 4-A tournament. The deciding
factor of ths year’s tournament was height as in Rusty Clark.
Standing six feet eleven, Clark just stood there and dropped
the ball in the basket. Again, and again and again . . .
This basketball season has meant a lot to Grimsley’s stu
dent body. It marked the beginning of the accepance of a
name, long ignored. It saw a maturing group of young adults
demonstrate good sportsmanship and overwhelming school
spirit. It prodded a president to take interest in a problem
that was destined to become worse and solve it. It produced
a team whose character and hustle will long be remembered.
In short, it left an imprint in the sound Grimsley tradition
that can never be defaced.
The swimmers from GHS defeated Myers Park, Reynolds,
and others to bring home the first State 4-A Conference
swimming title since 1957.
The 1965 Baseball team can be seen practicing behind the
boys gym after school. There is a state title to be defended
this year and a group of well experienced boys to do it.
It was good to see the faculty taking part in the twirp day
activities. I’d say they made a pretty fine showing.
This season had its ups and downs spiced with unbelievable
upsets like Page’s defeat of Burlington. The Whirlies gave
Grimsley fans a lot to cheer about. They played as a team. They
played extremely well. There are five. Actually there are thir
teen. Some saw more action than others. Still, on the court
there are only five.
Pep Board Leads
GHS In Boasting
School Spirit
In an amendment to GHS’s
constitution two years ago the
Pep Board was recognized as a
student council supported orga
nization with its chairman elected
by the student, body. To the Pep
Board and Buddy Powell was
given the job of promoting a de-
criped school spirit.
If these conscientious members
of the Pep Board had looked for
a life tim^ it is possible that
they could not have found a hard
er task. They met before school
started to be ready with a good
campaign for the first game. The
idea was an old one—“Come out
and support the Whirlies,” but it
was presented to the student body
with new born enthusiasm. They
made posters to be plastered on
the walls outside on the buildings
around school. Announcements
over the public address system
constantly reminded GHS’ers of
the up coming game while the
members of the board circulated
among the crowds talking up the
game.
The Pep Board meets on Mon
day afternoons to plan and carry
out plans such projects as mak
ing shakers for the cheerleaders
and making posters to promote
student attendance to the games.
Skits such as the ones in assem
bly on Tuesday’s are worked up
and carried out by the members.
At the games they set a good
example of true school spirit and
good sportsmanship.
The sceptics at .GHS tend to
laugh and ask what good is the
Pep Board doing, school spirit
appears the same. An organiza
tion with this function can only
be as effective as the students
are willing to let it be. The mem
bers of the Board can only do
so much and the rest is up to
the students. The Pep Board asks
for the support and suggestions
of each and every member of
GHS’s student body. Patience and
understanding is also needed by
the Board members because this
is a relatively new organization
at GHS and in order to see its
benefits it must be given time to
exhibit what it can do.

the increasing number of college
