Page Four High Life March 29, 1965 SPORTS SECTION MARCH 29> 1965 Whirlies Launch *65 Season The 1965 Grhnsley Whirlies opened their new baseball sea son on March 23 against Salisbury in Greensboro. The Whir lies have their entire infield returning except for a new third baseman. Whirlie Larry Dempsey Named To All-State Conference Team Center Larry Dempsey of the 1964-1965 Whirlie Central 4-A conference Champions was named to the North Carolina all state basketball team after his fine performance on the bas ketball court this season. string for the second year Ben set up many a fine play. He was able to steal the ball and dribble circles around his op ponents. John McNairy was the fifth member of the team. Just a junior, John will see much ac tion next year. Captain Larry Dempsey will David James and Don Dunn are old veterans at first and second base respectively and they have as much ability with the bat as they demonstrate on the field. Delane Hooks will continue at shortstop where he has plenty of chances to demonstrate his ability with the glove. The Whirlies won the state 4-A Conference Championship from Wilmington on a no hitter by Alex Cheek. The departure of Mr. Cheek to State at Raleigh has left the Whirlies with a def inite pitching problem. Max Wil son, who has been pitching since grammar school, is one hopeful answer to the Blue and White moxmd question. Not only does he show good control on the mound, but also he’s terrifically fast on the bases. Cotton Hartig is another pitcher on hand for the Whirlies. Cotton has a lot of power both with the bat and the ball and he can fire the ball. If he can gain Cheek’s con trol, the Whirlies will be in busi ness. Robert Lucas is a relatively new member of the Senior ball and batters. He has nice pitching form and seems to have few con trol problems. The first few games will tell the tale. The outfield has three new players to roam bounds. Larry Dempsey, a reserve on last year’s team will play left field. Either the unactive pitchers or a sopho more Dean Brew^ will play right field. In center field Mike Jacobs who played Javvees last year wffl round out the outfield. The new outfield has a lot of potential with the bat. Larry Dempsey sent balls out of the park with no trouble last year. Should Cotton Hartig play right field when he’s not pitching that would put another unpredictable batter at the plate. Another new varsity member up from Jayvees is third base- man Beaver Peer. Last year, Bur gess and Hudson, and James were THE BOAR AHD CASTLE Greensboro’s Most Popular Sandwich Shop Spacious Parking Ground West Market Street Ext. PILOT LIFE—A GOOD COMPANY TO WORK FOR — A GOOD COM PANY TO BE INSUR ED WITH Pilot Life Insurance Co. Champions. It is hoped that Peer will take Burgess’ place in that category. To round out the 1965 start ing nine will be either Kirk Grumpier or veteran Mike Lock- lar as catcher. Both represent threats at the plate and a steady glove behind the plate. The Whirlies have another new comer to their ranks. Mr. Dave Murr has taken over Coach Mc Call’s duties as Coach of the Whirlie baseball team. Coach McCall lead the Whirlies to five conference titles in the past six years. The 196 title went to Page in a 2-1 pitchers duel in which Wayne Nunn handed Alex Cheek his second defeat of that season. Cheek however returned the title to the Whirlie Gym with a 5-4 defeat of the Pirates and Nunn last year. The Whirlie baseballers have their work cut out for them, but they have the players to bring the title home again. They play a fine game of ball! The Senior stands six-feet five inches tall and was the spear head of the Whirlies 1965 Con ference drive. He was the number one scorer and rebounder for the Blue and White and probably the best eager in the conference. Also named to the team was Pete Maifavich from Raleigh Broughton who Whirlie fans saw fall victim to Grimsley’s powers and Rusty Clark, Fayetteville Bulldogs six foot 11 phenomenon who averages twenty some points a game. Both Larry Dempsey and Rusty Clark played first string state conference basketball last year. Clark fouled out with five min utes left in the game after giving Grimsleys Whirlies thteir only tournament challenge. Dempsey was not the only Whirlie who deserved recognition for a fine 19-4 season record. All thirteen members of the Whirlie squad and coaches Jamie son, McCall and Morton were the ingredients that pjtodi^ed the fast paced, fine shooting team. Skipper Garner was a pleasant surprise for Whirlie fans this season. He and Bob Albright were both new to the Whirlie varsity team and played fine ball. Bob Albright was one of the best shooters in the con ference and had a good shot from outside. Ben McMakin was the anchor man for the team. Playing first attend Duke University next year. He was the first string quarterback his junior and senior year for the Whirlie football team, first string center on the basketball team for two years and starting left fielder in Whirl- ies current baseball team—a fine star in a Whirlie tradition.
