Page Two High Life October 25, 195' Boot Girls Will Be Welcome At Coming Half-Time Shows One-two-three-four. One - two - three-four. That is the rhythm that the new boot girls at Grimsley may be marching to at future athletic events. With Greensboro sandwiched between two cities that already sport the dancing girls, it seems as if it has taken GHS a long time to get the hint and join other schools in maintaining a well dis ciplined drill team. Members of the 0. Henry Juniors Service Club have initiated the proj ect this year. In the first issue of HIGH LIFE a year ago, such a pro posal was made. Two girls who vol unteered to choreograph the dances were found, but response from the student body was low. Perhaps the student were not ready to add a new feature to the traditional half-time shows at football games, but the boot girls of the future will be a welcome addition. Not only would the dancing girls brighten up the mid-game festivities, but they will enable more people to participate in one high schools most popular enter- ? ? P ? By Babs Jones I had some requests to ask a dif ferent kind of question this week, and since I try to please (well, I sorta try). I’m going to ask it— What do boys think of the London look? I found that some boys are ex perts on apparel and others have no idea of what the London look is. As a brief explanation of the London look as I see it and for those who don’t know ... it con sists of the empire waist-line dres- es, wild patterns and colors togeth er, boots, long, straight hair, long bangs, heavy eye make-up, no lip stick, and so on. The type of looks you see on Shindig and Hullabaloo. Since the male attitude is gen erally the same at all ages, I see no reason for giving classes or ages. First I asked about hair styles and received the most decided vote —against perfectly straight hair: “I like long hair, but straight hair does nothing for any girl. If you don’t believe me take a look at my kid sister.” “About shoulder length and sorta turned up at the ends looks good.” “Bangs are fine, but I wanna see the girl’s eyes once in a while!” Woe to some of us girls! As to the dresses: “Purple and yellow?” “Well, I think ...” CENSORED (What some boys DO think!) “When a girl wears what you call the London Look, she shows off the dress; but when she wears good old American skirts and sweaters, they show off the girl.” About the make-up: “Who died?” “Did color go out of style?” “Tough enough!” About boots: “The greatest!” “Clumsy” “Yea ...” “The high kind are some kind of different! The short white ones aren’t bad either.” All I can say is I feel sorry for the girls with straight hair and long bangs, wearing purple and yellow dresses, green lipstick and not wearing boots! tainments, and they would allow more people to participate in a school wide activity. Naturally, the Grimsley answer to the Williams and Reynolds girls will carry their own distinct ive mark that will set them well apart from the rivals. Even a variation in the name—Dancing Boots for Reynolds and Boot Girls for Williams—will help to mark the distinction. The b. Henry Juniors are to be commended for initiating this group. Innovations at GHS are al ways welcome, especially when they can effectively improve upon existing conditions. The success of this opportunity depends upon the participation of each student. We’re Still Number One Even though there wasn’t an ath letic victory for GHS on the 300 foot playing field where the Grims- ey and Page football teams met, our student body swept the honors in displaying good sportsmanship. The prevailing mood of the Whir- lie viewers was one of the fierce devotion that helped to keep the stadium resounding with familiar cheers. Whenever the going became a little rough for the football team, the assembled students reminded their uniformed representatives that they wholeheartedly support ed them. Yet, the 13-12 victory that Page received is just another memory for the Pirates to tuck away in their scrapbooks. The red friends try to forget that GHS is the number one school in the city. Our superiority is well borne out of the number of Merit Scholarship semi-finalists that Grimsley had. From the 26 semi-finalists in Guilford County, GHS was the home of 16. Where were the Pirates when these honors mere being distrib uted? Perhaps their genius is used to manufacture cafeteria jam-ins and other bright ideas. The Whirlies have learned to show their respect for their school by conducting themselves in a man ner that would distinguish their beloved alma mater. The boufant school spirit that is beginning to capture Grimsley students is an ex- celent example of the pride that is associated with GHS. Expression of school spirit is de termined by the possessors of it, but the sumber one school appears as if it is leading the others in this expression. Whenever hundreds of students confront each other with a rivalry that is similar to the one that Page and Grimsley, the explosive tem pers are ready to be ignited. A compliment for each of the partici pants seems to be at hand for a job well done by the cheering students. Whirlies you have defeated the Pirates many times, but the ulti mate in bictory is the fact that Grimsley remains number one by virtue of maintaining the dignity and stature that is required of a leading school. Good sportsmanship in athletic games as well as in aca demic areas is one of the best ways to keep GHS number one in the south. Help! HIGH LIFE has issued this call to the Grimsley student body on several previous occasions. The result of the significant plea was that the four-page weeky paper now being published, will on No vember 1 become a sometimes six page paper. The assistance that the staff now requests is the contribution of stu dent work for publication. One of the two new pages will provide an outlet for creative writing, which includes poetry, science and history papers, and pictures of art work. Alternating with the student page wiU be a page devoted to reviews of concerts, art, plays ,and books. In an effort to prevent this ma terial from becoming stilted, inter views with touring celebrities will occasionaly be featured. Comments on restaurant openings that might be of interest to the student body will add to the variety of this page. While the student and preview pages will alternate with one anoth er, the second page being added will be used for either sports or feature stories. The staffs for the new areas be ing covered will be from the first year journalism class. They will assemble the stories and assume the responsibility of choosing work of superior quality for publication. Patty Lauten, editor of the Re view Page, and Marhyle Upchurch, editor the Student Page, will head the effort to organize the innova tions and bring better reading to the student body. Only the best of the work sub mitted by the faculty and the stu dent will be used, although the must be a limit of 300 words each story because of a lack space. LETTERS TO THE EDITO Dear Editor, Having been to all of the footb games this season, there are seve facts that I have established i garding the actual playing a school spirit which I would like share with the student body. Th are the following: Happiness is going to a game, 1 more happiness is paying attenti to it. Happiness is being a member GHS, but more happinss is bei an active member of GHS. Happiness is loving your tea but more happiness is proving it. Happiness is not giving up, I more happiness is never giving i Happiness is completing a touc down pass, but more happiness knowing that you’ve done it for 1 teami, not for yourself. Happiness is hustling while ah( but more happiness is hustling wh behind. Happiness is being a cheeread but more happiness is really che Happmess is screaming, but m- happines is yelling the right wo at the right time. Happiness is winning, but m happiness is winning in the ri way. Happiness and more happir are not bought; they are made Connie Giles
