It made a win over Reynolds almost a must, if the big blue was to make the post-season games. The Whirlies obviously missed Jim Mitchell and John Perry in the Smith contests, especially on defense. In both games in which Perry did not play, High Point and Smith, the opposition had fine nights offensively. Mitchell’s presence could have made a big difference in the ballgame. Although Rick Pipan and Eddie Harrison played well in reserve roles, the Whirls had no one who could keep up with Mike Porter. Once Porter got a step on the defense, he was literally “home free.” It is quite conceivable that if Mitchell had been healthy, he could have caught the elusive tailback on a couple of his long runs. While the Golden Eagles were knocking off GHS, Salisbury was tying Reynolds 13-13 In the big game in the East, Durham defeated Raleigh Broughton 20-7. West Mecklenburg surprised Charlptte Garinger 13-7 in the Southwestern Conference. Since the state rules prohibit a school from playing more than 12 games in a season, once again there will be two state co-champs. Here is the schedule for the Central 4A’s com peting teams. Central’s No. 3 Team Vs Durham Central’s No. 1 Team Vs. Broughton Central’s No. 2 Team Vs. Garinger The winners of the first two games will meet for a share of the state crown, while the victor in the third will battle either the Southwest’s No. 2 team or Asheville. try this thrifty combination! 100% Pure Beef Cheeseburge* 12 oz. Mike Porter, running over, under, around, and through Grimsley defenders, scored five touchdowns to lead Smith’s Golden Eagles to a stunning 48-32 upset victory over the Grims ley Whirlies, November 4. / Seemingly running at will against the big blue, the junior tailback gained over 200 yards. Don Crews also ran for big yardage, as the Eagles amassed over 400 yards on the ground. It was undoubtedly the worst defensive performance the Whirlies have staged in many years. The 48 points were the most that had ever been scored on a Bob Jamieson team. The Smith total could have been larger had it not been for several saving tackles by Rusty Cul- breth. Smith did not take long get ting on the scoreboard. Starting from their own 40 after the open ing kickoff, the Eagles moved to the Grimsley 44. From there, ' Porter broke loose for the re maining yardage and a 6-0 Smith lead. The Whirls came right back with a TD. Jim Powell ran the kickoff to the Eagle 47. A 20 yard run by Culbreth and a per sonal foul against Smith were the key plays as Grimsley drove to the eight. Quarterback Mike Hipps then raced around left end for the score. Hipps’ PAT gave GHS its only lead of the night. It did not last too long. A 41 yard pass from Porter to Laymon Williamson and a 63 yard run by Crews were good for Eagle touchdowns midway in the first half. Morris Scores Grimsley struck again moments later, after Culbreth ran a punt 20 yards to the Smith 45. A lO" yard jaunt by Culbreth and a nine yard run by Steve Hathcock took the blue and white to the 17. Glenn Morris then scrambled up the middle for the six pointer on a tremendous piece of run ning. After Porter ran a kickoff 89 yards for a touchdown, GHS puiled to within seven at 27-20, by scoring late in the half. Hipps raced 17 yards and Culbreth sprinted 25 on big plays as the Whirlies drove from their own 24 On fourth down from the Eagle eight, Hipps threw to Cul breth for the touchdown and fired to the same halfback for the extra point Taking the second half kickoff, the Whirls moved 58 yards for a score. A 12 yard aerial from Hipps to Culbreth and a 22 yard toss from Hathcock to Dean Brewer on crucial third downs, helped take the big blue to the 11. Frem there Hipps picked his way through the Smith defense for a touchdown. Smith Scores However, Porter put the game out of reach by racing 37, 16, and 38 yards for scores. Grims ley picked up its final TD be tween the last two Smith tallies. Operating from a shotgun of fense, Hipps passed the Whirlies 93 yards to paydirt. The senior quarterback hit five of six on this drive, the last going 18 yards to Brewer. The speedy end faked a pitchout and streaked into the end zone for the TD. Williamson is detected grabbing the face mask, however. The penalty set up a Grimsley touch down, with Mike Hipps getting the TD. “FEATURING BEST MUSICAL BRAND NAMES” MOORE MUSIC CO. 615 W.
