BY RICK BREWER
The Grimsley football season came to a disappointing halt
with the 16-14 loss to Reynolds. The Whirlies were the pre
season favorites in the Central 4-A Conference, but defensive
lapses in the last two games forced the big blue to settle for
fourth place in the conference. GHS finished the season with
a 6-3-1 record, 4-2-1 in loop action.
Offensively, this was one of the finest Whirlie teams ever.
Greensboro amassed 231 point in 10 games to 166 for the
opposition. Mike Hipps, perhaps the greatest quarterback ever
to wear the blue and white, headed a backfield which had to
rank with the best in the state. Fullbacks John Perry and Glenn
Morris played fine football for the Whirls, as did halfbacks
Rusty Culbreth, Steve Hathcock, and Jim Mitchell.

The Reynolds game was the last for Hipps, Culbreth, Hath
cock ,and Perry. Other senior members of squad, who played
big roles in the Whirlies’ season, are: Lee Hinson, Dan Sharpe,
Dean Brewer, Dan Linker, Jim Coggins, George Zervos, and
Eddie Harrison.
Hipps was the top GHS scorer. He tallied seven touchdowns
and booted 17 extra points for 59 points. Culbreth and Mitchell
each picked up eight TDs and Culbreth also scored three PATs.
Brewer and Perry had four touchdowns apiece, while Morris,
Hathcock, Harrison, and Rick Pipan scored single TDs.
Hipps, who has to be the All-Conference quarterback, tossed
14 touchdown passes this season. He hit on better than 50 per
cent of his passes. His accuracy, of course, was helped by his
great receivers, Culbreth, Brewer, Mitchell, and Jerry Homig.
Whirlies End Season On Losing Note
Winston-Salem Reynolds clinched the Central 4-A Conference football championship, by de
feating the Grimsley Whirlies 16-14, November 11 .The loss, coupled with Salisbury and Smith
wins, eliminated the Whirls from the state plavoffs.
Coach Bob Jamieson’s forces had drawn first blood, scoring after taking the opening kick
off. Starting at their own 28, the big blue drove 72 yards in 13 plays for the score. Glenn Mor
ris, John Perry ,and Rusty Culbreth did all of the running, as the Whirhes moved to the
Reynolds 23.
Quarterback Mike Hipps then
passed 15 yards to Culbreth and
seven to Jerry Hornig. Culbreth
raced around left end from the
one fO'r the touchdown, with a
fine block by Hipps springing
him loose. Hipps booted the ex
tra point for a 7-0 lead.
Reynolds tied the game late in
the half. A 63 yard drive ended
with Demon quarterback Jimmy
Correll firing a seven yard scor
ing pass to Steve Vasgarrd. Tracy
Lounsbury kicked the PAT to
deadlock the game.
After Culbreth ran the ensuing
kickoff to his own 34, the blue
and white got going again. Hipps
threw 15 yards to Hornig and
tossed 25 to Culbrpth on big
plays, as GHS moved to the
Reynolds 18.
Drive Halted
i
Perry ran for a yard and Hipps
threw to Dean Brewer for eight
more. But Culbeth was stopped
for no gain and Jim Mitchell
lost two on a double-reverse, as
the Grimsley drive was halted.
Reynolds, taking the second
half kickoff, rolled to the GHS
22. The Grimsley defense stiffen
ed, however, and the Demons
settled for a field goal, a 32 yard
effort by Lounsbury.
The Whirlies did have some
bright spots defensively. Dan
Sharpe, Hipps, Hornig, Perry, and
Morris were in on several tackles.
The big blue contained tailback
Mike Cox, but could not stop
Stan Crews. Crews continually
ran for big yardage, setting up
the Reynolds scores.
Starting from their own 24,
after the Demon kickoff, the
Whirlies began to move again.
Passes of 21 and 24 yards to
Hornig were the big gainers, as
Hipps directed his team to the
Reynolds 24. The senior quarter
back fired 13 yards to Culbreth
at the 11. However, three incom
plete passes killed the threat.
Great Catch By Brewer
After a Demon punt, the blue
and white drove 83 yards to pay
dirt. The big play of this drive
was a 47 yard aerial to Brewer.
The Greensboro end tipped the
ball away from a defender and
raced to the visitors’ 23. Cul-
breth’s four yard dash, six plays
later, and Hipps’ PAT ended the
GHS scoring.
Reynolds then moved 64 yards
for the winning points. The big
play occurred on a third down
and nine from the Grimsley 15.
Correll was apparently trapped
deep behind the line of scrim
mage, but the elusive quarter
back got away and ran to the six.
Two plays later he scored on a
five yard run.
Hipps tried to rally his team
with 30 seconds to play. He
pitched 20 yards to Mitchell at
the Whirlie 44. But the Demons
threw Hipps for a nine yard loss
and three incomplete passes end
ed the season.

CULBRETH PICKS UP KEY YARDAGE
Whirlies’ Rusty Culbreth (23) races for a big gain against
Reynolds^ The halfback has just pulled in a pass from Mike
Hipps. Ken Hill (35) caught Culbreth at the Reynolds’ eight.
Two plays later, however, Culbreth scored from the one.
