Page Four HIGH LIFE Feb. 19, 196J Whirlies Show Great Spirit In Wrestling For G.H.S. On February eight the Grims- ley wrestling team climaxed an undefeated season by downing the Page team 23-22 on a final pin by Bebe Whitley in the unlimited division. The Whirlies opened their sea son on December 7, with a 35-16 victory over Burlington. One week later Winston-Salem Reynolds fell by 31-24 decision. The next victim was North Forsyth by the over whelming score of 44-9. On Jan uary 4 the Whirlie grapplers came up with a surprisingly easy 51^10 rout of cross-town rival Dudley. The next scheduled match was with High Point but was canceled. When it was made, up Grimsley won 33-20. Smith nearly spoiled the record on January 11 in dropping a 28- 27 thriller. The next week the Whirlies took on Burlington again and captured a 36-23 triumph. Dudley fell once again 46-11 be fore Page gained a 24-24 tie. The Whirlies defeated Reynolds again on January 30, 36-23. Grims ley won its last three matches by scores of 29-26, 36-16, and 23-22 over High Point, Smith, and Page successively. The top Whirlie performers in clude Richard Ferris with a rec ord of 11-0, Vic Cochran 13-0, including a school record pin in 10 seconds, Mike Booth 12-0-1, and Alvin Chandler 12-1. On February 16-17, the Whirlies took part in the sectional matches at Burlington in an effort to gain as many places as possible in the State championship at Reynolds, February 23-24. Grimsley took last year’s championship. In Vanstory's Young Men's Shop SPRING-TIME" In slacks In patteras and solids From 12.00 VANSTORY'S Smith Golden Eagles Are Downed The Whirlies tasted victory again on Monday, Feb. 5, with a 49-43 victory over Smith’s Golden Eagles. Despite the trouble that our basketball team has had, it seems that we have Smith’s num ber. The Whirlies fell behind early in the first quarter as Robert McAdoo, Smith’s stringbean cen ter, pumped in point after point over the Whirlie defense. McAdoo, at 6’8”, was at least four inches taller than any Whirlie, making it hard for the Whirlies to cope with him and easy for him to con trol the boards. Grimsley tied the games just before the quarter, then went ahead at the quarter by a score of 12-10. In the second quarter, McAdoo kept up his scoring, So Coach Jamieson sent in our own young giant, Lindsay Cook. Smith led at halftime 21-20, but Cook held Mc Adoo scoreless the last six min utes of the quarter. Cook’s outstanding play contin ued in the third quarter. Coach Jamieson kept alternating Cook, Broome, and Scott, thus giving the players a rest. This provided us with a fresher team in the fourth quarter. Grimsley outscor- ed Smith 13-11 in the third quar ter, and this gave the Whirlies a 33-32 lead. In the fourth quarter the big blue was simply outstanding. Mc Adoo was held in check and the Whirlies scored 16 points while Smith was held to 11. Layman Williamson got 10 of Smith’s 11 points in the final stanza. Foul shooting proved to be the key factor in the last period as the Pirates and Whirlies Meet In Exciting Basketball Match By Morty Morgenstern The return match between Page and Grimsley was played at the Coliseum on Wednesday night, February 7. Page had won the previous match by a mere two points and the Whirlies wanted revenge. Throughout the first half, both teams appeared over-anxious but was at times harmful to each. However, with just a couple of minutes remaining in the first half, Geoff King and Jackie Crutchfield led the Pirates to a 21-17 lead. This only caused the Whirlies to come right back with seven consecutive points for a 24- 21 lead at intermission. This was the last chance Grimsley had to cheer. Without warning the Whir lies 50 per cent field goal ac curacy disappeared and Pake took Whirlie JV "B" Team Completes End of Season The Grimsley J.V. “B” team com pleted its season on Thursday night, February 8, with a con vincing triumph over the North east High School J. V.’s. The win was the eighth of the season for the “rinkey dinks” as they faced only three defeats. Steve Warner hit on six straight free throws to put the game on ice.: Once again the Whiries got a balanced scoring attack. Scottl with 15, and Wilson and Warner; with 10 each paced the attack. Strange Words advantage. The Whirlies experienced a drought that saw them hit only two of 16 attempts from the floor in the second half. Page came back strong and immediately took the lead. Center Dickie Curran proved to be too much for Grims- ley’s front men, Keith' Broome, Dave Miller, and Mike Scott. The Whirlies were obviously hurt by the absence of tall Lindsay Cook, who was on the sidelines with a foot injury. Dickie Gordon also had a shot at stopping Curran, but he too, was unable to come up with the right solution. About the only bright spot in the 43-34 defeat was the play of guard Randy McMasters who played a fine game. Robbie Wil son played his usual fine floor game. ( whose fine scoring punch perhaps proved him to be rewarding of a spot on one of the two higher Grimsley teams. Other regulars included Tommy Appenzellar, Stacy Holden, Woody Edwards, Randy Poole, Leonard Suggs, and Richard Ferris. Coach Guin was at the reins of the team for the second straight campaign. Comrades in arms, it never fails. Each year the mighty stu-; dents in Blue contribute to thei state a champion in some formj This year is no exception. Two' WHIRLIE teams that have excel lent chances of becoming state: > champions are the swimming andi wrestling teams. Today, we will examine the more successful of: the two, the wrestling team. Under the able leadership of Coach George Robison, this group of boys has had great results! during the now completed regular season. Their overall won-losL tied record at the end of the sea-i son was a near perfect 12-0-1.: The tie came a few weeks ago with a 24-24 score with Page, However, as you know, in the re. turn match our Whirlies were victorious 23-22. Now let us look at the reason for this success. Four good rea-i sons are Ferris, Cochran, PowellJ and Whitley. All of these ended the season undefeated with onlyl Whitley allowing a tie. This past weekend the team participated iri the sectionals at Burlington so by now you know the results. Bets! are we came out on top. The STATE Meet will be held at Win-i ston Salem Parkland on Friday and Saturday nights the 23 andi 24. Asked to sum up the squad. Vic Cochran said the best adK jective was experience.
