Page Two HIGH LIFE -April 1, 19681 Get Ready Students For The Shorts Day Guys and gals dig out your old clothes, and save your energy, bring all your tools, and get ready to have the happiest and best school day of your life! What? Grimsley high school students are having a School Beautiful workday Friday, April 19, instead of the regular school day. Yes, classes will be dismissed and work will be concentrated on mak ing the GHS campus beautiful. haps make them classes more. appreciate their Prom To Be Discontinued ’Cause of Lack of Support Attendance will be kept, so none of that skipping off to the beach. This day will count as a regular' school day only it will be more fun. Homework for aU students will be to bring garden tools and be ready to work from 8:40 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Because of this workday Grims ley will be ready for the school beautiful judging. The grounds will once again appear tidy, free of paper and trash, and instead will be covered with bushes and flowers, the true signs of spring. Grimsley should be able to again capture the school beautiful trophy, miaking it the possesion of the school for five consecutive years. Usually one of the most important events of the school year for all students is the Prom. It is the talked about event, the time when girls in their long dresses and exotic hair styles and their handsome dates in their white, dinner jackets mingle with the socially elite. The Prom just adds a nice touch to the end of the long year. Evidently though, sophomores, juniors, and seniors do not see the Prom in this light at all! No one has been buying their tickets to the dancfei or even tried to support the traditional event in any way. Be cause of lack of interest the student council was forced to make a diffi cult decision. There will be no Prom for May, 1968. Letter To The Editor Dear Editor, I would like to comment on the article in last week’s paper concern ing the lengths of the skirts worn at school these days. I do agree with most of the state ments made, but don’t you think three inches above the knee is show-, ing a little too much? I’m sure the girls that you mentioned are really embarrassed. If they want to wear the short dresses, let them and I think it’s their own business about about what kind of undergarments they want to wear. Maybe it’s fash ionable to let the lace show. Pleate be more careful about what you write and who you write about! Thank you, I. 'When ticket sales failed and interest was not apparent, the coun cil became worried. Deciding that it could not afford to lose money on this event, the idea of a Prom was abandoned. Can you imagine how much work will be accoiuplished with 2,000 students working to clean up the campus? This question was considered by Mr. Lody Glenn, vice principal, as he was approached by Patti Harris, Gary McNeill and Lynn Moore, school beautiful chair man. With this workday and the goals that will be conquered, no one will ever know of the lack of partici pation of students. The.y won’t know that aU the work was done in one day. (No one would think it possi ble.) Last of all but most import ant, Grimsley will not lose face and be disgraced by losing the award. Grimsley will again appear: to be number one in everything, especially school beautiful, and no: one will ever know! Before you sentimental seniors become angry with the council please remember that it is the stu dents fault for the Prom dispersing. If the students had tried to arouse interest and excitement about the Prom and had bought tickets, then this dreadful announcement would' not have been necessary. This project was accepted as a good idea since Grimsley really needs to be cleaned befobe the School Beautiful judging. Because only about 10 students were at tending the Saturday workdays, it was decided that a compulsory workday for everyone would be beneficial. Graduating Class Barely Makes III It seems a shame that Grimsley students don’t even care enough about their school to want to par ticipate in a social event. What is this school coming to? Mrs. Pringle, Miss Lynne Hund ley, advisors of the school beau tiful committee agreed that this workday would be more important than the one day of classes. It would also give the students a change of scenery, and would per- The graduating class of 1968 just made it! Yes, the “good old” years are over; Approximately two: weeks ago aU seniors were surveyed in homeroom to give their opinion on whether or not the school year should be continued. These survey results were sent to Raleigh where they were processed, and then the big decision was made! Cigarettes To Be Sold In Grimsley School Store Yes, students, the inevitable has finally happened! Beginning Au gust, 1969, the school week will consist of six days. In addition to Saturday being a part of school life, students will occupy the buildings for ten months of the year. Yes, August through May will consti tute the school calendar. Beginning tomorrow the Grimsley school store will begin selling cig arettes to students. The store will shelve 50 brand name cigaretttes including cigarettes with charcoal filters, king size and lOO’s — the smoking stick that is extra long! Both individual packs and cartons win be put on the market. store may grfeatly prosper and have more money on which to operate. Because of this new product, the school store will open before school, during break, both fourth and fifth, period lunches, and after school, for the convenience of the students. The store decided to sell this product because of its great popu larity among students. Profits can easily be made, and the school Uniforms Required For All Next Year Students are urged to patronizfe the Grimsley school store. Please buy your cigarettes at school in stead of at your local grocery store. The business will be appreciated^ and the money is going for a good cause—^your school. If many custo mers are not found at the store, then of course thte store will quit selling cigarettes and resume its usual business. So students, come one, come all, just come! Sophomore, don’t cry; Juniors, don’t scream! Just be thankful that you are not in the first grade and have to climb the ladder from elementary school to high school again. There are some advantages in this change. More subjects will be offered so students may have a wider choice from which to choose. Upperclassmen, don’t worry about the situation now. Just enjoy the remainder of this year and have a happy summer. Next year won’t be so bad. Everyone else will be in the same predicament of en during the long, long year. Cheer up. Graduation is only one or two years away, if you are lucky! A questionnaire will be circulated among sophomores and juniors during homeroom Friday, April 5, The reason for this questionnaire is for students to express their opin ions concerning the styles of school uniforms which will become a tra ditional part of all public schools next year. Of course the uniforms will be navy blue and white, the "Whirlie colors, but school officials felt that students would be better satisfied and less likely to demonstrate if they could help decide the cut and style of their dress. Students, you are urged to think seriously about the style of your uniform. Remember that these clothes must be worn 180 days out af the year, not merely three or four times. Also, the styles should look becoming on any person, tall, short, fat, or thin. Remember that these uniforms will not be Paris originals; they should be practical. Look before you leap, girls especial ly! Announcements Not Heard, Students Talk Too Much Every morning Mr. Routh or Mr. Glenn takes about three minutes of our homeroom time to give an nouncements concerning the sched ule of the day. This is of importance to every student, and should not be ignored. the Recently, there has been too much talking during morning announcfements in the homeroom, is this fair to Mr. Routh or Mr. Glenn? Every morning when they start to give announcements, they' can hear a loud hum of all the stu dents talking. Mr. Glenn has com mented that most of the noise seems to come from the science building. Students, this ^ most de grading and most embarassing" when Mr. Routh or Mr. Glenn has a guest over to show thoim school, and how it operates. If this talking doesn’t cease, another time will have to be used for announcements. One sugges tion has already been seriously considered. That is, that wte use our ten minutes for break just for announcements, and information concerning the schedule of the day instead of getting something to eat. Please, stud^ints, listen to an nouncements so w'e may keep our break! GOOD NEWS IS GONE!
