GVC In Existence Six Years Thursday
Next Thursday, the Greensboro
Youth Council will be six years
old. It’s probably the most preco
cious six-year-old organization in
teenage history!
GYC began in 1962 after a wild
party which proved that Greens
boro teens had to have a produc
tive, unifying organization. GY
resulted, complete with a paid
Executive Director, (who also
is fantastic!) Mrts. Joanne Dwig-
gins.
In six years, GYC has succeed
ed in unbelievable numbers of
efforts to give teen-agers a “worth
while part to take in constructive
projects and programs.”
As usual, GHS has its share of
leaders in this year’s Council—
including four committee chairmen
—Karen Spivey (Arts), Bonnie
Boyles (Publications), Becky
Price (Employment), and Lance
Africk (Service). Ross Lynch is
our local District Director at
Grimsley, and William Herbert
from Page is the GYC Chairman
this year.
For each of the 20 Grimsley
Councilmen (thee are 81 high
school students on the entire coun
cil), there are 99 other students
who cannot be official council-
men. The Council can and does
initiate hundreds of workable
projects, but only YOU can pro
vide enough man power and sup
port to make the efforts worth
while—and FUN!
During this special “birthday
week”, your GYC representative
will be wearing bright yellow
buttons that read, “Ask me about
GYC!” Ask them—they all are
big talkers—and see how YOU
can get in the act. Ask about
Powderpuff Football (for GIRLS),
about Friends of the Court (for
teen-age jurors!), about the new
teen news magazine (staff help
wanted!), about the upcoming
Football Express, the GYC flower
cart, the new GYC teen-age TV
show, and loads more. If you can’t
find ANY one of the Councilmen,
then call 378-1771, the GYC of
fice number!
Look at the GYC bulletin board,
located on the 1st floor of the
main building. Read the latest
news, and take a free Teen Brief
from the box. Check the GHS
traffic safety board to see how
many violations we’ve had to date.
Then, pick up a GYC information
card and a GYC bookmark at the
new GYC information booth!
Remember, our sixth birthday
is THIS Thursday! Stop by and
celebrate after school on Thurs
day at the Girl’s Gym for refresh
ments. See you there!
