May 14th, at the final meet- ag of the year of the Eastern luslc Festival Auxiliary. Rebecca fas the recipient of the auxiliary’ cholarship to the festival. Rebecca played the following umbers for the group: Bethoven’s Sonata in F Minor”; Chopin’s Nocturne in E,” “Humoreske,” VS,,--'. Debussy’ “Delphic Dancers”; and MacDowelTs “Polonaise in E Min or”. Rebecca studies piano with Geiroge A. Kiropes and also studies clarinet with Jame R. Dicker. She is also a. member of the Euterpe Symphonia, the or chestra and the Symphony Band. She is president of the FTA and a member of the district federa tion of music clubs. Serving as Editor-in-Chief will be Steve Grossman. Managing Editor will be Don Vaughan. On the Editorial staff will be Vickie Topkin, Meredith Foltz and Steve Settle. The News Editor will be David Gaynor. Serving under him as news reporters will be Cindy Mes- sick, Rodney Holland, Martha Sparrow, and Susan Hardee. The Sports Staff will include Walt Deal, Alan Riley, and Larry Sta ples. Feature Editor will be Susan Michaels. Serving on the Feature Staff will be Sharon Mock, Beth Johnson, Tom Dawson, and Betty Black. The Photographer will be Lowell Rauch. Cartoonists will be Chuck Steacy and A1 Wheeler. The Exchange Editor will be Carol Groover. These positions are tentative right now and will be subject to change next year. If the change ig needed, people will be moved around to find the best position for their talents. Those wishing to serve on HIGH LIFE should contact Miss Lovett in room 410. H Cindy Johnson (1st place Latin State Academic Contest), Peter Michalove (2nd place French), Lane Willson (Naval Reserve Of ficers Training Corps Candidate —Auburn University), and all the seniors received tickets to the Carolina Theatre. Receiving special awards for work in VICA club were: Elaine McIntosh (Business Education), James Micheal Reed (Woodwork ing), Jerry Durham (Machine Shop), Bob Meachem (Electron ics) and Chrig Coltrane (Draft ing). Music award recipients in cluded Rie Davig (H. Grady Mil ler Cup for Band), Lynn Moore (Brietz-Hazelman Cup for Glee Club), and Elaine Frye (Orches tra Cup). O’Henry Short Story Awards went to Pete Beck (1st), Julia Whitley (2nd) and Laura Truit and Lynn Southworth (tied for third). Jimmy Palmer and Don Debragga were mentioned as delegateg to Boy’s State as was Cyd Payne who will attend Girl’s State. Continaed on Page Six ROTC Salutes Mr. Routh On Friday, May 16th, the Grimsley ROTC held a special assembly to honor our retiring principal, Mr. A. P. Routh. The assembly was held in the stadium. The ROTC was assisted in their drills by the Grimsley Marching Band who appeared in their unifprms. Special formations were formed to honor Mr. Routh the same way the regular armed services hold their reviews when they have special guests or on a special occasion. Both Colonel Jessee Booker and Mr. Routh gave short addresscg pertaining to the assembly. Then the troops passed by the reviewing tand where Colonel Booker and Mr., Routh stood at attention to re view the troops passing by. At this time, the Marching Band played a march as the cadets marched by at attention. They also played the Marine Hymn. . A .small force cf policemen wag on hand to prevent the outbreak of rumored protests at the as sembly. The assembly, however,, went without incident. G.y.C. Officers Elected i These are the Varsity Cheerleaders for 1919-70 school year. They were chosen some- hue last week. May 15, the Greensboro Youth Council held its spring election. At the First Presbyterian Church, the youth council made their selec tions for chairman, vice chairman, secretary, clerk, and Youth Coun cil of North Carolina delegates. Elected chairman wag Dewitt McCarley of Grimsley., On GYC Dewitt worked for a total of 691' hours. He served on the law com mittee and was very instrumental in the marijuana project. Dewitt was also on the Teen-Age Cam- G.H.S. Alumni Present Books To The Library On Saturday, May 10, the class of 1944 held a special reunion with a banquet and dance on campus. At this reunion they pre sented the library with seven books in honor of retiring Grims ley principal A. P. Routh. Presi dent of the class of 1944 was Mrs. W. Ervin Small and serving as chairman of the reunion was Mrs. Horace Kornegay. The books presented were: The Complete Poems of Randall Jarrell, The Horizon B^ok of Great Cathedral.s, The Horizon Book of the Middle AgCs, The American Hertige Book of Natural Wonders, The Ameri can Heritage History of the Thir teen Colonies, The Dictionary of Quotations by Bergen Evans, and the Random House Dictionary. Last summer, the class of 1948 also held a reunion and presented to the GHS library the compelte ten volume series of Gateway to the Great Books, a series which includes 225 selections from the works of 135 great authors. These books were given in honor of: Andy Bell, Horace Muse, David Bueckner, Paul Patton, Nancy Thomas, Dola Collins, and John Laubenheimer. Two from Grimsley were voted to It by GYC, they 'are Jack Hunneman 'and Bill Glass. Jack and Bill who are rising seniors will represent our youth council on the state level along with Susy Levy who is vice-chairman of Y.C.N.C. Monday night. May 19, the nine nominations for Chairman of Com- mitteeg were held and Thursday night. May 22, elections were held. New GYC members will make the choice on which committee they wish to work. When this is completed, work will begin its new year for GYC. 0 G.Y.C. Holds Awards Banquet At the Holiday Inn South, May 15th, the Greensboro Youth Coun cil held its award banquet.
