May l'9, 1970- HIGH LIFE Page Three Tennis Members Fare Well BY ALAN RILEY The girls and boys of Grimsley have fared well in tennis compe tition held recently in the local Triad area. The boys and girls teams both have taken some top honors home to Grimsley. These netters have really come through for the mighty Whirlies this year. The coach of the boys tennis team is Mac Thacker. He has done a fine job with these hard working boys this year. The Whir- lie boys won the regular season championship in the Central 4-A. They finished with a 10-2 record in dual matches. The Whirlie boys finished second in the con ference tournament, losing to Page only. Chip Stam went all the way to the finals before be ing beaten out by Bill Brown of Page. The Grimsley doubles team of Andy Sykes and Stewart Gordon seemed to have a rather easy time in winning the doubles championship. The Whirlies boys fared well also in Winston-Salem action. In the Central Section Tennis Tour nament, Grimsley won the title with 13 team points. Chapel Hill High School won second place here. Here Chip Stam made it into the finals before being knocked out by number one seeded John Lucas of Durham. The quarterfinalists on quaiified for the state tournament in Chap el Hill. Grimsley tennis has been made rougher this year by the lack of proper facilities. The dirt courts are not really too good even for practicing on. Like the other schools, other facilities have been used. Matches have been played on the Latham Park courts. Of the team this year, only one boy is graduating. He is Don Vaughn. So the future of boys tennis at Grimsley looks bright. Coach Thacker has done a great job with the boys this year. They have done a great job for him. The girls of Grimsley have also fared well in tennis action lately. The coach of the girls team is Miss Tamblyn. In an earlier issue the girls on the team and the Page Wins Sectional, GHS Places Fifth GOLFERS PLACE SECOND IN REGIONAL BY ALAN RILEY The sectional golf tournament, a qualifying for the state tourna ment, was held at Blair Park golf course in High Point after earlier being rained out. Some 136 golf ers from area high schools com peted in the sectionals. There were several other sectionals around the state. These winners qualified for the state event in /Y\ fl McDonald s Chapel Hill. Each school was al lowed as many as five entrants in the event. The four lowest scores on each team were used as team scores. The Whirlie golfers of Grimsley placed second in the sectionals. Parkland of Winston-Salem led the event which saw nine teams survive the cut. The Grimsley team score was 304. Parkland shot a 302 total. Gordon Johnson led the Grimsley attack with a fine one over par 73. Dave Coch rane shot 75, Freddie Robinson 77, Reid Stone 79, and Woody Edwards 82. The Whirlie golfers finished strong and are to be commended on their fine perform ances. Page High came in for a first place finish in the Greensboro sectional track meet held at Grimsley, Tuesday, May 5. Only seven points separated the first six teams. High Point Central followed Page’s 27 points wtih 26 as the meet went down to the final event. Dudley with 25, Smith with 23, • Grimsley’s 23, and Win ston-Salem Atkins’ with 20 fol lowed Page and HPC. The meet was divided into two classes. Such teams as Grimsley, Page and Smith competed in Class II. Smaller schools like Western Guilford were placed in Class I. Grimsley came home fifth after finishing fourth last week in the regional meet. Grimsley jumped off to an early lead behind the strong performances of Randy Poole who again came through big for the Whirlies. Poole came in first in the high hurdles com-, petition and second in the low MATEER'S CURB MARKET 1727 W. LEE STREET HOURS: 7:30 A. M. — 11:45 P. Several Whirlies came through with good performances, but the Whirlies were not strong enough over all to finish higher than fifth. matches played were mentioned. Since then, the girls have fared well in tennis action. In Chapel Hill, the state tournament was held. Grimsley tied for top hon ors with Claremont High School of Hickory. Jean Barnes of Grims ley finished second to Barbara Keller of Claremont in the sin gles. Carol Wilson also partici pated for Grimsley in the tourna ment. Sixty six girls in all com peted. Congratulations are in order for all the boys and girls who play tennis for Grimsley. The mighty Whirlies have mastered another sport. Whirlies Defeat High Point The varsity baseball team, bid ding for the conference champion ship and a berth in the state playoffs, edged High Point Cen tral 2-1 on the GHS home field. The win left the Whirlies dead locked with Burlington Williams for the conference lead, with Greensboro Smith challenging—a game behind. A complete report on the final results of / this pen nant race will be reported upon in the final issue of HIGH LIFE Rick Halstead’s first inning dou ble plated the only two runs Matt Lojko was to need in pitching the win. Halstead led off a later inning with a line drive triple, but his fellow Whirlies were un able to score him. Two sixth inning doubles kept Lojko from record ing a shutout, but he pitched well in allowing only four hits in a complete seven inning game. The Whirlies, coming off an ex tended period of inactivity due to several game postponements, need ed the High Point victory to get back on the winning track. As of May 10, GHS stood 6-2 in the conference, as did the Bulldogs from Williams. Overall, Grimsley has recorded 10 wins against only 3 losses. If the Whirlies defeated Burlington and Greens boro Dudley in their fnial two contests, the Whirlies would have clinched first place in Grou^ I of the Central 4-A conference. Any loss would have most likely doomed GHS to no better than a second place conference finish.
