Communication System Breaks Down Barriers Elliot University Center from noon until 4:00 p.m. This conference promises to be an unusual one with dele gates having a different assign ment than the usual speaking and voting. The delegates will be di vided into teams of six. Each team must decide on an issue that it feels is important to the 8,000 senior high students of Greens boro; then they must make a survey question that is related to the issue that can be placed with all the other questions of the other teams. This will form a ballot on which all senior high students may vote on September 28. The team will then make a display about its issue so the voters may review it before they mark their ballots to cast their votes. The results of each team’s work with each issue voted on will be decided by the Greens boro high school student. Each youth in this age bracket is in vited to vote. He will be register ed at his school’s table in Elliot Center and receive the ballot. This will list about 25 questions that the teams have composed. Then the student may tour to review the display area, mark his ballot, and cast his vote. On any of the questions the person will be able to agree or disagree with the team’s statements. The results of the voting will be tabulated for city use, so the more people that vote, the more acurate the result will be for future reference. On September 23 posters will be placed in the high schools showing the ballot for voting on the 28. To encourage more youth to come, a Mayor’s Youth Confer- ense Trophy will be presented to the senior high school with the highest percentage of its student body registering and voting. The trophy will be awarded to the school at the Awards Banquet, also to be held on September 28. Grimsley’s Communication Sys tem is a newly formed program just being put into operation this fall. Its purpose is primar ily to break down the barriers of communication along all lev els. By doing this, the program also helps to aid in decision making by giving the students and teachers a chance to work together. The Communication System is a total school project. It hopes to break down groups into small er groups. This arrangement has already been accomplished on the faculty’s part during this summer. They are now divided into ten groups with two leaders for each group. These two leaders of all the groups from the “teachers’ hub” and work as a sort of cap tain for the groups. Some 180 students are already involved in Grimsley’s Communi cation System. These students came as volunteers this summer for a week of Leadership Work- Many Renovallons To Be Made Across Grimsiey's Campus The noise Grimsiey students are hearing will soon result in many improvements across the campus. The school store has moved across the hall to Room 102 to provide more room for the Guid ance Center which is going to be reconstructed. The new Guid ance Center will have a different floor plan, air-conditioning, car pet, and a conference room to be used for special services. The counselors will be moving their belongings on the stage during the renovations. On July 8 construction started on the eight composition tennis courts which will be ready for use in a couple of weeks. During the day these courts will be used by gym classes from Grimsiey and any other schools that wish to use them. The courts will be for public use at night unless otherwise posted. The new science bulding is finally underway to be completed in eleven months. It will be one- story, complete with air-condi tioning, carpet, a greenhouse, and all of the latest equipment. It will be located parallel and be hind the present science build ing. New stadium lights, a paved bus parking lot, a new floor in the cafeteria kitchen, and new marching band uniforms add to the changes being made at GHS this year. New teachers include defl.' to right) Mr. William McKinney, Mrs. Penny Stanton, AAjr. James Wade, Mrs. Jane Rhodes, and Mr. Dan Garner. Subscribe To HIGH LIFE shop, which taught them just what the program is and how it works. Now. two of these students will join with one faculty member and form a “leadership team.’' This “leadership team” will then head the community, which will be a cross-section of students. Hopefully, between fifteen and eighteen students will be in each community. During the summer also a poll was taken among the volunteer students to see what were the most needed topics for communi ties to discuss. These communi ties will then meet and de bate. trying to decide what di rection they should take in cor recting the problem. Exactly how Grimsley’s Com munication System will be carried out is still not entirely decided. The program is set up to have one-hour meetings (maybe longer as it developes) of the whole school. A definite agenda will be set up and each community will be heard from and their views on the given topic. The whole idea of this program came about from a course some of the Grimsiey teachers took last year. The course taught them how to communicate more ef fectively, and they worked on implementing its ideas at Grims iey. This Communication System is sometimes referred to as Glass- er since the course the teachers took was a Glasser Seminar; how ever, the Grimsiey Communica tion System is unique only to Grimsiey and is how trying to improve communications among all in our high school. 0 — NEWS BRIEFS The GYC will begin selling ‘The Entertainer” (a coupon book for restaurants) in September.
