Chris Evergreen
Chris Evergreen is a project
of the Greensboro Youth
Council to promote the sale of
living Chrisfmas trees for this
holiday season.
Project chairman, Dillon
Robinson of Page said, “Live
Christmas trees have many
advantages. They are not as
susceptible to fire as are trees
whose roots have been cut,
and also the needles don't
fall." Most importantly they
can be replanted and live
extremely long lives.
To promote the Chris
Evergreen project, Dillon has
planned another Chris Ever
green Art Contest under the
direction of .Sharon Clark. All
children under the age of
twelve can draw Chris and
send their entry to the “Old
Rebel Show" c/o WFMY-TV
between November 20 and
December 16. The first prize
will be a live Christmas tree,
compliments of GYC. Also

Students
Fed up with school?
Something really bothering
you about a class, or teacher,
or policy? Maybe the
Greensboro School Board
could help.
The problem is, of course,
getting to the school board.
You could go to one of their
public meetings, bnt they
have a fixed agenda. You can’t
always just but in. Besides the
board can’t really listen to
you objectively in public, with
news reporters all around.
They’ve never heard of you or
your problem before and can’t
really size up your problem or
suggest an answer on the
spot.
You could go to individual
board members in private, but
they’re busy people. Besides,
they’re only ordinary citizens;
they may not know the
background of your grievance.
You would be referred to
somebody in the central
administration downtown. But
you need the school board to
work with your problem.
Sound hopeless? It almost
is. There aren’t enough board
members to listen to every
student with a gripe. Even if
there were, the board
members are’t full-time school
officials. They can’t be as
informed about the schools as
they would like to. They do
rely on school officials for
information and advice, but
school officials aren’t stu
dents. They have their own
point of view.
What you need is a student
who can get to the school
board for you. The student will
know the background of youk
problem and can understand
your point of view. Now where
do you find a student who has
a direct line to the school
board?
As a matter of fact, there
are four such students in each
of the city high schools. They
are the members of the
Student-.School Board Action
Group. This conimittee was
set up by the school board in
an effort to get them in closer
touch with the students.
There are four permanent
representatives from each
school. They are the head of
.Student Government, head of
Student Affairs, Inter-Club
Council President, and news
paper editor. Any two other

Undertaken By Cluhs
Grimsley’s service clubs
have planned many diverse
projects for the 1974-’75
school year.
The Grimsley Bike Club’s
charter was ratified by the
Executive Council on Novem
ber 20. It is the first
bike-oriented school club in
the South. Mr. Garner is the
faculty advisor; the president
is Richard Morton; the
vice-presdent, Gordon Hart-
grove; and Rob Church, the
secretary-treasurer. Anyone
interested in bicycling should
contact Richard Morton.

Browder. Following that. Cliff
Flynn, accompanied by Cindy
Bray, sang a solo of “Green
Pastures.’’ Bernie Hall then
recognized the special guests,
who were Miss Amy Moore,
ex-advisor; Mr. Glenn, princi
pal; and Mr. Ballance,
assistant principal.
The five qualifications for
membership into National
Honor Society were then
examined as Beverly Sizemore
lit the candle for Knowledge;
Amy Fickling lit the candle for
Scholarship; Bill Silkworth,
the candle for Service; Carol
Pearce, the one for leadership;
and Kevin Spangler, the last
candle for Character.
Torchlight, Grimsley’s
chapter of the National Honor
Society, is one of the oldest in
North Carolina. It was issued
to Greensboro Senior High
School in 1922 and has the
distinction of being number
73. There are currently 20,300
branches of the Society in the
United States so the low
charter number has acquired
great meaning.
Special thanks go to Mrs.
Gayle Manahan and Mrs. Ann
Oakley co-advisors of Torch
light, and the Grimsley Girls’
Madrigals, under the direction
of Mr. Ron Hill, who provided
background music during the
induction of new members.
several appearances of Chris
are planned on the “Old Rebel
Show” and a public service
announcement has been made
along with several radio spots.
Cindy Bolton heads up the
Chip-In Committee, a new
aspect of the project. This is
for the people who buy dead
trees and would like to have
chips made from them.
GYC asks everyone to
support ecology this year and
buy a live Christmas tree.

Thanksgiving dinners will
be given to the custodians
today as the annual Thanks
giving project comes to an
end.
The project headed this year
by Joseph Evans, David
Kennett and Richard Biller,
.Student Affairs Co-Chairmen
began on November 11.
Collections this year were
taken up by homeroom
presidents for the first time.
Executive Council members
also collected money during
all hours of school.
In past years the Thanks
giving project has been under
the direction of the Council,
but this year the duty was
given to Student Affairs.
Every project has always
been a large success but with
the rising costs of sugar, flour,
and other foodstuffs much
more money was needed to
provide for the custodians.
Also, last Saturday, council
members attended the district
council meeting held in High
Point. The meeting gave each
school a chance to relate their
ideas with the ideas of other
schools. It also informed the
area council members with
ideas for the fund-raising as
well as other worthwhile
projects.
