(Yii Refraining Constitution This is the first of several editorials suggesting changes that might be made in the constitution to make student government more effective at Grimsley. Pursuant to Article III, Section 5 of the Student Cooperative Association Constitution .This and all other editorials in this series are hereby submitted to the co-chairpersons of Student Affairs for consideration by the Executive Council in amending the present constitution or in drafting a new one. The first three words of the constitution of the Student Cooperative Association are “We, the students...” What “we the students” say in the preamble is that we ordain and establish the constitution. In other words, we approve of it. Approval of anything, at least in this country, implies a knowledge of what one is approving of. Otherwise the consent is obtained fraudulently. Perhaps the major problem the student government faces is the lack of communication it has with the student body it is supposed to represent. This failure in communication begins with elections. The students directly choose only caucus members-not the offices they will hold. It is like nominating someone for an office and then'not being able to vote for him. .Supposedly, an individual should be able to fill any position in his caucus, but the skills demanded by each position are quite different. Different people have different interests. It is unrealistic to expect a person competently and willingly to be able to fill any one of five very different positions. This year a serious breakdown has already occurred in the electoral system. In order to choose a Chairman, the Executive Council had to go through seven ballots between the same two people. In the end the loser was the one who got the most votes at the polls. This is hardly representative government, when one or two tie breakers choose for the whole school. Direct elections to specific positions make much more sense. It more nearly expresses the will of the students and more closely involves them in student government. Letter to the Editor Watergate Comes to Grimsley ' * . ao Letter to Ep HAJ) Tb UAVfc /, WK6 yw Letter to the Editor New Exam System Really Helps Editor: This new exam schedule is really great! It helps the people who would ordinarily have to take every exam. It even helps those who have made straight “A’s” and have never taken an exam before by- giving them experience in taking them. Imagine going straight to college with no experience what-soever in taking an exam! That person would probably be scared to death of his or her first exam. Another reason 1 really like this schedule is because even the “smart” people have to take exams. 1 used to envy all those straight “A” students who would always get out of taking exams. It made me feel really dumb. Now with everyone there taking exams. I’ll probably feel more comfortable. I would like to thank whoever made up this schedule on my behalf and for all the rest of us “dumb" people! Pattie Teixeira the Editor Can Commiinication System Work ? To the Editor: Well, fellow Grimsleyites. since the last GCS meeting, many complaints, jokes and snide comments can be heard. The question is are they called for? The main com plaint is that these meetings are a waste of time, but after three of them-two introduc tory and one to break the ice - how can we say? How many of us really contributed anything of value? Another comntent is that “it won’t do any good; the adults won’t listen.” But that, too, is invalid since the adults haven’t been given a chance. For all you complainers out there the biggest question of all is “are you willing to get involved and do something? If not, the system really won’t work and you can keep complaining until you gra duate and nothing will improve. Please, give it a chance. Don’t kill it before we can show that we do care and can change things. Katie Pruitt Letter to the Editor Editor, In these days of Watergate and other similar corruptive incidents, it is not surprising that G.H..S. has had a small taste of this polluted water that is flooding our govern ment. I am referring to the fund raising project that was conducted by School Beaulil'ul last spring to raise money for a parking lot sweeper. A large sum of money vvas eollcelcd from homerooms by organiz ing a nieklc day for sophomores, a dime day for juniors, a quarter day for seniors, and a dollar day for (eaehers. Announcements were made each day to remind students not to forget their monev. As a result, Grimsley students (and teachers, if any contributed) gave their money to the collectors, unaware that the sweeper would cost much more than the committee could ever hope to raise. After the collection ended, it was not announced how much had been collected nor how niiieh more was lacking. The sweeper was no longer mentioned and neither was the money. So far this year it has not been mentioned either. What happened to the money? 1 think it is time we ail found out. It may all be silting in a bank somewhere very safe. I challenge the people that were in charge to inform the students of Grimsley how much money was collected and how it w as spent. If it w as not spent, it should be made clear w hat it w ill be used for. Recently, in our communi cations groups. w e w ere asked to give opinions on w hat to do about all the trash and broken glass in the student parking lot. I am sure that the funds in question (if there arc any) could be used to help this problem. After all, the money w as collected for this purpose in the first place. Gregg Dickson HIGH LIFE Cures Study Hall Editor : 1 would just like for you to know how much I enjoy reading HIGH LIFE. It takes up time in the dull study halls and provides real entertain ment. At the same time, I think you put the paper together in sueh a way that it catches and keeps the readers’ interest. I particularly enjoy the “Benchw armer” and “Norkum” articles. I think that HIGH LIFE is one of the best newspapers published in Greensboro, and I think it is a real asset to the student body at Grimsley. Keep up the good work!
